Those ratings worry me. I dont expect to to reach Boardwalk Empire's number but considering it cost more to make than BE and only received have that rating, that cant be good. I already had my reservation when its preview only got 0.7 million on par when True Blood came out. You know who I blame

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/na ... 38177.aspx

Cant really expect them to order premium cable when the series is geared to a younger audience than the 30 to 40 somethings who order HBO

HBO needs to find other means for people overseas to watch the show without illegally downloading it

And BTW Eagle, the reason why Rome had a season 2 is that HBO split the cost with BBC over the production budget for the show. Even Rome garnered around 4 million viewers on its first episode. I just want the show to get high enough ratings to garner future seasons

It cost the same to make as BE, and BE's ratings significantly declined before rising slightly at seasons end. BE and GoT are fighting for one spot IMO, barring one of them getting a significant bump in the ratings. I personally think BE will decline or stay steady next year, the key for GoT is steady growth. It needs to grow starting week 3 (week 2 is obviously gonna go down).

I'm really hoping this is HUGE overseas where this genre plays better, that alone may get it a longer run. I know I'll be buyin the Blu Rays.

This.

I don't see why I should cash out $11 bucks a month (do also note that you can't have only HBO, you need to have at least a standard cable carrier, so you need to pay that fee + then pay extra HBO fee if you want to watch GoT - that's how it workd here) to see episodes at a predetermined time when I can for that money buy boxset later and watch the show anytime, anywhere, anyhow...

i could understand that. I wish HBO would take advantage of using ITunes and charge $2 per episode download. Then again if people pay $15 a month to see silly vampire stuff like True Blood, there has to be a demand for paying the same amount to see a big budget fantasy on the small screen. Besides you are pretty much just paying $20-$30 for the whole series since they end in around 2.5 months

BTW Boardwalk Empire did bore me at times so I can see the ratings dropped quite a bit. Not saying its a bad show or anything

But yeah like Eagle in addition to HBO, Ill definately buy the bluray discs too if it means gets a second season

I woudnt worry too much just yet guys.

The multiple airings will certainly dilute that initial ratings number - but overall it should end up in the 3-3.5m range which isnt all that bad. Plus I think WOM is great on this so far - so it should pick up better than BE did. (And Im a big BE fan - but the pilot wasnt all that great).

Also - this show has had the biggest overseas pre-sales of any HBO show ever - so when you factor in the OS $$ and later Blue Ray/DVD sales etc - HBO will generate solid coin.

That said - the show will have to hold better than BE to ensure a 3rd season (they will do a 2nd).

I just want them to get to the end of Storm of Swords - that in itself would ensure that this is one of the all time great TV achievements.

Agree El Murato, regarding making shows like this more accessible to TV auds overseas.

I was one of those thousands who downloaded the show last night because it wont air here for another few months. But I will be buying the DVD/BlueRay regardless.

Was thinking of showing the pilot to friends to hook them, but then they'll just download the show. So I may wait and try and get them to buy the DVD/BluRay or even give a gift or two.

I heard that when HBO reports their numbers, they don't just report the first airing, but rather all the views from all formats. Or at least that's how I think they did it for BE.

Back to the show itself - what did you guys think about the actors/charecterisations?

I thought the actors playing Jon Snow, Dani, Arya, Bran and Robert stood out and were better than expected. Fairley was good as Cat, any concerns now gone. Bean and Dinklage are perfect for the roles as expected.

Yes which is why the viewer numbers will be higher than 3m. BTW - how many airings did BE have in the same time-frame?

It was still a pilot and only so many characters they can cram into 55 minutes. I wish they would explain Viseryl Targarian's actions little more because the book makes him seem more pathetic with him being nicknamed the beggar king by the locals. The pilot doesnt quite explain it but then again they may explain it in later episodes.

Majority of the big review publications seem to raving alot about Maisie Williams performance as Arya so she may get an emmy/golden globe nod. I would have thought that if anyone getting nomination it would be Peter Dinklage and Aiden Gillan who plays littlefinger

I really want to see season 2 because three of my favorite characters from the series is there:Davos, Stannis and the manly Brienne

Is Maisie more involved in the upcoming episodes I guess? I mean she was good in the pilot but she wasn't on enough to really warrant emmy consideration yet. I do agree that Dinklage or Bean should be ones currently that should be thrown into any Emmy consideration.

The more I think about the pilot, the more I love it.

The critics to be fair were reviewing 5 episodes that were sent out to them. Dont forget about Aiden Gillan. Him having a past acting nod for the Wire and the academy loves their bad guys especially one well written as littlefinger

yeah that line had my brother who has never read the book go shit over that. I expect to see alot of people randomly in other forums have that as part of their signiture or some variation of that

Very much so - Arya (Maisie's character) is a major part of the series. Probably more so than any of the Stark kids beside Jon. Though Bran and Sansa also get good air time, while we never get a POV from Robb's perspective in Book 1.

Stark kids in order of importance:

Jon
Robb
Bran
Arya
Sansa
Rickon

Spoiler: show
I think over the remaining few books Arya and Bran may leapfrog everyone and become #1 and #2, and for obvious reasons they'll certainly leap Robb as time goes on. But the only way you can say that to this point Arya's been more important is because we read from her POV more, and I don't buy it, her role has been too small thus far IMO ... can't wait for future books.

I think we can agree that so far Jon and Robb have played the more important parts...

Spoiler: show
and that Robb not having a POV hurts his case a little in the books but not so much in the tv show as im sure he'll get good air time, I'd say Sansa indirectly has a major role to play. But I do think Arya will get more air time than Robb or Sans because she experiences so much on her own, as opposed to being in the Queens court or leading an army. Hence my reply to JMovies. You can see the setup in the pilot thats for sure. Personally, im not that big a fan of the Arya chapters.

Look forward to Dance of Dragons to see what Jon, Bran and Sansa are up to.

Rickon we can forget about - unless George sees him as the wild warrior who will save the world in A Dream of Spring ;)

Yes which is why the viewer numbers will be higher than 3m. BTW - how many airings did BE have in the same time-frame?

They report the original viewing + reruns. So we will get all the numbers. But the BE number everybody's throwing (4.8m) is the original airing, so the same number will stick for GoT. The all showings number is more for HBO's show and tell purposes.

Looks like while US numbers may disappoint, overseas numbers won't. Pulled in a ratings record on Sky Atlantic (UK).
