70. Fantastic Mr. Fox Wes Anderson 2009 honestly, 2009 was such a fucking great year for animation, with so many unique gems. 69. Carrie Brian de Palma 1976 i thought this de palma fellow was gonna be shit, but my love of 'well, that escalated quickly'-style commentaries made this one a great surprise. 68. Mary & Max Adam Elliott 2009 the third 2009 animation on this list, a wickedly insightful and genuinely sympathetic look at asperger's. 67. The Pianist Roman Polanski 2002 given my distaste for the sentimentalisation of war, i'm not sure why i like this one so much. but the manipulative play between pianos, war and sadness did me in. sue me. 66. United 93 Paul Greengrass 2006 been a long time since i saw this, and my tastes have changed a lot, but this was such an astonishingly tortuous experience back then that i can't leave it off.

The sentimental piano music fooled you into feeling sorry for the Jews, eh?

I'm way behind on 90s Soderbergh. Sex,Lies and Videotape has been in my queue forever, same with The Limey.

Traffic is my favorite Soderbergh, but I love a lot of his movies. Sex, Lies... and The Limey are superb. And his recent run, including films such as Magic Mike and Side Effects, is highly worthy, too.
I also have an unapologetic soft spot for his version of Solaris.

60. I'm Still Here Joaquin Phoenix 2010 it doesn't matter that it was a hoax. the public and the media succumbed to the point he was trying to make anyway. 59. Black Swan Darren Aronofsky 2010 creepy over-the-top theatrics representing psychological torture. 58. Der Himmel über Berlin - Wings of Desire Wim Wenders 1987 a sentimental love story, but a great one. 57. アキラ - Akira Katsuhiro Ôtomo 1988 the most ridiculous crescendo ever. makes no sense whatsoever but a great example of how extreme indulgence in cinema yields awesome results. 56. Eyes Wide Shut Stanley Kubrick 1999 totally underrated kubrick. drunk/high kidman is awesome.

55. M Fritz Lang 1931 fritz lang is generally a genius. trial by beggars is amazing. 54. Fight Club David Fincher 1999 to me, this movie is obviously - obviously - an utterly vicious satire of idiotic male fantasy. this is clear throughout pretty much the entire movie. it represents the male fear of emasculation through consumerism, conformity and feminism and then proceeds to tear it apart with the most vitriol it could possibly express. some people don't seem to get the satire. hell, many of its most ardent fans would love nothing more than to suck tyler durden's dick and do everything he says in the name of freedom. but whatever. great movie. 53. Chinatown Roman Polanski 1974 a perfect puzzle. 52. His Girl Friday Howard Hawks 1940 a highly satiric comedy on media superficiality. i think i like this style of ridiculously fast dialogue. truly hilarious with a fantastic assortment of mildly sociopathic characters. 51. Trois Couleurs: Rouge - Three Colours: Red Krzysztof Kieslowski 1994 a great end to a great trilogy. though i've never been convinced that each one has been about what it's supposed to be.

I love the entire trilogy, but White > Blue > Red.
Eyes Wide Shut is a very solid choice.
Black Swan is creepy and neat, but overrated.

Oh, and controversial statement, but screw it: I can do without the American screwball comedies of the 1930s and early 1940s almost entirely. Even the ones everyone masturbates over (Bringing Up Baby, It Happened One Night) don't cut it for me very much.

50. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut Trey Parker & Matt Stone 1999 brilliant satire of both america and musicals. 49. Taxi Driver Martin Scorsese 1976 new york. 48. La città delle donne - City of Women Federico Fellini 1980 massively underrated fellini picture that exaggerates feminist women and masculine men in the most absurd way. 51. Det sjunde inseglet - The Seventh Seal Ingmar Bergman 1957 it's rather hard to argue against a movie in which death plays chess. 45. Le mépris - Contempt Jean-Luc Godard 1963 godard's best, and his most philosophically coherent.

45. Moulin Rouge! Baz Luhrmann 2001 an ecstatic candy-coated sugar rush of a film. one of the most wildly unique things i've seen. pure entertainment and sensory delight. 44. La nuit américaine - Day for Night François Truffaut 1973 one of the best movies about movies. 43. 12 Angry Men Sidney Lumet 1957 best one-room film? that i can think of, anyway. 42. Le samouraï Jean-Pierre Melville 1967 the quintessential film-noir in my mind, with all its beautiful silences. 41. The Fly David Cronenberg 1986 tragically beautiful, and also disgusting.

Le Samouraï is a strong inclusion. Le cercle rouge is my personal favorite Melville, but a lot of his films are great. Bob le flambeur is a blast. Army of Shadows is a major achievement. And so on.

We had Rohypnol before. Some of the new picks are the equivalent of Ambien, Lunesta, Rozerem,.... Still, two more matches.
