Re: HK: Amazing Spider-Man average so far; typhoon #3 signal
The typhoon will enhance OW. It happened last time with Johnny English Reborn opening last September. I'm not really sure by how much though. For the weekend, I will go with 3.8m. Even though pre-sales were nothing special, walk-ins have been brisk. The typhoon might even boost it to 4m.
#3 warning signal soon to be in force.

Re: HK: Amazing Spider-Man average; typhoon #8 signal tonigh
Amazing Spider-Man is doing well with walk-ins. #8 signal is going up tonight. That means all public transportation is suspended but there will be no showings overnight so we won't have to worry about that. The worst of the weather could be over by the first morning show tomorrow. I also updated the first post with July and August movie release schedules. Check the first post if you want to see which movies are coming out in August. I will only focus on July's movies for now.
Release Date | Movie Title |
July 5 | Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Painted Skin: The Resurrection Hotaru the Movie: It's Only A Little Light In My Life Elles Late Autumn |
July 7 | The Flying Machine |
July 12 | W.E. Ice Age: Continental Drift The Four |
July 19 | The Dark Knight Rises When Pigs Have Wings |
July 26 | Step Up Revolution Beloved The Pirates! Band of Misfits One Piece 3D: Mugiwara Chase/Toriko 3D: Gourmet Adventure Doraemon: Nobita and the Island of Miracles - Animal Adventure Wu Dang |
Next weekend will be pretty bland. Painted Skin 2 seems like a dud. Abraham Lincoln looks bad and vampire movies never do well here. And it's sandwiched between Spider-Man and Dark Knight. The only good thing that will come out of next weekend is Ice Age 4's special screenings. Elles and Late Autumn are limited-semi limited release movies. Amazing Spider-Man will easily repeat on top. July 12 will be Ice Age 4's only week on top. The previous Ice Age movie opened to 1.9m. At the time, it broke animation records. Even though Ice Age 4 is getting advanced screenings the weekend before, I could still see it making 2m OW. It will be virtually unchallenged and a lot of demand for Spider-Man will have dried up. Amazing Spider-Man will still keep screens though so it won't breakout and exceed 3m. 2.5m is a possibility. Other movies that week are a mainland-catering film and an arthouse flick. July 19 is the biggie. The Dark Knight Rises will steal the show and I believe it will break 2D records. 3.5m OW is my prediction at this point. When Pigs Have Wings seems like a limited engagement film. July 26 will be interesting to watch because you've got 3 animation flicks. 2 steady Japanese anime movies (One Piece/Toriko and Doraemon) then you've got Pirates! Band of Misfits in there too. The anime movies won't make a lot of money but I could see Pirates eking out a $200,000 weekend. Step Up Revolution is looking to build on the 3rd movie's success. There doesn't seem to be a lot of demand for this one though. I see only a $500,000 weekend for it. The Dark Knight Rises will reign supreme once again.

Re: HK 6/29 FRI: TASM good; #8 signal; TDKR IMAX pre-sales
How did TASM's OD pre-sales stack up with recent blockbusters?
Movie | OD admissions | % diff |
The Amazing Spider-Man | 32,580
The Avengers | 47,317 | -31.1% |
Transformers 3 | 44,161 | -26.2% |
Harry Potter 7-2 | 62,089 | -47.5% |
Toy Story 3 | 32,294 | +0.9% |
Pirates 4 | 21,559 | +51.1% |
Shrek 3 | 49,634 | -34.4% |
Not great judging from the list. It doesn't mean much except confirm that TASM will make over 3m this weekend.

4 | The Dictator | -- | 1,787 | -- | -- |
5 | The Bounty | -- | 1,258 | -- | -- |
The Amazing Spider-Man total OD admissions - 64,471 3D share - 81.5% 2D share - 18.5% Good for The Amazing Spider-Man. OD should be about $600,000, maybe slightly more. Very good for Motorway. The Dictator did alright. Terrible for The Bounty.

5 | Prometheus 3D | -- | 364 | --
The storm is suppressing pre-sales for all movies today. I think TASM could get to 85,000 admissions for 3D today. When a typhoon hit HK last time, the #1 film at that time, Johnny English Reborn, managed a 6.99 multiplier from pre-sales to final numbers (8,271 -> 57,796). It's obvious that TASM won't achieve the same multiplier but I could see admissions pouring in throughout the day. 2D version should pull in the same or slightly below number of admissions from yesterday. It should be close to about $900,000 for Saturday for a 2-day total of about 1.5m. Typhoon Warning Signal #8 is now in effect. All public transportation is suspended and will remain this way until the #8 signal has gone down. _______________________________________________________________________ Although I wanted to hold off on this piece of news till Monday, it was simply to great to pass up. IMAX theaters opened up showtimes for pre-selling today and the response has been enormous. Most showtimes are already 30-40% full with peak showtimes nearing the 50% mark. The catch? This was only open to those who have a PPS account. Tickets for the rest of the public go on sale on July 2 but I suspect these showtimes will be 70-80% full by then.

Amazing Spider-Man OD: Between $600,000-$650,000 (no actual given) That is pretty good. While Amazing won't reach the likes of The Avengers/Transformers 3, it should settle somewhere in the HP 7-2 area. June 21 Weekend Actuals

Before anyone starts going on about how TASM increased only by a small percentage, let me point out that the admissions website lost over 10,000 admissions yesterday for the 3D version of TASM. It's probably closer to more than 15,000 admissions lost. 2D version also saw admissions disappear in the middle of the day. There's no explanation as to how it happened. In reality, 3D admissions is closer to 80-85k for the day, maybe even 90k. 2D admissions could have made up to 20,000. With data lost, it's hard to predict but I'm estimating that TASM's opening Saturday is about $950,000. Very good for Motorway.

I expect at least 100,000 admissions today for the 3D version of The Amazing Spider-Man. Have to commend Motorway. It is doing very well even though Spider-Man is clobbering everything.

Re: HK 6/29 FRI: The Amazing Spider-Man OD $600,000+
I just looked at the August schedule in the top post. Two music-themed movies go head to head on August 16: US' Rock of Ages and HK's Diva. Adding to the mix is the latest of the McDull franchise The Pork of Music. To make things more interesting, I suggest HK distributors pick up that Katy Perry movie and release it on the same weekend.

Quote: HONG KONG earned $2.7M on 158 screens, pulling in 84% of the total market. This is the 4th biggest Friday-Sunday opening of all time (behind just TRANSFORMERS 3, AVENGERS, and HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART II.) Possible breakdown of this weekend Fri: $600,000 Sat: $950,000 ( +58.3%) Sun: $1,150,000 ( +21.0%) Mon: $1,000,000 ( -13.0%) 4-day OW: $3,700,000 If The Amazing Spider-Man can hold on with a 10-15% drop on Monday, it would beat Harry Potter 7-2's 4 day OW.

Monday is looking pretty good so far. I'd say there's a possibility for it to make 3.8m for the 4-day weekend.

Re: HK 6/29: TASM 2.7m in 3 days, #4 Fri-Sun of all time
Admissions are not accurate this week but it definitely increased on Sunday by about 25-30%. TASM has been unlucky this week. First, the typhoon didn't help at all. If the typhoon had stayed a little bit longer into Saturday, TASM could have made 4m for this weekend. Second, most theaters didn't schedule any 11 AM morning shows on the weekend which may have had a big impact on TASM's OW by $200,000-$300,000. It's still a very good OW but I think it could have made more this weekend if theaters had scheduled TASM like normal.

Re: HK 6/29: TASM 2.7m in 3 days, #4 Fri-Sun of all time
A reasonable comparison to TASM will be last year's Transformers 3 because they both opened on the July 1-2 holiday weekend.
Transformers 3 made US$5.1 million for the five-day weekend starting June 29, 2011. For the three-day portion, it made about $3.4 million.
According to Deadline, TASM made US$2.7 million for the three-day weekend starting June 29, 2012.

Re: HK: Airport IMAX unveiled; IA4 sneaks (7/7-8); TDKR 7/19
After 6 months of renovations, the UA Airport IMAX is now open for business! The first movie it is showing is The Amazing Spider-Man. That's not all. It has started advanced ticketing for The Dark Knight Rises as well. Maybe this can add another $200,000-$300,000 on OW for the blockbuster movies. _____________________________________________________________________ Thursday schedules

No new openers or films leaving at Tsuen Wan. Interesting. This is a pretty interesting holdover week. None of the new openers this week have made an impression with theater operators and theater chains are giving more showtimes to holdovers instead. You may have noticed that Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is not listed in the new releases for Broadway/AMC theaters. Well, something happened between FOX and the EDKO chain and now the vampire thriller is not getting a release in the biggest theater chain. This may have been because of two movies coming out this weekend: The Flying Machine which releases citywide this weekend and FOX's own Ice Age 4. Ice Age 4 is getting sneaks starting on Saturday which is putting a wrench in everyone's plans. Strong support has continued for The Amazing Spider-Man and with Ice Age 4 sneaks scheduled on the weekend, I suspect that FOX was given an ultimatum (either Ice Age 4 sneaks this weekend or Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter). Obviously, kids film > vampires. I can't remember the last time a Hollywood movie was taken out of rotation after previously being scheduled to showcase. Huge loss for AL: VH. It was tracking in the $600,000-$700,000 and now this loss brings it down to $300,000-$400,000. Ice Age 4 is looking like it will get full day showtimes on the weekend which will kill The Amazing Spider-Man from having a good hold. Sneaks have looked promising with good pre-sales so far. It may even rank #2 this weekend from weekend sneaks alone. The Amazing Spider-Man will be slightly more affected by the Ice Age 4 special screenings than I thought but the new Airport IMAX will help things slightly. Pre-sales are much better than last week's...possibly due to strong word of mouth. Painted Skin: The Resurrection is doing OK. I don't think it will overtake Abraham Lincoln as this week's #1 new release.

Men in Black 3 broke through 6m this weekend and becomes only the 2nd Will Smith movie to pass that mark after Independence Day in 1996.

After half a year, HK's box office has taken in $67.5m so far in 2012. With huge hits still to come from the likes of The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit, The Grandmasters, Skyfall, Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2 and more, the HK box office is poised to climb once again.

The Grandmasters has a stone cold confirmed release date now?
Are Wong Kar-wai films always huge there? Or is this one expected to be more popular because of its subject matter?

No, Wong Kar-Wai films are not big at all. His biggest movie is still his debut, "As Tears Go By", which grossed about 11.5m HKD. This one should become his highest grossing film due to the popular subject matter. Ice Age 4 is tracking really well this weekend. It'll be this year's top animated release for sure.

There was a statement from the studio in April that The Grandmasters is scheduled for a Dec 18 release in Hong Kong and China. A round of promotions has kicked off on Weibo (Chinese Twitter) since then. Wong Kar-Wai is more a critics' darling than box office draw. But his films are always surrounded by media hype. I agree with you that Grandmasters can make more than his commercially accessible debut in nominal gross. I also think it'll be very frontloaded and critically polarizing like his previous film "2046".

Fast Five tripled every other Fast & Furious movie in the franchise. Motorway almost made 1m the weekend before The Amazing Spider-Man came out. I also think it's the reason that caused TASM to have a smaller OW. If Motorway had done below average numbers, TASM would have had a higher OW. i.hope wrote: Bluebomb wrote: David wrote: The Grandmasters has a stone cold confirmed release date now?

I have seen two different release dates (Dec. 18 and Christmas Day) which has made me doubt that Dec.18 release date and I'm also skeptical that it will actually begin showing on Tuesday. A lot of Chinese movies that get released in HK close to China's release date usually starts showing on Thursday.

4 | The Amazing Spider-Man 2D | -- | 5,517 | -- |

Not bad for TASM. It might even fall less than 60% this weekend. Let's see how badly Ice Age 4 affects it this weekend. Painted Skin 2 surprised and exceeded expectations. Beating the original's OW is a strong possibility now. Abraham Lincoln flustered and disappointed. FOX would have been better off throwing this to the wolves the weekend before Spider-Man. At least they have something to look forward to this weekend. Ice Age 4 should beat AL: VH in OW gross and admissions in just 2 days. Motorway is on its last legs but it has had a nice run. Ice Age 4 is doing gangbusters with pre-sales this weekend. Saturday and Sunday admissions will be very close but I expect TASM to nudge out IA4 for #1 on both days.

Re: HK 7/5 THU: TASM on top; PS2 strong 2nd; Vamps eat AL al
| Friday adm. | (so far) | | | July 6 |
Rank | Title | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | The Amazing Spider-Man 3D | 27,614 | 8,778 | -68.2% | +48.0% |

5 | Hotaru the Movie: It's Only A Little Light in My Life | -- | 918 | -- | +45.3% |
Solid number for TASM. Good for Painted Skin 2. FOX made a big mistake releasing Abraham Lincoln this weekend. It could have done a lot better in June or August. Below average for Hotaru.
| | Thursday Actuals | | | | | | July 5 |

-- | 6 | Late Autumn | -- | $7,149 | -- | 4 | 1 | $7,149 |
4 | 7 | The Dictator | $22,364 | $5,501 | -75.4% | 20 | 29 | $1,334,339 |
9 | 8 | Silenced | $4,951 | $4,870 | -1.6% | 5 | 15 | $108,321 |
2 | 9 | Prometheus | $32,508 | $3,931 | -87.9% | 15 | 29 | $3,447,489 |
6 | 10 | Men in Black 3 | $19,757 | $3,381 | -82.9% | 17 | 43 | $5,735,837 |
The Avengers | $12,456,532 |
Snow White and the Huntsman | $1,304,670 |
Sadako 3D | $992,391 |
American Pie Reunion | $608,558 |
Fairy Tale Killer | $395,418 |
So Amazing Spider-Man made almost 4.3m in 6 days. That Thursday number might mean that TASM could make 1.5m this weekend. Its 2nd weekend is comparable to Iron Man 2 which also happened to open on a Friday. IM2's 2nd Friday fell 65% which TASM should easy beat today. TASM is fighting back this weekend but IA4 is definitely going to suppress its weekend numbers. Painted Skin 2 did much better than expected. It'll match or even exceed the original's OW even though the 2nd one is in Putonghua. Abraham Lincoln underperformed thanks to FOX's scheduling mess. A lost opportunity for this film here as admissions seem to be OK at the locations showing this. Motorway is experiencing harsh drops now that newer and heavier competition is out. Very good total though. Bland number for Hotaru the Movie. Good for Korean film Late Autumn. This might achieve a $10,000 PTA this weekend. Heavy drop for The Dictator but great run for it. Dictator has done at least 5x the business of both Borat and Bruno and has nearly tripled Borat and Bruno's grosses combined. Silenced eased only 2% from last Thursday, mimicing last weekend's 3% slip. Could Korean films be the next big thing in Hong Kong? Cliff drops for Prometheus and Men in Black 3 but both films have had good results.

More on the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter scheduling mess this week...UA theaters have only given half day showings to Ice Age 4: Continental Drift this weekend while Broadway/AMC have full day showtimes listed for Ice Age 4. Golden Harvest is also going by UA's route this week...giving only a few showings to Ice Age 4 on the weekend while continuing to show Abraham Lincoln for the full day.

Later on in the year, Ko Chen-Tung (柯震東) will hope to replicate his success last year with a new movie called "When A Wolf Falls in Love With A Sheep". It is tentatively scheduled for release in October. This is Ko's follow-up to the Asian smash hit "You Are the Apple of My Eye" which became the biggest Chinese language grossing movie (in HKD) in Hong Kong. Wolf is a romance film about a guy who works at a photocopying place (Ko). One day he notices a drawing on the back of a piece of paper and a love story blossoms.
This film will be something to watch out for in the fall.

Re: HK: Ice Age 4 plunges into theaters; TASM bulks up
| Friday adm. | | | | July 6 |
Rank | Title | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | The Amazing Spider-Man 3D | 52,569 | 25,496 | -51.5% | +70.3% |
2 | Painted Skin: The Resurrection | -- | 15,452 | -- | +13.6% |
3 | Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 3D | -- | 10,167 | -- | +28.4% |
4 | The Amazing Spider-Man 2D | 11,902 | 9,137 | -23.2% | +65.6% |
5 | Motorway | 7,157 | 2,712 | -62.1% | +32.6% |
Nice jump and good hold for Amazing Spider-Man. By comparison, Iron Man 2 bled 65% on its 2nd Friday. The 3D and 2D admissions combined have given it a hold of less than 50%. With the 2 combined, it retained 54% of its business from its opening Friday (-46%). If it maintains these types of holds on Saturday and Sunday, TASM could gross 1.7m which would take it to 6m in just 10 days! Painted Skin 2 had the lowest jump of the top 5. Even though it was a bit frontloaded, it will rebound this weekend. It is still favored to beat its predecessor's OW even with the slight hiccup. Not great for Abraham Lincoln. It will be interesting to see if this can get the action crowd this weekend or will audiences go back for more Spider-Man. Weak hold for Motorway.
| Saturday adm. | (so far) | | | July 7 |
Rank | Title | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | The Amazing Spider-Man 3D | 31,491 | 17,835 | -43.4% | +103.2% |
2 | Painted Skin: The Resurrection | -- | 8,456 | -- | +66.0% |
3 | Ice Age: Continental Drift (3D Can.) | -- | 6,281 | -- | -- |
4 | Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 3D | -- | 5,340 | -- | +124.8% |
5 | The Amazing Spider-Man 2D | 4,972 | 4,725 | -5.0% | +28.0% |
Missing: Ice Age: Continental Drift (3D Eng., 2D Can.)Amazing Spider-Man is showing off its muscle now. Strong word of mouth is really pushing people to buy tickets in advance. It did lose at least 10,000 admissions last week but it has been displaying good legs so far this weekend. Good recovery for Painted Skin 2. $600,000 could happen. Good start for Ice Age 4. This could hit 30,000 admissions today. Wicked bump for Abraham Lincoln although I am skeptical it will keep up with its huge walk-ins the past 2 days. Exceptional hold for the 2D version of TASM.
