 Re: True Detective
I'm still not the biggest fan of this series but there's no denying how incredible the last 15 minutes of the fourth episode were especially that final scene. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it.

 Re: True Detective
Dangggg... ok, so I had no idea where this was going for episode 5 (except for what was in the preview snippets). I didn't think we would be at this point. And the ending was so eerie. Great episode!

 Re: True Detective
I feel like True Detective just dropped the mic for the second week in a row. The raid on Reggie Ledoux was so tense, and the fact that it was becoming apparent Rust and Marty were covering something up in the present as the scene went on only added to it.
Those drawings in the school at the end were freaky as all hell. This show really gives you the heebie jeebies in very simple ways with the pervasive feeling of dread.

 Re: True Detective
Dannnngggggg. So although the plot progression of some of the characters makes sense, the reasons behind them were unforeseen to me.
Can't believe only 2 episodes are left.

 Re: True Detective
This episode wasn't quite as good as the last two, but it seems like it could/should be Woody Harrelson's Emmy submission tape. He's really doing a fantastic job showing the rot bubbling throughout Marty's character. Maggie having sex with Rust (P.S. thanks for throwing me a bone with the McConaughey butt shot there HBO) and then throwing it in his face was pretty damn cold yet somehow totally sympathetic.
Speaking of pretty damn cold. Rust to the baby killer lady: "If you ever get the opportunity, you should kill yourself."

 Re: True Detective
Michelle Monaghan was great last night. I loved the scene between her and Woody Harrelson near the end and the whole encounter with McConaughey. I couldn't believe he got off on calling her a whore though.
That "kill yourself" line was crazy too. As was the parking lot encounter.

 Re: True Detective
More of a "breather," bridge episode to the finale last night. Which is OK, because this still like the best thing on TV.
Marty's reaction to the snuff video and yet another hella creepy ending with Scar Man were appropriately haunting.
Also, can someone please edit that damn Obama picture in this thread? It's throwing off the margins everytime I open this thread and it's annoying as shit.

Finale tonight! I would like more Gas Man, please. I haven't been this excited for a finale in a while.

 Re: True Detective
A strong finale. The chase/shootout in the bayou is as exciting and frightening as it should be, and the final moments outside the hospital are poignant. I am glad it ended with the main characters, each wounded and alive, still helping each other out while also wrestling over their respective philosophies. I will try to learn to live with McConaughey's bad-ass nihilist finding God. Oh, and in regard to the aforementioned showdown, I dig how they generated so much suspense without placing a child in direct peril, avoiding the Criminal Minds tactic of alternating between the detectives in final pursuit and a knife slowly lowering toward a victim. I wonder, however, if this season's endgame might reduce it in the eyes of many academics and critics, particularly the way the murderer is conceived, including the design of his straight-out-of-Texas-Chainsaw house and its elaborate displays of carnage and insanity. Earlier in the season, there was a more general and provocative sense of contempt, dread, moral decay, etc. at play. The overweight incest slashers slightly deflated this through their colorful and grotesque screenwriter specificity.

That was a great finale, McConaughey gave another powerful and emotional performance - I almost had tears in my eyes at the end.

Magnus wrote: I loved the finale. It re-emphasized that at its core True Detective is about the relationship of two men with each other and the overall struggle between good and evil. There was no crazy twist, no out-of-nowhere message. The killer was a psycho, and deserved a bullet in the head and got it. It was crazy all the buzz this was creating about "The Yellow King" and all sort of crazy theories (a ton of people thought that Marty was somehow involved, or his father-in-law). In the end it was really a True Detective, that is just some guys who are really good about putting pieces together to find a crazy psycho. Nothing supernatural. Magnus wrote: And Rust finding heaven is the perfect ending to his character. He found heaven, and then woke up. What a great character.

 Re: True Detective
Rust and Marty's chase through Childress' compound was the literal stuff of nightmares. Deeply creepy and tense in a way that puts most horror/thrillers to shame.
And I loved the ending with Rust's new connection to the other side. Deeply powerful stuff. Another triumph for McConaughey.
I'm pretty sad this season is over. What a stellar endeavor from all parties involved. Hope they get some great talent on board for season 2.

 Re: True Detective
What was the deal with the "portal"? 100 percent just Rust hallucinating because of the lingering effects of a head injury?

 Re: True Detective
Season 2 hints from Nic Pizzoletto: Quote: What’s the update on season two? I am still fleshing it out. The basic idea: Hard women, bad men, and the secret occult history of the U.S. transportation system. I was well on my way in the writing but there’s been a lot noise and work around the end of the first season that got in the way. http://popwatch.ew.com/2014/03/10/true- ... -and-hart/Interview is worth reading.

 Re: True Detective
Just finished episode 4, I have a lot of problems with the show but that episode and the ending were really great. My main problem with the show is the case and story is just not engrossing enough, in E04 they were able to rack up the storytelling intensity for once.
McConaughey's performance for the show overall is one of the ages in film/TV

 Re: True Detective
What I didn't like:
- I thought the first two episodes were not that gripping. The show foudn its footing in the third episode.
- Rust's optmistic change at the end, him finding his "daughter", while dying/in coma didn't sit right with me or his character.I know some will disagree, but I don't really see him reaching that point.
What I liked:
Everything else.
Great series. My first reaction to the "Yellow King"-revelation was being underwhelmed, but after re-evaluating it and accepting that the series leaves some stuff unanswered on purpuse, I think that was the best way to go about it.
I would have loved to see a "True Detective"-style of treatment for Stieg Larsson's Millenium-Trilogy. That would fit them far more than just 2.5-hour movies.
The second season is gonna have such a tough time measuring up.

 Re: True Detective
God, I loved this show. Finally finished all eight episodes. From start to finish, it was fantastic. Creepy, atmospheric, exceptional. I almost wish this was it because I don't want them to even try topping themselves with a second season, even with all new characters.
I never pictured myself rooting against Cranston at the Emmys, but McConaughey deserves it. Too bad Woody is getting overlooked because, without McConaughey stealing the whole thing, he does a great job as well. Hopefully he sneaks in there with a nomination.

 Re: True Detective
So is Taylor Kitsch.
I'm more interested in who they'll get for the female lead. Jessica Chastain was their first choice before she passed, so really curious to see who it ends up being.
Farrell could do great with a project like this. And gain a ton of goodwill.
