He might not have been as present in popculture as he was during that time, but his albums were still successful. Most of them hit the top 5 of the Billboard 2000 and a couple of them were certified, which a lot of artists can't manage anymore these days. And regardless of his more recent activity, the man's a legend and a lot of people are simply connecting to the memories they have of their favourite Prince songs/albums.

Nah. He's not a legend. People only know "Purple Rain". To most people he was a joke.

But really, wasn't he pretty much quiet for years? I didn't ever hear about him doing anything. I don't know, his death seems like nothing compared to MJ, Bowie, or even Whitney Houston. Prince had 22 top 40 hits in the 80s alone just behind Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Whitney Houston in the most top 40 hits for that decade. Not to mention he has sold over 100 million records. Purple Rain itself has sold 22 million copies. As for being more quiet over the years, every musician is like that. Its rare to find musicians who have multiple hits for more than two decades

Harkins is showing it in my neighborhood. Never watched it so I'm gonna check it out. Only 5$, I got their shirt for my popcorn and drink cup.

Of course iTunes will show him to be popular. He just died. Everybody is currently remembering (after 20 years) that they're a die hard fan.

 Re: RIP, Prince.
His last album in 2015 opened at #70 in the US chart. He hadn't had an album go Platinum since 2004. Everyone knows that Gold and Silver mean fuck all. The last album of his that opened to #1 in the US was in 2006. He seems to have a more loyal following in Switzerland than in the US or UK. Basically, he was nowhere near as big as he was in the 80s and 90s....which was what I was trying to get across to you all (but you're all in the I'm-a-hardcore-Prince-fan stage at the moment). Let's give it a week and you'll be back to normal.

 Re: RIP, Prince.
His last two albums have been met with pretty good reviews for the most part. And charts just tell you current popularity. They don't speak about quality or importance. Unless you think Katy Perry music will be important 20 years down the road?
EDIT: Yes he hasn't been as popular as he once was, but you are saying he was nobody now. Which is not true.

 Re: RIP, Prince.
It kind of is true, though. He is only not a "nobody" now because of his successful past. Take his current success, and it's pretty lame. He was a has-been.

 Re: RIP, Prince.
Now that Chippy mentioned two very successful touring acts (who are by no mean has-beens) I checked Prince's last tours. He was still raking in $$$$$. I guess there are thousands of people who still think very highly of him.

 Re: RIP, Prince.
Sure. Everyone always has their fans. It's much easier to fill a stadium than get consistent nation/wordwide sales.

 Re: RIP, Prince.
You do get that charts aren't the same as they once were? The whole album sales numbers have been convoluted. They now add pure sales and streaming points from singles (?!??!!? where x number of streamed singles add up to album sales) just to push up sales so they don't seem as low as they actually are. And Prince was against online music everything (sales, streaming, etc.).
It's interesting you only checked apparently Hit n Run album when mentioning #70. That was a Tidal exclusive for the first week (which mostly means free downloads like Rihanna's ANTI or some other crazy promo crap they are pulling in desperate attempt to get people on board). Tidal is a shitfest and kills every charting very easily (and probably reinforced Prince's opinion on online music availability). Look at what happened to Kanye's latest album (it sold 28,000 physical copies in its first week and only 1,000 in its second) and it has only streaming to thank for its #1 debut (not online album sales which were nonexistent, but streaming!!!).
Year earlier his album Art Official Age was #5. Plectumelectrum before that was #8. The one before that (Lotusflow3r/MPLSound) charted at #2. I'm actually surprised to see them doing so good IMHO.
Algren you are just going the wrong way about this.

 Re: RIP, Prince.
But when you get to Lotusflow3r/MPLSound, you're then at 2009, which is 7 years ago, and no data for any other country besides the USA and The Netherlands. Must be so popular!

 Re: RIP, Prince.
I guess #5 and #8 from 2014 don't work for you either. I just wanted to show he stayed relatively consistent on the album charts (not counting weird releases as Tidal, free releases etc.). Some people who have hit songs can't even debut in top 10 and it's a barren chart when sales are considered.

They don't, right, because anything can get to #5 and #8, and it's not a coincidence that those two albums were helped by Warner Bros. Records' involvement. The next album (without WBR) debuted at #70, albeit I accept your Tidal argument.

You do know that probably 99% of albums are under some huge label (Warner, Interscope, Universal, Sony...)???
