BTW, A Single Man got quite screwed.
And The Informant! and Star Trek both missed Score noms...and were replaced by The Hurt Locker?!!!

Re: Official Oscar nominations!
Bleh.
I would have like to see Diane Kruger get a nod. Penelope Cruz for Nine...please.
I can't believe a movie that flopped is going to win BP. It's depressing. It isn't even on the same level as IB. Seriously sick.
Whatever, I'll still watch the dumb show and be happy about the winners in the end anyway but in 20 years it will be IB and Avatar that will be remember the HL will be remember for Bigelow winning director.

Re: Official Oscar nominations!
It doesn#t matter SHIT whether a movie flopped or not. It is about quality, not financial success.
I'd argue that Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is one of the best comedies of the past decade (and I'm sure a lot here would agree)...and that flopped pretty badly as well.

If quality mattered, why is The Blind Side nominated? Obviously, its huge success got it nominated.

Re: Official Oscar nominations!
Happy for District 9 and Up! But I with Star Trek had done better. It was an excellent film.
I'm hoping for an underdog win for Inglorious Basterds. With the new voting procedure, if that's everyones' second choice, it might have a chance.

Though they won't win, glad to see Farmiga and especially Kendrick nominated.

Re: Official Oscar nominations!
THE BLIND SIDE being nominated for Best Picture is such a joke.
I'm sad Julianne Moore didn't get a Supporting Actress nomination (leaving A Single Man with just ONE nomination!), but I'm very happy Maggie Gyllenhaal was nominated. I'm not sure how she is in the movie, but she is overdue for a nomination for past work.
Not one single nomination for (500) DAYS OF SUMMER? Come on! Where is its screenplay nomination? It at least should have gotten that.

Re: Official Oscar nominations!
Shocked that people are unhappy with The Hurt Locker being a frontrunner. At least its way more deserving than shit like Slumdog, A Beautiful Mind or Crash.
And could not be more happier with (500) days getting not one nod. Who would have thought the academy had any sense left after that Blind Side best pic nom.

BLIND SIDE's spot could've went to (500), STAR TREK, FANTASTIC MR. FOX, A SINGLE MAN, BROKEN EMBRACES -- even DRAG ME TO HELL (wishful thinking!) Ultimately, these are just rote nominations -- a complete meh. But I stopped caring about the Oscars anyway when CRASH won over one of the best pictures of the decade.

Re: Official Oscar nominations!
I'm sort of happy with District 9 and Up being nominated and seeing some odd, odd choices (I mean Avatar? Who saw that coming for BP), but... just doesn't feel legitimate. If it wasn't for ten nominees, District 9 and Up would not be nominated.
I don't know... it'll take a few years to feel like ten nominees isn't just too many.

Re: Official Oscar nominations!
Love the ten nominees. And if Avatar can get nominated, so can The Blind Side, which may not have the effects but has the story.
D9 and Maggie getting noms were icing on the cake!

Grand Hotel won Best Picture with no other nominations.

Re: Official Oscar nominations!
The Hurt Locker in best score is a joke and I liked the film. It does show the degree of support for the movie though, and it'll be tough for either Avatar or Basterds to edge it out for picture. Otherwise, pretty predictable nods aside from The Blind Side and Maggie. Nice to see Holmes in Art Direction.

It also shows that Marco Beltrami is well liked by the music branch. He was also nominated for 3:10 to Yuma, another movie were you didn't expect the score to register with the voters. Him and Giacchino are probably the two relative score newcomers most likely to win an Oscar soon. Giacchino will probably win the one year for 'UP'. At least lately they have not been nominating the Santaolalla guy. That win for Babel was a shame.

Inglourious Basterds getting nominated for both Sound categories but not in Costume/Art Direction is extremely odd.

Obviously HELL wasn't going to be nominated, but A SINGLE MAN not getting any technical noms seems like a joke. The score is one of the year's best. I don't even remember the score for THE HURT LOCKER. That being said, I'm still happy for it. It would be a deserving Best Picture winner. Sure, UP IN THE AIR and BASTERDS would be more deserving, but THE HURT LOCKER is great as well and it would be much better than AVATAR winning.
