from a sales point of view, she is. But as I said, she lacks that transcedence to me IMO that Beyonce has. I think Beyonce is more important than TSwift.

I'd chalk a lot of that up to her appeal being largely limited to the yts.

So many white hipsters worship Beyonce, the reverse isn't true for Taylor.

Then where are her legendary performances? Where's her Slave VMA performance or her super bowl halftime show?
Where are her legendary songs ala ...BOMT, Oops!, Toxic, Single Ladies? Sure, she has had huge songs, but not a single one has created mainstream impact like the songs I mentioned.

She's far more known for her love life than her career as a performer. Britney and Beyonce are known for being the best performers of their generation and two of the bests pop performers ever.

A lot of it has to do with Beyonces age. It's "weird" to worship a pop legend who is younger than you.

Tay is bigger. And she's one of, if not the, biggest female artist of all time.

In the U.S. she dominates the album market to a far greater degree than Madonna ever did.

Worldwide, Madonna (and Whitney, among others) was obviously much bigger.

Tim McGraw, Should've Said No, Fifteen, Our Song, Fearless, WANEGBT, You Belong With Me, Love Story

All HUGE hits. Just because you're a Britney cuckold, doesn't mean Tay isn't much bigger.

the singles off Taylor's debut album only hit top 10 on the Country charts lol

The only, er, ""classic"" songs she has that resonate are Love Story and You Belong With Me.

Taylor right now is what. Birntey was in the late90s early 00s. She still has a loooooong way to go to be considered in the "all time greats" category. And i'm not arguing with someone that thinks Taylor has more iconic hits that Beyonce and Britney.

In this decade, Adele has a bigger album than any of Taylors so hard to say that Swift dominance is that great even if just looking at album sales.

Madonna did have Whitney come after her two LPs so she was't completely dominant either. So I think both really aren't actually great examples.

Plus, I'm talking whole package: album sales, singles, concerts, and most of all, image. That last part is hard to quantify but it's a significant part of the pop-star role.

21 is an anomaly/outlier to such an incredible degree when you consider that like the only other album in history that could even hope to contend against it in terms of success would be Thriller.

It remains to be seen if Adele can replicate anything on that level again, meanwhile Taylor has had four consistently huge albums over the course of the past 10 years, and has been more of a pop culture presence.

It's not just albums, either, her lack of #1 singles on the Hot 100 kind of belies how incredibly strong her single sales are and the fervor/breadth of her fanbase in bringing about huge debuts for even random track releases.

She's also pretty much peerless when it comes to touring success at such an early point in her career, and on this point she in particular she blows her contemporaries out of the water in the U.S.

Not irrelevant. She's been around for 8! years. EIGHT! She's barely scratching the surface.

If we bring up age... Britney eas bigger than Taylor was at her age, hell, Britney at 18-24 was he biggest star on the planet and on the levels of MJ and Madonna.

Right now she's bigger than Beyonce ever was. Right now she's just/almost as big as Britney ever was.

She's only going to get bigger.

You do realize she's leaving Country and a large part of her fanbase is from there, right?

It wasn't significantly bigger than Mrs. Carter Show World Tour.

Age is also irrelevant in this discussion.

Yeah, I guess you're right on that point. Mrs. Carter Show averaged $1.56m over 42 dates while Red tour averaged $1.64m over 59 dates in the U.S.

I would say age does matter to a certain degree, though. The veteran acts with an older audience (equipped w/ more disposable income) are the ones atop the all-time tour lists.

TSwift is young in age but her debut was in 2006. Yes it was country but it still helped establish that base for her.

She's a verteran act. A young one but a veteran.

I meant more along the lines of The Rolling Stones, U2, and Madonna lol.

Taylor doesn't have the artistic cred that Beyonce has. I.e, Pitchfork just named Beyonce's last two CDs in its Top 30/40 of the decade thus far. Adele, Taylor, Britney, Gaga -- don't think they were on the Top 100 list at all...

It's also easy to dismiss Beyonce's cultural influence because her single sales/ Billboard ranks haven't been huge since Single Ladies. Whatever. She's gone viral/ meme three times in 2014.

Taylor has a huge fanbase (and that includes myself -- not even ashamed, love me some TayTay)... but she casts herself as a very 'in the moment' artist. Like Katy Perry, actually, a few years ago. Her works aren't transcendent... but they're massively appealing.

But when we look play bar trivia in a few years... Are people going to be expected to distinguish "We Are Never..." from "Shake It Off" and point to one as the moment where Taylor went pop? Don't think so. More people will identify "Flawless" as the song where Beyonce overlays a TED talk over a trap beat.

Beyonce and Taylor are at different places in their career. Beyonce is a cultural ambassador, Taylor is a pop star. They're both household names, but they have entirely different objectives. Taylor, like Katy Perry, doesn't have an interest in being the center of everyone's universe the way Beyonce does. They each are at the top of the game in their respective categories. And they each make a shitload of money.

How is Britney Spears argued for in this thread? I know Mau is the ultimate Britfan but her time is long-gone. I know she was huge for a few years there, but that time has passed. Even a hit here and there afterwards is just bonuses for her, nothing has brought her to the forefront of pop music in the same way as Taylor or Katy.

I wish I got Beyonce, but I don't. Just not my music unfortunately. But I get why she's huge.

Sorry Mau, but Britney doesn't sing live, and therefore cannot even be included in the conversation. Taylor has a grammy for best album, and even though cds don't sell anymore, she sells a million in her first week every time. She has a legion of lifelong devoted fans. Yet I can't say that she has ever moved the needle of pop music, like Gaga did. Taylor is more like Kanye than any of her fellow pop stars. She exists in her own separate universe, and millions of people are willing to live there with her.
