Re: March Predictions
I highly doubt Salmon Fishing in the Yemen out-grosses The Ghost Writer and Beginners. "Well-reviewed romantic dramedy with a quirky title starring Emily Blunt, Ewan McGregor, and Kristin Scott Thomas." Moviegoers in Peoria can't wait.
The Lorax - 44/159 Project X - 9/20 John Carter - 24/58 21 Jump Street - 33/98 The Hunger Games - 48/134 Mirror Mirror - 15/37 Wrath of the Titans - 49/124
Butter - 5 mil. Jeff, Who Lives at Home - 5 mil. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen - 7 mil.

Having said this, I'd love to be wrong. It does seem very charming. But American audiences almost always turn their noses up at Ewan's starring vehicles. And Emily Blunt is a total Carey Mulligan/Mia Wasikowska/Jessica Chastain type star, where Hollywood loves her, but few in the general audience are going to buy a ticket based on her name on the poster.

Re: March Predictions
Further thoughts on Salmon Fishing: it's interesting to consider Lasse Hallström's box office record. Excluding the obvious anomaly of Dear John, he's made so many flops in a row: The Shipping News, An Unfinished Life, Casanova, The Hoax. His career arc, along with John Madden's, perfectly aligns with the downfall of Miramax and their brand association with prestige-pic consistency.

The Lorax should be the first movie to hit $100 million and I think the Hunger Games has a shot at $200 million.
I'm going 47/188 on Hunger Games.

Is Butter even coming out? Still no trailer or poster released. If not it wouldn't surprise me, yet another great sounding film The Weinstein Company fucks over.

It'll still come out but probably in like 1000-1300 theaters at worst.

John Carter will be this years Mars Needs Moms and Clash had a lot of bad word of mouth that will hurt this new installment. Plus, I also believe Hunger Games will affect Wrath.

Re: March Predictions
Wrath will be big, IMO, but I'm definitely predicting low for John Carter. Not feeling it at all. Why should a huge audience show up? Because, darn it, Disney spent tons of money on this, and John Carter was supposed to be huge? Not enough.

Re: March Predictions
And you know really, The Hunger Games could pull in a $100M OW. I mean the month is empty enough and especially if John Carter doesn't break out and if 21 disappoints then the chances increase quite a bit.

Re: March Predictions
Eh, I'm truly not sensing enough hype to start discussing a 100 mil. opening. I feel a lot of people are remembering how they maybe slightly (or grossly) low-balled Twilight at the beginning and, with this one, are coming from a place of:

Re: March Predictions
Yeah but there are more people reading Hunger Games right now then Twilight before it came out from what I have seen through Facebook, Twitter, and just other big sites.

Re: March Predictions
But aren't those sites a lot more prevalent and widely used now compared to when Twilight's literary popularity was burgeoning? So the presence of any film, novel, TV show, etc. will seem larger...

I for one, and I'm not claiming to be the most plugged in person but still, haven't heard nearly as much about "Katniss" as I did Edward or Jacob or Bella.

Wrath will drop a lot from Clash, sure, but 100m for any film of its budget and appeal seems virtually secured.
Disney wrote off Mars Needs Moms before it opened, and rightfully so. They're going all out for John Carter in the next month, starting with a Super Bowl spot this Sunday and preview showings in the following weeks. Early trailers were pretty weak but TV spots are everywhere and they're looking a lot better. Disney seems to have faith in it, and because it's Stanton's passion project, I do too. I think an opening around 10,000 BC is a pretty conservative prediction.

It won't get that many. If the date isn't pushed back it will be a limited release. I think they'd be stupid to release it then. It's too soon when they haven't been advertising it.
Silent House is supposed to be out March 9th though it's not on the Box Office Mojo schedule.
too much faith on the hunger games, and no one seems to give a shit on john carter, both are based on best seller books,
does anybody know when there will be previews for both films??

Re: March Predictions
Anyone who thinks hunger games is going below 50m is just delusional at this point. The marketplace is WIDE open for a blockbuster film, John Carter has no chance of being it, and this is just perfectly poised. I keep hearing about it, and the book actually has a good reputation so it's not just preppy teen girls but a really diverse group of 14-24 aged women at this point. Plus it should have a lot more indifferent men considering the sci-fi and action nature of it, I just can't see below Twilight at this point.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

Only released 100 years apart!
If John Carter bothered to market itself as an inspiration to Avatar, rather than a complete rip off, interest would be higher.
Hunger Games meanwhile has all the momentum it needs to become a smash.
John Carter of Mars (A Princess of Mars Series) BOOKS were released 100 hundred years AGO; many hollywood sci-fi directors, including James Cameron, have stated that they have been inspired in these novels (John Carter) when they were creating their own films, so it's not a rip off,,,,,,google it

but probably close to no one to which the film is marketing to will know about the books. Everyone in the core group knows about Hunger Games even if it is just through title name.

Re: March Predictions
Exactly. Disney's advertising campaign has completely failed to communicate the enduring significance and influence of Edgar Rice Burroughs and his sci-fi/fantasy creations. To at least 98% of the general public, the movie will just seem a standard-issue mid-tier epic along the lines of Prince of Persia.
It doesn't even have the striking visuals of Avatar. It's all orange-tinted deserts.
