Babe sings with Andrew

By SUN ONLINE REPORTER
ANDREW Lloyd Webber will have an unlikely partner at this Sunday’s Oscars - gorgeous pop star Beyonce Knowles.
The US singer will join the music mogul on stage in Los Angeles to perform a song from his film version of The Phantom Of The Opera.
Lord Lloyd-Webber, who previously picked up an Academy Award for Evita, is nominated for the track Learn To Be Lonely.
He told BBC Breakfast: “I’m going to be playing the song for Beyonce, which is going to be quite fun.â€Â
“She’s terrific. She does it slightly differently, with an orchestra.
“I’ve never done anything like this before, I’m terrified.â€Â
Even though he is performing, Andrew admits he isn’t confident of securing a gong.
He said: “To be even nominated for an Oscar is extraordinary. We were very lucky the first time round, I’m not so sure about this one.
“I’ve been very excited about working on this film, because young people are being turned on to musicals on film."

Beyonce destined for Oscars: Beyonce might not be nominated for any...
http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/ne ... 958939.htm
Beyonce destined for Oscars: Beyonce might not be nominated for any Academy Awards, but she will be the main musical attraction at Sunday’s Oscars ceremony. The singer will perform three of the five tunes nominated for best original song.
She and Josh Groban will sing “Believe,†the Glen Ballard/Alan Silvestri tune from “The Polar Express.†Groban performed it on the movie’s soundtrack.
Beyonce will step in for Minnie Driver on “Learn to Be Lonely,†the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Charles Hart song from “The Phantom of the Opera.†Driver performed the song on the film’s soundtrack.
Accompanied by the American Boychoir, Beyonce also will sing “Look to Your Path (Vois Sur Ton Chemin)†from “The Chorus (Les Choristes).â€Â
Counting Crows will do “Accidentally in Love†from “Shrek 2.â€Â
Rounding out the nominations lineup, Carlos Santana and Enrique Iglesias will perform “Al Otro Lado del Rio†from “The Motorcycle Diaries.â€Â
England honors ‘Producers’: Max Bialystock, the guy who wanted only a theatrical flop but instead conquered Broadway, has now triumphed in London, as well.
Max, of course, is fictional, so it would be more accurate to say that the musical about him, “The Producers,†and the actor who created him for stage, Nathan Lane, are the victorious ones.
After winning an unprecedented 12 Tonys in 2002, including best musical and best actor for Lane, the show Sunday won three Olivier Awards (England’s equivalent of the Tonys), including best new musical and, for Lane, best lead actor in a musical.
A last-minute replacement for the ailing Richard Dreyfuss, Lane won rave reviews from the skeptical London press for his turn as the unscrupulous Bialystock in Mel Brooks’ musical adaptation of his 1968 movie about a producer aiming for a surefire flop, but becoming the toast of Broadway with the Nazi-themed musical “Springtime for Hitler.â€Â
Jazzed-up auction: Lionel Hampton’s engraved vibraphone chimed its way to a $50,000 top price Sunday at an auction of memorabilia to raise money for jazz charities.
Hampton’s instrument nearly doubled the $26,000 fetched by Dizzy Gillespie’s custom-made Martin trumpet.
One handwritten letter from native Philadelphian John Coltrane to his mother in 1964 sold for $16,000; another written by the great saxophonist sold for $14,000.
Items were donated by the musicians’ families. Proceeds from the sale were to go to jazz foundations, archives and young jazz artists.

Best guesses
PREDICTING THE Oscars has become a tricky business. Las Vegas gamblers lay serious odds on the results, and any number of self-proclaimed experts crawl out of the woodwork every spring to toss in their 2 cents.
My personal record over the years is only a little better than 50-50, mostly because the Academy almost always throws in a monkey wrench. In years past, you could bank on the fact that voters would choose the longest, most epic or most socially important film on the list. But lately, the voters have gone haywire and predicting has become more precarious than ever.
n the end, there are only two sure things. Taking into account all the history, the current buzz and monkey wrenches, my predictions will still probably wind up somewhere in the 60 percent accuracy range. That, and host Chris Rock will be funny.
---
CINEMATOGRAPHY
"The Aviator" could pick up its fourth and final Oscar. Its competition here consists of films with few or no other nominations ("The Passion of the Christ," "House of Flying Daggers") or films that no one liked ("The Phantom of the Opera," "A Very Long Engagement"). "Aviator" cinematographer Robert Richardson, a former winner for "JFK," also shot this year's "Kill Bill -- Vol. 2," which did not receive a single nomination. His victory will help ease the pain.
ORIGINAL SONG
The Academy has once again assembled five terrible songs. Andrew Lloyd Webber's new song for "The Phantom of the Opera" might have a shot, but in 2003, the Academy sniffed out the new song for "Chicago" and snubbed it. Songs in foreign languages have never won before, so that casts doubt on the harmonizing boys' choir from "The Chorus (Les Choristes)," and "Al Otro Lado Del Rio" from "The Motorcycle Diaries." Go with "Accidentally in Love" from "Shrek 2," because of that film's perplexing popularity.

Hollywood Gets Ready For Wet Oscars
After recent record rains, crews scrambled to lay and protect the award show's red-carpet entrance.
Security will be tight. As in past years, officers, SWAT teams and roadblocks will circle the Kodak Theatre. Sensors will be inside and outside the hall to monitor the air for toxins.
Meanwhile, organizers prepared to unveil what they billed as a different kind of Academy Awards.
Host Chris Rock, famous for in-your-face comedy and language that would make Oscar blush, said he welcomed the broadcast's five-second delay. He said he wasn't sure what would come out of his mouth.
Gil Cates, the award show's executive producer, said he thought Rock will be "a fantastic host."
"Every host of the Oscars, when they were first hired, was controversial," Cates said. "Johnny Carson was controversial."
Some of the awards also will be presented in a new way. Nominees in some categories will already be on stage, with the winner stepping out of a lineup.
"The Oscars are really facing an uphill battle this year," said Dina Sansing of US Weekly. "Of all the nominated movies, none of them are big blockbusters."

Academy hopes comedian can keep the Oscars from drowning
By Manuel Mendoza
You don't have to be a conspiracy theorist to think that Chris Rock and the motion picture Academy are doing everything they can - including fueling a trumped-up controversy - to boost ratings for Sunday's Oscars.
"You won't believe the halftime show," the 40-year-old comedian says with a gleam in his eye on a commercial for the show.
In other words, tune in or risk missing the equivalent of a wardrobe malfunction.
The promotional spot is supposed to be funny and provocative in the hopes of luring viewers back to the telecast, which has grown stagnant under the Whoopi-Billy-Steve rotation. The trio has taken turns hosting since 1996, the year after the Academy took its last big risk with David Letterman, who bombed because he refused to suck up to movie stars.
The come-on is that Chris Rock is just as dangerous. He won't perform any soft shoe and he won't genuflect to Jack Nicholson.
"Edgy is the word that keeps coming up," Academy executive director Bruce Davis told The New York Times. "I like to hear that people are nervous, because that means you're more likely to watch."
Chris Rock's ability and willingness to make some people nervous is, ironically, what makes so many other people like him. He is arguably the most popular comedian of our time, yet his stage persona may be more than the Academy Awards can handle. And that's why he was selected.
Rock has been feeding this hall of mirrors, particularly in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in which he dissed the Oscars, hip-hop style. He never watches, he said, asking what straight black man does? He also called all awards shows idiotic. Telling the truth is no defense.
Last week, Matt Drudge bit. The conservative Internet nerd found himself defending Hollywood against the comedian's comments, apparently not realizing Rock was trying to do his job and be funny. (Literalist headline: "Host Chris Rock Shock: Only Gays Watch Oscars.") That's exactly the kind of reaction that sucks in people who normally don't bother.
At the same time, Rock and the Academy have been promising he won't go too far. He has repeatedly said he doesn't have to curse to be funny. But he made his reputation on HBO, where his now-defunct show and groundbreaking standup specials are laced with profanity and taboo subjects.
Recently, he's been trying out Oscar-night jokes at comedy clubs, including one about Lindsay Lohan's breasts that won't make the air - at least not the way he told it. But there also were clean jokes in the routines.
The Academy and ABC, which is broadcasting the Oscars, have gone out of their way to accommodate Rock's style without turning his performance into a riff on prison sex.
For a slightly built man, he takes up a lot of space, relentlessly pacing back and forth, so the stage at the Kodak Theatre will be extended into the crowd to make room for his movements and make it possible for him to interact with the celebrity audience.
And while it's changing things up, the producers have decided that some awards will be handed out to the winner in his or her seat and some nominees will be gathered onstage before the winner is announced. It's all intended to revive interest, which has been up and down for years.
There's never been a worse outing than 2003, when Steve Martin hosted, Chicago won best picture and only 33 million viewers tuned in. Last year's Lord of the Rings fest climbed to 43.5 million but failed to rival the 55 million who watched in 1998 for Titanic.
Rock has hosted other awards shows, namely the MTV Video Music Awards in 1997, 1998 and 2003 without untoward incident. He has studied what past Oscar hosts have done.
"It's just basic hosting," he told Entertainment Weekly. "It's like sports. You get a big lead, then you run out the clock. No one's really going to remember some comedy set piece that you do two hours into the show."
Just in case, though, there'll be a time delay. After all, anything can happen. At least that's what the Academy hopes you think.
YOUR HOSTS FOR THE EVENINGS
When the Academy hires an Oscar host, it usually knows what to expect. Billy is going to be Billy; Whoopi, Whoopi. Here's a look at how the last 10 years have gone:
Billy Crystal (1997, 1998, 2000, 2004) - The gentle insider also hosted from 1990 to 1993. But it was in 1997 that he introduced brilliant movie spoofs to the top of the show. Eventually, he ran the shtick into the ground. The same thing happened to his song-parody medley mentioning best-picture nominees. His style has been to kid Hollywood without getting mean about it.
Steve Martin (2001, 2003) - His 2001 stint walked the line between making fun of and mocking. In the wake of his affair with Meg Ryan, Russell Crowe stayed stone-faced when the host joked that the actor had hit on Ellen Burstyn. He also got off a good line about worldwide viewers thinking everyone in Hollywood is gay. In 2003, Martin was overshadowed by the start of the Iraq war and Michael Moore's rant about it.
Whoopi Goldberg (1996, 1999, 2002) - She has been an envelope pusher, willing to work blue to make her presence felt. Her 2002 lowering from the ceiling in full Victorian garb in an allusion to nominee Elizabeth remains a classic Oscar moment. Also hosted in 1994.
David Letterman (1995) - The talk show host still beats himself up over his poorly received performance, which was funnier than the celebrity audience took it. "Uma, Oprah," was inspired, even if mounting a stupid pet trick was a mistake. But as an outsider Dave brought the same kind of edge the Academy is after this year with Chris Rock.
