Re: Return of the All-Time Top 100 Movie List Thread (Libs)
I believe the most recent film on my list is Never Let Me Go from 2010. I saw it three or four times in theatres and have watched it an untold number of times on Blu-ray. I feel my love of it is defensible beyond in-the-moment excitement. I do believe multiple viewings are important. It is a bit of a douche move to go, "Oh, I watched Stagecoach in my film class today, and now it is my second favorite movie of all-time!" A top-100 choice should have a chance to dig into your mind. It should haunt you or be an old friend.

50. Being John Malkovich (1999, Spike Jonze) Delightfully bizarre, a subversive mind trip and comic journey. Hilarious but surprisingly introspective too. 49. Requiem for a Dream (2000, Darren Aronofsky) A horrific, devastating film experience. Illustrates the darkness of addiction far better than any PSA ever could. 48. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968, Stanley Kubrick) Groundbreaking sci-fi. True cinematic art. 47. Election (1999, Alexander Payne) One of the most biting and razor-sharp comedies I've ever seen. The performances are perfect all around (seeing Matthew Broderick play the anti-Ferris Bueller is amusing) but what makes Election is Reese Witherspoon's work as Tracy Flick. We've all known annoying overachievers but Witherspoon takes the character to another (almost frightening) level. 46. Inception (2010, Christopher Nolan) A mind-bending and shockingly enthralling movie. Highly cerebral and intellectual but also extremely fun. 45. Casablanca (1942, Michael Curtiz) Like The Godfather, I'm not sure what I can say here that hasn't already been said a million times. Shows how sacrifice and love often go hand in hand better than any other film. 44. Toy Story (1995, John Lasseter) I'm kind of lumping all three (wonderful) films into one package here, but the first Toy Story is a spectacularly animated, emotionally resonant movie that changed the game for animation forever. 43. Sleepless in Seattle (1993, Nora Ephron) Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan were known in the 90s for their on screen collaborations, especially this film. What's interesting is that they don't share a single scene until the very end. That's how potent and affecting this film is. One of the very best romantic comedies. 42. Fight Club (1999, David Fincher) A masterpiece mostly misunderstood when it was first released in October 1999 due to Fox's shoddy marketing. I remember not wanting to see this when it came out because it just looked pointless, about a bunch of amateur dudes fighting for some reason. Then I saw it and was blindsided. It's about identity, it's about rebellion against consumer society, it's about the emptiness of the modern experience. Frankly, it's about whatever you want it to be.

Silver Lining's Playbook is a fantastic film, and not a boring choice, but too recent for me to really respect Libs' list. I feel a film should have simmered down from the hype, then watched again, before claiming it as the best ever. I don't buy into the whole "You can't add recent movies!" argument. If a movie strikes a chord with you after watching it, it doesn't matter if it's brand new or an old classic you're watching for the first time. I just watched Fight Club for the first time. I can add it to my top 100 because it's almost 15 years old, but I can't add Silver Linings Playbook (it would also make my top 100) just because it's only a year old? You know movies aren't fine wine, right? You can love both old AND new movies just the same. I can't believe I'm arguing this. You definitely can add recent films. But it is quite subjective to do so, and you cannot truly know how it makes you feel until the hype has passed and you view objectively. That's all I meant. Incase it escaped your mind - these Top 100 lists are always subjective. Always.

Requiem for a Dream is almost too much of a downer. I believe Trainspotting is a superior drug movie in the way it conveys both the positive, even euphoric draw (a sense of community outside the mainstream) and the eventual comedown.

Given you already saw it 4 times and are such a Stallone fan I think it's a justified question. I'm not the biggest fan of adding too recent movies either and thought about it a lot during compiling my list but the ones I included (Skyfall, Django, Dark Knight Rises), just belong there, I feel. What I don't do is adding a movie after just one viewing. I do need at least a little time and a few more viewings to see if it's worthy to be in an all-time list.

Films like Oblivion, Skyfall and Escape Plan definitely have the potential to be added to my Top 100 eventually, but just like you said, I will need to see them a few more times over the span of a few years, and if they still wow me, then they may be added. Then comes the decision of where to put them, at which stage they could still be rejected from my Top 100 because I'd have to compare them to #100, and if I prefer that movie to the new addition, then it's not getting in. That's also why I keep a Top 150, so I have some extra slots.

Anyone else but me easily prefer Adaptation. to Being John Malkovich? I dig "Being" a lot, don't get me wrong, but I believe Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman dialed their energy and wit up even further with Adaptation., plus the amazing performances of Cage, Cage, Cooper, and Streep.

41. Psycho (1960, Alfred Hitchcock) A masterwork in tension and suspense from the master of tension and suspense. It's amazing how frightening the iconic shower scene still is despite the film's age and prevalence in pop culture. 40. Stand By Me (1986, Rob Reiner) Oh, the coming of age movie. Tried and true. And this one is wonderful. A poignant and bittersweet story that captures the nostalgia of growing up perfectly. 39. Love Actually (2003, Richard Curtis) Romantic comedy euphoria. It's sugary enough to send the unprepared into sugar shock but that's all part of its charm. I've watched this movie every Christmas season (and sometimes other parts of the year) for a decade. 38. Thelma & Louise (1991, Ridley Scott) A rarity: a buddy movie about two women. Thelma & Louise stirred a lot of talk at the time about whether it was "man bashing" and what it meant for feminism. Leaving all of that aside, the film is powerful and exhilarating. The famous ending strikes all the right bittersweet notes. 37. Goodfellas (1990, Martin Scorsese) Stirring and incredibly effective depiction of organized crime. First rate through and through. 36. Rocky (1976, John G. Avildsen) This is dedicated to my best friend Algren. Inspirational sports movies are a favorite subgenre of mine, and this is the ultimate. The series got progressively less interesting over time, but the first film stands out as a powerful source of inspiration. 35. Finding Nemo (2003, Andrew Stanton & Lee Unkrich) My personal favorite Pixar film to date. Not only is the film stunningly animated and very funny, its heart is unparalleled. It's amazing that the filmmakers were able to make characters who are fish universally relatable but they did. 34. Mean Girls (2004, Mark Waters) One of the most rewatchable and quotable movies of all time for me. Nails the social hierarchy of high school "girl world." Perfect. 33. Seven (1995, David Fincher) An extremely disturbing look at moral decay and the utter bleakness of particular aspects of society. Gets under your skin and stays there. 32. Beauty and the Beast (1991, Gary Trousdale & Kirk Wise) Tale as old as time, true as it can be... Beautifully rendered and immaculately conceived. One of the most purely delightful movies of all time.

I like A League of Their Own and Thelma and Louise.
I have mixed feelings about Being John Malkovich. I like its settings. But I feel there is a disconnect between it and what happens around it. A mismatch. A wasted concept. A pretentious attempt.

Mean Girls is overrated. Never got its "cult status". Maybe because I'm male and because I have never been to an US high school.

Mean Girls is good, but I definitely prefer Easy A and consider that the best recent teen movie.
