So, was the Island a place that was between Life and Death?
This was more of a reunion episode, all were done very well, my favorite was the Claire and Charlie one.
Lol, i really dont know what to think, as a reunion episode it was good, but as a final episode it was unfulfilling.

I'd like someone to explain it me, because it makes no sense. The writers stated certain conditions were not what people were speculating during season 1 and 2. If you take this season's alt. storyline and alternative interpretations, it still doesn't make sense. Great series, enjoyable (if uneven) final season, but I don't think it really makes any sense in the end.

No everything that happened on the island was real. What happened happened.

I actually loved it.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD

I'll have more collective thoughts on the episode itself later but my interpretation of the ending: Everything that happened on the island was real, while the sideways reality was a Limbo of sorts. As Christian Shepherd said, some died before Jack, some died after him. So I think the plane carrying Kate, Sawyer, Claire, Miles, Lapidus and Richard probably got off the island and all of them lived their lives for however long...but the sideways reality was a place where everyone's "souls" met up after their deaths, and once everything clicked and they made their connections, they were able to wake up and move on.

holy shit I can't believe it's over

Still, what was the island and how did miraculous things happen on it? what was smokie?
Why does the Island need a person to take care of it?
What was the light?

None of it adds up, even using the writers own make it up as you go along rules.

The alternate timeline began or ended with the shot of the island sunk. So, was that last scene in the church like a millenium from now? Was MIB right in that the continuing existence of the island really was holding them all back from moving on.

Where was Mr. Ecko, Titus Welliver, Charlotte, Faraday, etc? Everybody else is waiting for Jack to come to terms with being dead? A non-existent son, come on...

I loved the finale, the sideways was purgatory and they had to move on. Desmond was trying to get them to move on. As for the unanswered questions, obviously the light is some kind of mystical energy force much like the Force in Star Wars or magic in Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. It isn't like those were explained, although Lucas tried with the Force and look how that turned out. Sometimes it is better if things just aren't explained. Lost has always been about the characters and redemption.

The plane crash at the end was that Oceanic or the plane from this episode? I was confused. It would make sense that the plane crashed since taking off uses much more fuel than just flying, and some of the gasoline would have evaporated since it was sitting there for a while, not to mention mechanical failure at some point was almost a certainty.

I don't think the last scene in the church had a set time. I think they were implying the afterlife is timeless...when Jack died, everyone was there with him, even though it seems safe to assume Hurley/Kate/Sawyer/Claire/etc. lived on for many years after Jack did in reality.

And Christian Shepherd said something about how they all made it so they could find each other in the afterlife because they were the important people in each other's lives. Charlotte, Farraday, etc...they weren't necessarily as connected to the Lostaways on a personal/emotional level as the people in the church, and were thus not present in this reunion in the afterlife. Just my theory. Kind of like why Waaaaaalt wasn't there either...because he got off the island early on and presumably had a fulfilling life with people in the real world.

I agree with you, which is why we didn't need Mr Eko, Ana Lucia, Widmore, etc. Some characters like Richard probably already moved on.

I have one Lost theory that I have thought about more today.

I now believe that Hurley is the candidate.

Here's why...what I'm seeing is that people have turned bad on the island when they become consumed by something that they lost and are willing to do anything to get it back.

We saw it with Claire (wants Aaron back, was convinced by bad Locke that she could get him back and has turned to the dark side).

We saw it with Sayid (wanted a life with Nadia and turned to the dark side).

We saw it with Rosseau (lost Alex and went crazy, though it was never clear if she was good/bad).

We're seeing signs of it with Sawyer (lost Juliet and could be moving toward bad Locke's side).

I believe that something will happen to Sun/Jin (likely to Sun) and Jin will turn to bad Locke's side in order to get her back.

This season, I think we'll see each and every major character on the show turning to bad Locke's side one by one.

Every person on the island will be turned bad to get back something or obtain something, but ultimately they become consumed by it, and turn bad (ex. Claire, consumed by wanting to get Aaron back, is now very much on bad Locke's side as is Sayid).

But there is one person who had it all in the real world and realized that getting everything you want doesn't necessarily lead to happiness. That's Hurley.

I think Hurley is the only one on the island that wouldn't be convinced by bad Locke to turn bad. Hurley won the lottery and had everything and saw the bad it brought out in others and bad luck it brought.

I think this is exactly why Jacob is communicating through him. Miles hasn't seemed to have contact with Jacob yet. As Hurley has the cleanest (blank) slate of the group left over, he can ultimately take Jacob's place. He's the only one who really knows that having everything that you've always wanted doesn't necessarily lead to happiness, which is what bad Locke is using to pull people to his side.

I think even though Jacob is making it seem like Hurley is there to help Jack, I think its actually the other way around. Jack needs to help Hurley beat bad Locke (ex. Jack opened the light house door for Hurley). Jack is central of course to all of this, but ultimately Hurley is the candidate. I believe the last recruit of bad Locke (also rumored to be an episode title of a future episode) will be Jack. He'll be the last one of the main Lost characters to turn, but ultimately Hurley will be able to save the island...

I posted this in March! All of my reasons may have not matched up, but eventually, Hurley had to take over Jacob's place (though after Jack)!

I enjoyed the finale episode. It was impossible for Lost to meet expectations.

I was not a fan of it at all until the last moments, when you found out the alt time line was everyone's afterlife. That was very sad and well done, but otherwise, the series finale was a bit of a flop for me. It was sort of just more of the same of this mediocre season. I'm really not too satisfied with the ending.

Too bad. I did really like seeing Shannon though, she was one of my favorite characters.

I feel like it's a little too complicated to say "everyone died" in the finale. The only people who actually died, per se, were Jack and MIB. For all we know, Hurley and Ben kept protecting the island for another 3000 years at the island reality's conclusion.

But, yes, I suppose technically the sideways world shows them all as "dead."

The problem I have is that all the characters deny their island existence in the alternate/afterlife timeline, even though a character like Hurley spent much more time on the island than off (assuming he held the position for centuries or even milleniums). A character like Ben doesn't have much recollection of any life outside of the island. So, I find it ridiculous, if they reconstructed a life as they wanted to remember it, they would choose the ones they constructed. Especially, someone like Linus that had no life outside to recreate or even imagine. It was just done to mislead the viewer, and they had to cheat to achieve the smokescreen.
