Nothing went wrong. It's opening day matched the original's opening weekend alone. It's sure to cross $100 million, and a third film will likely be made. The first is one of my top five favorite films and the second, while not as fantastic as the original, is a worthy and already underrated sequel.

So which way do you think they will approach the third installment? Ring Zero or Ring Three?

I've heard rumors that it will be a prequel about the origins of Samara, but hopefully it will be a third installment, with Naomi Watts, David Dorfman and Gore Verbinski all returning. The second was very open-ended so they could definitely make a third easily.

I acknowledge that a percentage of the population thought the movie was overrated/not-scary, as I've talked to a few of 'em myself, and others have expressed such thoughts on messageboardland. But I doubt that's how the majority of people felt.
The reason I haven't seen The Ring Two? Bad buzz, bad reviews. I'm a college student, I've got very little non-drug related spending money, and I can't afford to take a chance on a (more likely than not) craptastic movie.
So instead I saw Million Dollar Baby with the ol man. Now that was money well spent. Some movies are better on drugs.
Don't have to tell me that.

The third or fourth film in Japan is a prequel, but they added elements of that into this film, so I'm not sure if they will go that route for an entire movie?

Just stop with the Prequel garbage.. 2 movies were enough and anymore and you run a risk of reducing this to some sort of Freddy or Jason type of bullshit where the chick from the well starts becoming invincible or something stupid like that.. ](*,)

They should have one more and then wrap it up. But if they do one more, they need to do it right, getting Gore Verbinski back along with Naomi Watts. Otherwise it won't be worth it.

Too late for that.
One of the first thing's I thought of when I left the theater on Firday night was "Samara is now Freddy Krueger". Shown way too early and too often in the film, given speaking parts, and just generally not scary.

Yeah in a way, they sort of humanized Samara which can be both good and bad. The whole motive was to explain that she just wants someone to be her mother

I hope this ends all Japanese directors' attempts to serve up garbage here.

Well, it's bad if you're actually trying to scare people.

A good comparison to this is The Blair Witch Project. Its sequel bombed, because it is an event film then, just like The Ring was. Luckily, The Ring Two had good advertising and wasn't super horrible so it will make at least half of the original.

Its chances at $100 million are almost zero now. Unless it holds up very well next weekend (which it won't).

I'm looking forward to that also. I am tired of poorly made horror movies that are more laughable than scary.

Sorry, but they will keep on coming.
DARK WATER, THE GRUDGE 2 and THE EYE are both in development, and THE RING 3 will probably come too.

"Ring Two," starring Naomi Watts and David Dorfman as a mother and her brooding son who are haunted by an evil entity and a mysterious unmarked videotape, pulled in $36 million in over the March 18-20 weekend, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said on Sunday.
The new film, which opened in 3,332 theaters, fell slightly short of studio executives' expectations of around $40 million. But it handily surpassed the $15 million opening weekend of its predecessor, "The Ring," which bowed in 1,981 theaters in 2002. Final results will be available on Monday.

I have a feeling the studios are only saying were it's expectations.
The weekend gross is good (though disappointing), but if the movie itself was actually good, the movie would have easily done a $45 million opening, and on Halloween $50-55+ million.
