Post Is May 2015 too heavy on female films?
I know we always say that more female-centric should be released in summer, and the numbers back it up. May 2015, however, seems to be an overcorrection to past performances and The Avengers dominance in 2012. You have a Carey Mulligan drama opening directly against it, which is fine counter programming. After that things start to get a little crazy. The next week has a buddy action movie starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara up against Mean Moms, the kinda-sorta Mean Girls reboot starring Jennifer Aniston. The week after sees the debut of Pitch Perfect 2, something that every chick seems to love, and men pretend to like to impress females. The week after is the new Paul Feig spy comedy, starring Melissa McCarthy . Feig has had two highly crowd pleasing female-centered films, Bridesmaids and The Heat, and it's likely that Spy will make it 3/3. May then closes with a Cameron Crowe movie going against Insidious 3 ... which has replaced Patrick Wilson with a teenage girl.

And that's just the movies that girls will make up the majority of the audience. Contrary to popular belief, girls also love The Avengers. Why not? Marvel is awesome. It's also very likely that Tomorrowland will appeal to females, since it has a sorta father figure + magical daughter thing going on.

Surely something needs to be done or all these films (sans Avengers) will canabalize each other. If things stay the same, Mad Max will be the only man at a clam bake. That could lead to a huge overperformance. I say that moving Mean Moms and Insidious 3 will at least keep things reasonable, but Spy might need to move too if it wants to maximize its potential. June 12th has Jurassic World vs Entourage, surely there is room for some X chromosomes in there.

Mean Moms doesn't actually have a release date anymore. It was pulled out of its May slot a few months ago.

I don't think the Mean Moms movie is moving forward, at least yet. You can scratch that one off.

We all know Pitch Perfect 2 is gonna slay everything else though. #acascuseme

I am looking forward to Pitch Perfect 2.

After looking at the schedule... WTF. The only thing worth anything between Ultron and Jurassic World is Tomorrowland. Who the hell scheduled 2014 May... and then scheduled 2015 May?!

We had Spider Man, Neighbors, Godzilla, XMen, Maleficent, Fault, 22Jump, Transformers, Apes, Lucy and Guardians almost all back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back weeks.

Next year it's Avengers, ..., Pitch Perfect?, Tomorrowland, ..., Jurassic World, Inside Out, Ted 2, Terminator, Minions, and Ant-Man. May looks really weak. I'm fine with spreading movies out... but goodness.

Eh, it doesn't look too bad. At least it's not like May 2014 where too many huge films were released at one time and ultimately none of them did over 250 million. They could move something on June 5 though.

I can't blame the studios. Look at what happened to the films released after The Avengers in May 2012...

I always thought this as well. They need to at least move Spy to later in the summer.

The latter half of the summer could have really used Batman vs Superman. It's a shame it moved. Likewise with Assassins Creed leaving the schedule - something like Warcraft would have been a perfect addition.

I think Pitch Perfect 2 is fine, as that will skew younger but Spy will definitely kill Untitled's legs.

WTF is that going to get named anyway?

It will never happen, but I'd be so happy if they released it as Untitled Cameron Crowe Drama. I'd probably give it money just for doing so. I'll never forgive Shark Night for pussing out on that.

I meant the Sofia Vergara Reese Witherspoon movie. But the Cameron Crowe one too.

Last I heard the Reese Witherspoon/Sofia Vergara comedy was going to be called Don't Mess With Texas but they can't call it that due to licensing issues with the Texas PD or something.

May 2015 seems to have as much competition as May 2012.

May 2012 didn't have so many flops because of The Avengers. It was because they just looked unappealing.

I agree and I think there being more female films that don't have a huge budget helps.

I think Tomorrowland will be fine on Memorial day as there is no big 2nd week holdover and the biggest other film will be on its 4th weekend.

Avengers Age of Ultron will be number 3 come Memorial Day

Week 1- 225 million
Week 2- 99 million (-56%)
Week 3- 50 million (-49%)
Week 4- 32 million (-37%)

As long as it doesn't look as bad as Tammy, Spy should exceed 32 million opening.
