I don't think Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare will top Alice in Wonderland in gross, but it's likely to beat it in admissions.

Only one update to go, but Detective Conan has beaten Star Wars on Sunday AND for the weekend. It trailed Star Wars by 3,590 admissions at the usual locations yesterday, but is up 6,849 admissions for today; giving it a 3,259 advantage before the last couple hours of today are taken into account.

It looks quite likely that it may have exceeded an astounding 900,000 admissions if we compare its performance against last year's film at the usual locations. Any figure close to, or just over, 900,000 will give it a weekend opening above ¥1.1 billion ($10 million+). For reference, only four other animated films have ever sold over 900,000 tickets on their opening weekend (two Yo-Kai Watch films, Howl's Moving Castle, and One Piece Film Z).

If these updated projections stick, it's going to be incredibly difficult for anything to beat for the remainder of 2016. Alice Through the Looking Glass and Finding Dory are unlikely to open this high, so that leaves just One Piece Film Gold as the only actual contender.

I'll have the final update, followed by the Weekend Estimates, up in a couple hours.

Usual Locations (Two-Thirds of Market) - Weekend Admissions

Saturday Results:
Tickets Sold/Available Tickets (% Capacity) - Film Title [Theaters/Showings]
317,709/530,456 (59.9% capacity) - Yo-Kai Watch 2 [231/1,727]
293,246/714,702 (41.0% capacity) - Star Wars VII [236/2,789]
289,656/530,905 (54.5% capacity) - Detective Conan 20 [230/1,502]

Sunday Results:
Tickets Sold/Available Tickets (% Capacity) - Film Title [Theaters/Showings]
303,414/524,359 (57.9% capacity) - Yo-Kai Watch 2 [231/1,688]
282,386/512,761 (55.1% capacity) - Detective Conan 20 [226/1,434]
275,491/670,208 (41.1% capacity) - Star Wars VII [236/2,636]

Weekend Results:
Tickets Sold/Available Tickets (% Capacity) - Film Title [Theaters/Showings]
621,123/1,051,181 (59.1% capacity) - Yo-Kai Watch 2 [231/3,415]
572,042/1,043,666 (54.8% capacity) - Detective Conan 20 [230/2,936]
569,497/1,392,147 (40.9% capacity) - Star Wars VII [236/5,431]

I don't really have time to put together weekend estimates, but these numbers are massive for Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare. It likely sold around 900,000 admissions, if not more, over the weekend, which will best The Force Awakens (800,258). I don't believe it'll quite match Yo-Kai Watch 2's (974,557) admissions, but it could very well have topped in in terms of gross due to its higher avg. ticket price. And a third uber-blockbuster opening of ¥1 billion+ in the span of 4 months is pretty crazy when some years go without a single one.

Detective Conan 20 also had to deal with the earthquake scare and its aftershocks over the weekend, which effectively shut down ~8% of the nation's theaters, too, yet still managed this massive opening.

I'll provide a more thorough weekend analysis after I return home this evening.

The Detective Conan films are generally frontloaded and very consistent with their multipliers (5-5.5), so I doubt the new film will stray from that range. If the opening ends up being ~¥1.1 billion, then a final gross of ¥5.5-6 billion ($50-55 million) is likely.

I'll have the weekend estimates up soon.

>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare sets a new franchise record; a new April opening weekend in terms of admissions; becomes the 33rd film to open above ¥1 billion (pending actual); and delivered what, perhaps, could be the biggest weekend that 2016 will see if it opens on the higher-end of estimates or improves upon them.

It's hard to pin point an estimate for openings this large, but based on my estimates/comparisons, I'm projecting it opens between ¥1.05-¥1.15 billion ($9.8-10.6 million) with 850,000-925,000 admissions. But for now, I'll go with a debut on the lower-end of that range since I overestimated Yo-Kai Watch and Star Wars last December.

The Detective Conan series is an annual franchise that used to settle for consistently strong openings around ¥500 million, but it has been on the rise in recent years and began approaching blockbuster level openings by breaking its own franchise record every year since 2012. And it's done just that this year, and what better way to celebrate its 20th anniversary than with an opening this big from its 20th release, which is likely to lead to the series' first blockbuster film by grossing over ¥5 billion.

>Crayon Shin-chan: Fast Asleep! Great Assault on the Dreaming World has been overlooked in the wake of Conan's monster opening weekend but it, too, performed very, very well this weekend. Its admissions at the usual locations are slightly higher than last year's franchise record holder, so it may have once again achieved a new franchise record this year with a debut near ¥400 million.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan Uncovers HUGE Opening
Reports are saying Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare exceeded ¥1.2 billion ($11 million+) over the weekend. That'd put its admissions, most likely, above 950,000...

I'm glad I went "conservative" with my estimates, because that figure is simply... staggering.

Also, this isn't good news for Zootopia or the other upcoming Golden Week openers (Capatin America, Terra Formars, etc.) over the next couple weeks. Not in terms of competition, that's mostly a non-factor, but because theaters are very unlikely to remove Conan from the largest screens for awhile unless it collapses.

>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare, the 20th film and 20th anniversary release in the popular Detective Conan series, set the box office on fire this weekend; delivering one of the most impressive opening weekends in quite some time, and what could be the biggest opening weekend of 2016 (calendar year) not just so far, but overall. It sold an astounding 933,781 admissions over the weekend across 348 screens. Here's a list of its accomplishments this weekend:

>Fourth Biggest Opening for an Animated Film (Gross and Admissions).
>Biggest Opening Weekend for the Month of April (Admissions).
>Second Biggest Opening for the Month of April (Gross).
>33rd Film to Debut Above ¥1 billion.
>31st Film to Debut Above 800,000 Admissions; 25th to Debut Above 900,000.
>New Franchise Opening Weekend Record; Claiming it by 38%.

It achieved all of the above without playing in 3% of its actual theater count due to Saturday's earthquake, which shut down most of southern Japan over the weekend.

The Detective Conan franchise has had over a dozen hit films in the past, and while each film over the past few years have set consecutive franchise records, none have been able to reach blockbuster status. Until now. It's quite clear that this year's release will definitely reach the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone, and might even exceed ¥6 billion ($55 million+).

>Crayon Shin-chan: Fast Asleep! Great Assault on the Dreaming World comes in at a distant second place, but it's far from a disappointing opening since it, too, set a new franchise record! The 24th film in the Crayon Shin-chan franchise sold an impressive 337,108 over the weekend on 334 screens; achieving a new franchise record by beating last year's film by 2%.

This long running annual franchise goes mostly overlooked compared to the other annual franchises like Pokemon, Doraemon, and its opening weekend comrade Detective Conan, but it has begun to breakaway from its typical openings/totals and is becoming a box office success itself in recent years. This year's release is likely to gross over ¥2 billion (~$20 million) again, and could break its own record by beating last year's film's ¥2.28 billion.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan held on surprisingly well this weekend, since Doraemon films tend to collapse when Detective Conan/Crayon Shin-chan open this time of year. It was already more than likely to become the highest-grossing film in the Doraemon franchise, but this weekend has assured that it's going to happen very soon. It's also going to become the first film in the franchise to gross over ¥4 billion. Incredible.

>Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has stabilized a bit, and in comparison to most other superhero films, has actually started to display some decent legs. It out-grossed The Dark Knight over the weekend, and is still on a good path to probably out-gross The Dark Knight Rises to become DC's highest-grossing, modern, superhero film.

>Spotlight is finally playing in Japan and what would have been a likely no show in the Top 10 had it not won Best Picture, turned into a decent opening weekend. It's a limited release, playing on 88 screens and was picked up by a small independent distributor, but it managed to sell 50,932 admissions over the weekend. Not bad, although it'll be one of the lowest-grossing Best Picture winners in well over a decade.
