Remember all the Best Picture nominees still in release usually get a boost the week after from the free publicity Sunday night.

Only the Best Picture winner has any long term benefits.

So Aviator, Million Dollar Baby, and Sideways will all increase next weekend. How well they do Sunday will decide the size of the increase.

My predictions for next weekend's new movies:

THE PACIFIER - 29.1 MILLION
BE COOL - 13.5 MILLION
THE JACKET - 3.9 MILLION

Even if GET SHORTY was a hit, BE COOL just looks dumb and unfunny from the previews. The cast will bring people in though, and really die-hard fans of the first. But still, I can't see many people running out and seeing it. THE PACIFIER will be taking away business from all ages and people looking for comedy will likely be going with this one over BE COOL.

Diary of a Mad Black Woman will likely add a large number of theaters but, from the word of mouth I have been hearing it may still drop heavily next weekend.

As for the openers:

The Pacifier: $28.5 million
Be Cool: $11.0 million
The Jacket: $4.8 million

If I may put in an ad for a minute, I will be running the next Survivor game, which should appeal to all the predictors here. I am arranging the game so that you will be teamed with others (at first) based on the number of your posts, so that "newbies" won't all be eliminated first. It will all be above-board and open and honest (on my part; what you do behind the scenes is up to you) so I hope you'll join. See the thread in the games section.

And now back to your regular scheduled thread.

I don't know man, when I was going into the theater there were a ton of people coming out of Diary of a Mad Black Woman, and they were all going on about how amazing and life changing it was.

Htch drop = to large = even with openers

Be Cool and Hitch are both urban comedies. It will drop around 35%.

Hitch isn't necessarily "urban" just because it stars Will Smith. Obviously, it's reaching a huge audience if it's going to make $19-20M in its third weekend.

The same goes for Be Cool. Despite the rap element, it should be able to achieve a fairly wide audience.

But Be Cool is also an urban comedy with whitey as the lead. How many urban comedies with a whitey as the lead do well with the audience? If I recall Hollywood Homicide, Bullworth, and Malibu's Most Wanted bombed. The only comedy with a gringo as the lead that did well was Bringing Down the House but thats probably because Queen Latifah had the same air time as Martin

Those weren't advertised well. They didn't look that funny. Be Cool will surprise and do almost Starsky & Hutch numbers.

Wonder if AMITYVILLE trailer will be attached to BE COOL, as both are MGM.

Wow, I guess I'm the only one who sees Be Cool being #1? I guess everyone here is too young to remember what a big hit Get Shorty was and how it's gotten consistently more fans in the time since from being shown on TV, cable, video, DVD, etc. And even if it wasn't a sequel, people seem to like the trailer since it has such a great cast; it seems to have as much buzz as Starsky and Hutch and Dodgeball did last year, at least from what I'm seeing. The Pacifier should do okay, but it looks like another "tough guy taking care of kids" movie like we saw with "Are We THere Yet?" and it has some tough comedy competition against Be Cool, Hitch and the rest.

Be Cool $26 million
The Pacifier $22 million
The Jacket $5 million

But I'm going to wait until Friday night at 11:50pm to post my "final predictions"..that's okay, right? :)
