Melinda and Melinda? What's up with that?
I ran a check and didn't find anything, so please lock if this is a repeat?
What is going on with Melinda and Melinda? Seriously, I noticed Scott expressed some surprise last week over the whopping 74,000 screen opener. I told myself it was one theatre in Manhattan...Woody Allen hometurf. I noticed it expanded to 95 screens this weekend and still held up over 7000/theatre. That is remarkably high in general isn't it? Even more so for a film like this. Is it Will Ferrel? I don't understand how this movie is nearing 1 million already. I can easily see it breaking 5 if not reaching 7 at this point.

According to THIRTEEN box office performance, "Melinda and Melinda" will be lucky to gross more than $4 million in US.

THIRTEEN even gets much better reviews than "Melinda and Melinda".

I couldn't find a weekly/end breakdown there. Nor would it let me at BOM because I don't have a premier pass. Does anyone have one that could post Thirteen's numbers so i can see why the prediction for Melinda and Melinda is under 5 million? I doubt it with such good numbers. Like sm2005 and moviedude just said, wider release, bigger cast, and the director clearly has a name. I also think thirteen was just much more heavy, and dramas about kids withering away don't go over quite as well as adult drama/comedy movies. I Don't think there is any way this could bring in less or even equal to Thirteen unless its due to the fact 13 had big "shock factor" which lead to long legs, and had some up and coming actresses.

Thirteen sucked. I think it's the most overrated movie of all time next to the Passion (but, at least that's understandable...)
I'd say it's not only because of Will Ferrel, but also because of the reviews. This is, like, Woody's return after a series of bombs. Even the critics who didn't like it have said that it's better than Jade Scorpion, Small Time Crooks, Hollywood Ending, and Anything Else.
Frankly, I think this could get a wide expansion and make it to $10m+. Otherwise, it'll probably make around $5m, which isn't bad considering Anything Else didn't even make $5m in wide release.

Fox Searchlight only palns to expand to 300 theaters. (for "Melinda and Melinda" )

RogueCommander just posted the weekly/end breakdown.
However, "Melinda and Melinda" gets mixed reviews.
Getting mixed reviews is a big hurt for an arthouse movie.
Like I said before, I think that "Melinda and Melinda" is a kind of movies that can expect strong numbers in a few select urban areas but wash out everywhere else.

It could follow a pattern similar to last years I (heart) Huckabee's which also opened with over $70,000 per theater. It expanded slower though, so I definately do not see Melinda and Melinda ending with $12 million.

Not really, I Heart Huckabee got very mixed reviews and WOM as well. It got 59% in RT, while Melinda is at 56%. They could have similar paths.

I any case, I will see Melinda and Melinda as it is supposedly Allen's best in years.

Rhada Mitchell has been getting a lot of publicity, being touted as a rising star, that is helping steer some people to it. But mostly I suspect it's Farrell. There has been a big void in the entertainment industry where Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin and Bill Murray occupied 15 years ago. Farrell is the closest thing we have now to one of those comedians of that type.
Considering the cast, I'm surprised the movie hasn't gotten a wider release.

I wonder about this one. Does anyone have the BO stats for his recent outsings? Perhaps since Mighty Aphrodite, which got a Academy Award, so was probably his biggest grosser in recent years. I think Anything Else (?) only got about 2 million total, and I have no idea about Picking up the Pieces, etc. Clearly this is going to blow those out of the water. It must have something to do with cast, as several have mentioned. Ferrell and Rahda? Also, last year was completely devoid of this style drama. I think Eternal Sunshine is the only one, and that was a year ago. Romdramadies (ehehehehe!)

Last weekend, The movie doubled its exposure to 195 screens and registered a wan $2,836 theater average.
This movie will be lucky to gross little more than ANYTHING ELSE in US.
However, this movie is doing well in overseas. I think that this movie will make profit on ancillary sales(from home video to pay television).
PS: This movie's budget is under $15 million.

Not too good at all, I doubt we'll see much more expansion coming up. At this point I don't see it making more than $3.5 million at best.
