so... how much would a Game of Thrones film open with?
The show is HUGE but realistically how much would a movie open to? I honestly I have no idea.

Off the strength of the fan base, maybe 60-65 million. But if they attracted the casual audience as well, maybe 70-80.

If the movie is released within a year of the series finale....100m + OW easily

It could potentially break the R rated opening record if the movie is based on the final book and finale. At least all those people who downloaded the tv show will be more disuaded to do so with the movie since the bootleg quality of a movie is nowhere as good and it looks better on IMAX anyhow. Either that or the Walking Dead would do that

I'd prefer a film version of pre-GOT stuff like The Dance of Dragons or Roberts Rebellion.
But yeah could see 100m+ easily!

$100+ million is going way overboard. First, it is not quite yet on the same level as "The Simpsons" during the Nineties, second, it would be rated R.
I think a $50-60 million opening would be likely.
The Walking Dead would do better as a movie right now. If they did one between, say, Season 6 and Season 7, it could open to $65+ million.

Just remember TWD of course has higher ratings because its on basica cable compared to premium. GOT sales trounce TWD in sales for DVD and Blueray by more than a 2 to 1 fraction and of course cultural impact it has done more since it has been mentioned alot more in other forms of media (tv shows, sports network and politics). Hell Sex and the City opened to more than 60 million. I think a normal person would choose to watch a fantasy sword and slash epic over a zombie movie. Also TWD would be R rated too

Re: so... how much would a Game of Thrones film open with?
The total gross amount of people watching GoT through HBO is in the 13-15 million range, and that's out of 35-40 million people, not even counting the number of people that watch it by other means (isn't it the most pirated show ATM by a considerable margin?). Also considering people that would get into the series between now and a theoretical movie, plus people that might go just to see an event, and considering the frontlaodedness of movies that are continuations of TV shows, a $100+ million OW seems totally reasonable to me, even if it doesn't achieve a 2.0 multiplier. I mean hell, a one-week-only IMAX screening of two episodes that had been available for almost eight months (and which weren't even that acclaimed on their own) made almost $2 million. That still amazes me.

If so many people pirate the show and don't pay HBO to watch the show why all of the sudden would they fork over money to see it on the big screen? The film would probably make about $100-125M total for its run.

The tv downloads were in HD1020 quality so of course there is much more incentive to download rather than going through so many layers to get HBO on tv.

I'm sure there are tons of people (including myself) who watch the show online but will for sure see a film in theaters.

Re: so... how much would a Game of Thrones film open with?
Why would someone want a film, from a fan point of view, not HBO and Warner Bros.?
Pros: - bigger sfx budget. - if they plan it out and the film is just a big budget final two episodes of the final season that releases the weekend after the HBO series ends, could be cool but market would be very limited for non-fans
Cons: - less face time for characters - likely a hard push to tone it down to PG-13 - likely a tonal shift - condensed story, depending on what they tell - need to tell an origin story to tie in non-fans - what story do they tell? Random Dunk and Egg? - GRRM dies during the long production process and a canon fight occurs with Internet backlash.

There is no way a GoT film would be PG-13.

There are 3 Hobbit films and a split in Hunger Games book 3, Robocop, Die Hard, and Terminator films are PG-13, and has there ever been an adult focused fantasy film wth a large budget that made money? In between lines of coke, some Hollywood exec, hearing about the backlash with online folks over the rape and violence in Got is thinking "why not make this pg-13 and add more potential fans and hardcover fans will come anyway?" These are the same folks that merged AOL and Time Warner.

It would not be PG-13. The makers know exactly what the fanbase appreciates the show for.

Re: so... how much would a Game of Thrones film open with?
Quote: Game of Thrones ratings have reached new heights in season 6.
U.S. viewership of the HBO fantasy hit have now surpassed 23 million viewers episode when all forms of viewing are counted (that’s originals, repeats, DVR and streaming).
Even with the season not yet finished and data still incomplete, that tally is up 15 percent from season 5, which was the show’s previous record holder. http://www.ew.com/article/2016/06/23/ga ... -readstoryAnd as I said back in October, these numbers aren't even counting the number of people that consume the show through non-HBO means, of which I am sure there are many. Granted, a movie is looking less likely now that the creators have said that they're doing a 7-episode seventh season and a 6-episode eighth season, but I still think that a grand finale theatrical movie would wreck the hell out of the box office its opening weekend. It would be hella frontloaded, but a $50+ million opening day honestly wouldn't surprise me.

That ain't cheap. Then you can get HBO for additional money. No way to get around paying for 80+ channels you don't want just to watch HBO. Which is ridiculos. So downloads are the more logical way of watching a show.

It would be very front loaded, but I could definitely see it open to 80-90 million.

The movie won't happen still. If its true I am happy that they are thinking about finishing the series on a high note in 13 more episodes.

Re: so... how much would a Game of Thrones film open with?
I've been thinking for a while that they may do the series finale in theatrical release. If they did it, I think it would be a one-weekend only type thing.
It would do $100m easily. No question.
Episode 9 and 10 of this past season is Oscar nomination type stuff (Art Direction, Cinematography, Costumes, etc.).

Re: so... how much would a Game of Thrones film open with?
I'm still holding out hope that they would do a movie based on the finale since 13 episodes is too few episodes to cover the plot lines so far. If they did end up being able to finalize all the storylines in the series finale, I think that here still would be a movie but it won't be a prequel but just a continuation of story lines from Tyrion, Jon or whoever is still alive.
I wonder if it could give Deadpool a run for biggest R rated opening weekend
