Re: RIP, Prince.
Algren is wrong when he says Prince was not an iconic/legendary figure in popular music, but he is not entirely wrong re: the output of the last 15 or so years. A lot of fair-weather fans had well tuned out by the time he put out albums with goofy titles such as LotusFlow3r, 20Ten, and HITnRUN: Phase One. People were going to the shows to hear cuts from 1999 and Purple Rain.
To argue otherwise feels almost foolish. I am a diehard Stones fan, but I would never posit Keith Richards' Crosseyed Heart from 2015 is as major a commercial or cultural force as Let It Bleed or Exile on Main St.
However, I would not call Prince a has-been, either. The connotation is too harsh. His career just comfortably plateaued.

Nice David, I was writing something similar until I saw that. Elvis and even MJ are prime examples before they died. Bowie even, and James Brown or Sinatra. I don't know of any recent Prince stories where people still didn't lose their shit. His glory days were behind him, but he does certainly have icon status (That Super Bowl half time show for one was phenomenal). Today he was more run of the mill musician, with some really good stuff mixed in. That does not make him a guy with a cup waiting on a street corner. You don't lose legend status.

Re: RIP, Prince.
I think the problem with Prince is that he is not approachable and there were some douchebag stories from people that have encountered him. It also doesn't help his case that he was so paranoid about distributing his music online that he kept handing out cease & desist orders to anyone who uploads snippets of his music.
Its kind of bad since without social media, his music won't be heard for generations. That was a difference between Bowie who has used the net way back in the early 90s to distribute his songs
What did Dave Chappelle think about having his Prince impression transformed into a real Prince album cover?
The comedian memorably explained on Friday [June 14, 2014] to Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon what it's like being featured on the cover of Prince's September 2013 single Breakfast Can Wait.
"That's a Prince judo move right there. … You make fun of Prince in a sketch and he'll just use you in his album cover," the comedian quipped. "What am I going to do — sue him for using a picture of me dressed up like him? ... That's checkmate right there."

Love that Chapelle anecdote!
Personally and among most people I know Prince had more of a impact than Bowie. Sure most of his music that people remember is from last century but that's the same for most of these famous musicians who have passed away recently.
Jimmy fallon shared a wonderful story about a ping pong match with Prince that began when he was booking Prince for the show. YouTube it tomorrow
