Fashion Week is a surreality show

BY JACKIE WHITE
Knight Ridder News Service
http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincitie ... 155.htm?1c

NEW YORK — Picture a sea of empire dresses. Think Edwardian jackets, blousy baby-doll silhouettes, velvet knickers, metallic puffed skirts and skirts shaped like pods.

Reflecting a new proportion and shape, the fall clothes on the runways during New York Fashion Week seemed at times a bit surreal.

But then Ralph Lauren had a turn.

On the last day of the eight-day marathon, his simple, long, lean lines and low-key American luxury were a relief from the gloss and flash that earlier dominated the week. It was as if too much rich food produced an appreciation for a lovely broth.

His press notes said the collection was inspired by his extensive vintage car collection. After the show, he said he also was touched by films such as "The Aviator."

He opened with skinny gray cashmere dresses with brown leather elbow patches (a challenge for dry cleaners) and wide, brown belts. A long, gray, slim coat was anchored by a wide brown belt. He sent out trim glen plaid trouser suits and close-fitting pinstriped gray jackets paired with skirts that flared into pleats above the knees. He kept the color chart simple with black, black-and-white, gray and a touch of purple.

Red Baron skull caps reinforced the automotive theme. And gray strappy evening goddess gowns may have enticed actress Emmy Rossum, who had an eye to the Oscars as she watched the show from the front row. "We've just begun to talk," she said of her Oscar gown quest.

The Fashion Week shows took place over eight days in midtown Manhattan and other venues scattered throughout the city. About 1,800 media people were registered to attend, along with major retailers and designers' friends.

The American outing kicked off the fall season. The pundits head to London, Milan and Paris next week.

Emmy's a winner

http://www.bergen.com/

At 12, Emmy Rossum was a student at Manhattan's chic, all-girls Spence School when educators upset with her frequent absences delivered an ultimatum: Spend less time at the Metropolitan Opera, where she had been singing in the children's chorus for five years, or sever her ties with their institution.

She chose the latter.

While she missed out on the usual school camaraderie, the trade-offs were considerable: By night she performed alongside stars including Placido Domingo, Kiri Te Kanawa and Denyce Graves and by day took "virtual classes" sponsored online by Stanford University. At the Met, she also learned breath control, language dexterity and discipline - handy skills when, shortly thereafter, she switched her focus to acting.

That path, like her previous one, has been an education in itself.

---

"Child performers have additional pressures," the director said. "Either they go crazy and become drug-crazed slackers, or they incorporate the training into their DNA. Emmy has an incredible work ethic. She was a young girl of 16 at the beginning of the shoot and a formidable woman at the end."

She never set out to be a movie star, she maintains, and she values anonymity. An Oscar nomination might turn up the heat. But it would also be proof that she's on the right track, she said - part of the fuel that keeps her going.

Yes, she thought of the Oscars as her big break, and its unfortunate that the Producers think that she's not capable or not strong enough......which is stupid because she was once an Oscar Nominee ... :???:

I surrender who I've been for who you are
Nothing makes me stronger than your fragile heart
If I had only felt how it feels to be yours
I would have known what I've been living for all along

Chris Rock on his Oscar-hosting stint

http://www.star-ecentral.com/movies/buz ... =2/22/2005

According to IMDb.com, Oscar host Chris Rock has welcomed the introduction of a five-second time delay on ABC’s television coverage of the event because he can’t guarantee he won’t use any swear words.

The star is known for his use of strong language during his stand-up comic gigs but he’s not worried about any potential slip ups.

The 39-year-old tells American TV show 60 Minutes, “I’ve been on TV and been funny not cursing. As far as content is concerned, I will talk about the movies.

"I’m not really worried about it. I’m sure ABC is more worried about it than me. (A time delay is) a safety net. You know, you’re a trapeze artist…you welcome the net.”
