KJ's 2014 Fall / Winter Box Office Contest

After a just-OK summer, it's time for a *hopefully* much better season of movies to do well. Even if they don't (I'm looking at you September and October), they'll still be fun to predict. The Top 5 of the season will be tricky as always.

Remember, what other box office game can take you as little as 15 minutes to play, but provide enjoyment for 4 months!! :)

The season's contest covers movies released from September 5th, 2014 to December 31st, 2014. The player with the most points at the end of the game will receive a $25 gift card.

How the Points Work
Spoiler: show
Each player predicts the total domestic box office grosses of 25 movies listed further below. It's the ultimate test in box office predictions: guessing a movie's potential final gross before the season even starts with few, if any, tracking numbers. For each movie, the top 25% of players who predicted most accurately will get 3 points a piece.

Players can also score bonus points. The first is the Top 5. Each players will predict the fall/winter season's five biggest films. Each rank correctly predicted with score 1 point. An extra bonus of 15 points is given to any player who correctly predicts the Fall/Winter 2014 Top 5 in the correct order. (This has still never been done in the 4+ year history of this game.)

Finally, players predict the answers to ten various box office questions. A correct answer scores 2 points.

Ties are broken by who has the lowest total difference between each of their movie predictions and the actual total. Backup movies are in place in case any of the 25 predicted movies change their release date. (Once a movie moves its release date outside our season window, the first backup movie comes into play.) Box office questions will only be voided if the movie with the release date change is specifically mentioned in the question, so be careful when crafting your answers.

Don't really see why that would be funny. It's Disney after all and this is a family film, unlike Les Miserables. It's also not 3 hours.

Les Mis is the fifth most popular musical ever. Into the Woods didn't even run for 1,000 performances.

This is the wrong thread for the discussion, but it comes down to Disney + Christmas release date + fairytale/magic + Meryl Streep + Johnny Depp, not just the popularity of the source material.

Lol if Into the Woods makes more than Les Miserables.

Don't really see why that would be funny. It's Disney after all and this is a family film, unlike Les Miserables. It's also not 3 hours.

The musical is 3 hours, just as long as Les Miserables. Hopefully they don't shorten it too much.

Unbroken was a great book. It has great movie potential. Done right, it could win Best Picture. But no one seems very bullish on it for some reason.

#10 is especially tricky this time around. I see a lot of potentials:

Dear White People
Foxcatcher
Whiplash
St. Vincent
The Book of Life

I think you all have even named a couple more options too. It's hard to tell at this point which one is going to get a big studio push and which will remain small releases. But that's part of the fun! :)
