Re: HK 12/27: Les Mis sings forte; Ralph finds extra coins
Quote: Registering record market openings for a musical in South Korea, Hong Kong and Australia, Universal’s Les Miserables costarring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Ann Hathaway drew a weekend total of $38.3 million from a total of 1,698 venues in eight markets, lifting its early offshore cume to $48.7 million. ...
In Hong Kong, the opening gross was $1.6 million including previews at just 31 playdates. Les Mis total actual - $1,521,016, not quite as strong as the THR report but an excellent start nonetheless.

More good news for Les Mis. It will hit a new high today in admissions. It should beat its Saturday admissions with about 33k, possibly more.

December 27 Weekend Actuals
1. Les Misérables - $1,521,016 (weekend actual) 2. Wreck-It Ralph - $1,831,928 3. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - $4,165,702 4. Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2 - $2,133,809 5. CZ12 - $1,025,621 6. Jack Reacher - $838,558
Others The Guillotines - $181,902 (weekend actual) Life of Pi - $5,302,272 My Sassy Hubby - $1,297,831 Naruto: Road to Ninja - $32,252 (weekend actual)
All films in top 5 were underestimated. The Hobbit was especially underestimated by $85,000. Clearly, it's continuing to play strongly on weekends. Nice upward adjustments for the rest.

10 | Naruto: Road to Ninja | -- | 996 | -- | -31.5% |
Les Mis didn't move a lot at night but it managed to post a slight increase over Saturday's admissions. Wreck-It Ralph had a big daily drop compared to the rest of the top 10 but had an excellent drop from last Monday. Big drop for BD2. It fell a little bigger than BD1 on NYE's. Good holds for CZ12 and Jack Reacher. Meh for The Hobbit. Another awesome hold for Life of Pi. Terrible for The Guillotines. This is getting lambasted by users. Surprisingly good for My Sassy Hubby but it won't last. Just ok for Naruto. It fell the most from Sunday because it had little to no night shows and people had to work today so they couldn't take their kids to see this.
| Tuesday adm. | (so far) | | | January 1 |
Rank | Title | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | Les Misérables | 18,059 | 16,590 | -8.1% | -0.2% |
2 | Wreck-It Ralph | 15,075 | 7,484 | -50.4% | +29.4% |
3 | The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey | 16,218 | 5,691 | -64.9% | +10.9% |
4 | CZ12 | 11,202 | 5,430 | -51.5% | +26.9% |
5 | Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2 | 21,504 | 4,508 | -79.0% | -15.1% |
6 | Jack Reacher | 8,893 | 3,210 | -63.9% | -6.6% |
7 | Life of Pi | 5,571 | 3,187 | -42.8% | +17.5% |
8 | The Guillotines | -- | 2,112 | -- | +13.7% |
9 | My Sassy Hubby | 3,162 | 626 | -80.2% | +11.0% |
10 | Naruto: Road to Ninja | -- | 384 | -- | -- |
Powerful stuff from Les Mis. It along with Wreck-It Ralph are the 2 clear winners of the Christmas season. Great hold for Wreck-It Ralph. It is resonating with audiences young and old and will clear 2m today. Bad for The Hobbit. If it doesn't make at least 11k today in admissions, it will be a disaster. After this weekend, it should be at 4.4m. 5m is going to be close. Nice hold for CZ12. Ouch for BD2. Falling 70% from Christmas is likely. Good news is that it will become the highest grossing Twilight movie of the franchise today, dethroning the first Twilight from its longstanding perch. Not good for Jack Reacher. Life of Pi did outstanding. Let's see how well this will do without the holidays now. Nice increase for Guillotines after yesterday's hiccup. Terrible for My Sassy Hubby. Much better for Naruto.

Great for Les Mis. Pretty good for Wreck-It Ralph. Solid for CZ12. Disastrous for Breaking Dawn 2 and The Hobbit. Average for Jack Reacher. Amazing hold for Life of Pi. Not great for Guillotines. My Sassy Hubby did horribly. Better for Naruto.

Re: HK 12/27: Les Mis sings forte; Ralph finds extra coins
Normally I wouldn't write a goodbye post but I think my readers deserve one.
For a while, I've been growing more disinterested with box office numbers as a whole. It's pretty much why I stopped commenting on domestic box office and stuck to the HK thread the past year or so. I first attempted to leave after The Avengers opening but that didn't last. I decided to just stick around until the end of the year and then move on. Well, it's that time.
Thank you to everyone here at WoKJ. I've made some awesome friends in my 5 years here. 3 years I've been analyzing, predicting box office numbers with the rest of you and I can honestly say I had a lot of fun.
Thanks to my readers. I enjoyed providing you with box office numbers and a little taste of what people in HK like.
I want to give a shout-out to Karl. You are an awesome guy. I can't thank you enough for everything. It's people like you who make coming to KJ so fun and worthwhile.

Re: HK 12/27: Les Mis sings forte; Ralph finds extra coins
I doubt The Last Stand will do much in HK. I went Friday and only about 10 people were in the cinema that housed about 200. Django is a different story. It had lots of people, about 40.

You're quite right. I checked the daily tracking chart at wmoov.com yesterday. Django had less showtimes but sold more tickets than The Last Stand. As of this posting, for Sunday Jan 20, 2013-01-20 15:49:45 HKT 1. The Grandmaster/WK 2/266 showingsHK$1,351,110/22,230 tickets sold 2. Les Misérables/WK 4/132 showingsHK$1,103,030/13,730 3. The Impossible/WK 2/177 showingsHK$921,380/14,812 4. Django Unchained/NEW/128 showingsHK$569,980/6,378 5. The Last Stand/NEW/206 showingsHK$376,510 /6,337 6. Life of Pi/WK 9/22 showingsHK$166,835 / 2,301 7. Wreck-It-Ralph/WK 5/28 showingsHK$122,375/1,671 8. Young and Dangerous: Reloaded/WK 2/51 showingsHK$110,790 /1,831 9. Gangster Squad/NEW/66 showingsHK$79,510/ 1,255 10. Anna Karenina/WK 2/17 showingsHK$77,390/ 1,129 Bad scheduling at its worst! Three violent movies made a killing in HK this week. Despite its III rating (Under 18 not allowed), Django Unchained delivered the best number of the openers. Name recognition (Quentin Tarantino) and award buzz helped it a lot. The Last Stand, while having more showtimes than Django and a softer rating, generated fewer tickets. Comparing its performance in here to that in the US, Arnold's star power still kind of works internationally. Gangster Squad was clearly the victim of the week. Aside from competitions, you can blame it on the movie's US-centric setting being obscure to Hongkongers. Holdover The Impossible achieved quite the impossible in its sophomore weekend, increasing at least 5% in gross. Les Misérable and Life of Pi are both leggy. Life of Pi is closing in on US$6 mil in total gross while Les Misérable has entered the US$4 mil territory with ease.

Ugh, that still makes for unpleasant reading, though. Les Mis, in its 4th week, is atop The Last Stand in its first week.

Re: HK 12/27: Les Mis sings forte; Ralph finds extra coins
Thanks for the messages. I really appreciate it. :) There's something I don't think you will even notice if I don't mention it. Silver Linings Playbook was #2 this weekend but it was a very strong runner-up. It grossed $350,000 this weekend and has a grand total of $412,000 with sneak previews. The most impressive thing about its opening weekend was that it was only playing in 17 theaters. Its PTA was more than $20,000 this weekend and its the 1st semi-wide release to gross above $20,000 for the weekend. Jack winning over Playbook doesn't tell the whole story here. By the way, you can follow me on twitter. Ask me any question and I'll answer. You can refer to me as Bluebomb if you like. But this doesn't mean that I'm returning, however I'm not ruling anything out. We'll see.

So I went to see it opening day, first showing. Fucking awesome.
The back three rows were packed, the bottom five were not, so that's about 60 people in a 150 seat theater, which is pretty impressive I thought considering it's a work day and this movie is not a huge blockbuster. Here's hoping it stay until next week so I can see it again.

 Re: HK 2013 Q1 down 2%
Hi everyone. For anyone wondering why I've been running off only to come back again, I'd like to explain to my friends and readers that I really intended my post in January to be my goodbye post. My disinterest in box office as a whole and things happening in my life made me really stressed out and forced me to reevaluate my situation and I thought it would be best if I just left. But after a few months, it looks like the worst is over so I've decided to come back again. Algren, do you remember asking me about that site with all the phone numbers with the orange background? I think I found it. Here. If you need to ask me a question right away, I am on twitter. And you can check out my blog. I'll be cross posting certain posts from there over here like this one. 2013 Q1 loss down 2%For all those wondering, I'll be covering Iron Man 3 here.
