KJ beats Mojo on a day-day basis outside of the box office forum.
But Mojo IS a box office web site, owned by IMDB.
If it wasn't busier than us in that forum, then we should be very pleased.

Whoa, I can't believe how short the 5 years of KJ feel as compared to how fucking long those 2 years at BOM (pre-KJ) felt.

Re: Why Not Just Close Up Shop Here? (now with a poll)
Mav, you're clearly wrong about BOM being a busier forum. It's not a matter of opinion, it's all facts and numbers in that department. And, this goes back to your original question: If we are doing better than the IMDB backed BOM, then clearly we're not due for closing shop anytime soon. We're actually doing very well for a small individual run web site.
I do think you make very good points about the differences between KJ and BOM. Clearly they have a lot of backing (in money and "star power") and a much more active main site that can draw in newbies. It does just go to show what a sad state their forum is in if they can't capitalize off that more. They clearly are doing something wrong.
I think you over emphasize the main site for a place like this. You can have an up to date main site, but unless you have the backing, dollars, and the big time cache, it isn't going to do jack shit. You can't do a standard movie site and compete with the big boys, unless you can find some really crazy unique hook that stands out from the crowd. Standard reviews and news items... there are better sites for that. That strategy may have worked in 1999, but it just won't today.
Lastly, the fact is we do draw new posters. Not all of us were here in 2004, and we have retained a shockingly high number of people from 2004/2005, despite some leaving. If anything, I see a shockingly low turnover rate, when compared to other internet sites.

I can't believe that we relocated to Dailysmile.org almost 6 years ago. I think the 5 years here went by fast, but it didn't feel as fast as the 2 years prior at BOM did. I enjoyed those first 2 years at BOM quite a bit, for the most part. It's a lot easier to enjoy yourself when you're popular and well liked. This is the only place, be it the internet or real life, that I ever had problems in that area.

It is kinda sad, but my real life did get a lot better, so it's all good. Glad to hear you're real life is going well. That's always much more important than your internet life. I do think it's worth mentioning that there are a ton of people here that have contributed to KJ with their blood, sweat, and tears, and got little thanks in return. I've always felt that Eagle was the poster child for that more than anybody. He bent over backwards and put in more work and money then we'll probably ever know into this site, just so we'd have a place to hang out, and he gets very little thanks or appreciation in return, and a ton of headaches. There have also been countless mods and admins that have done thankless work for the site. Loyal was another one that put a lot of money and promotion for KJ, and I don't recall a ton of thanks that way. That's not unique to KJ, though, and you're the only one offhand that I can think of that seems to harbor ill feelings toward it.

And to state one more thing. I certainly disagree with Mav on the whole dying thing.
I do however fully agree that WOKJ is riddled with problems. Moreso now than ever. Those I'll try to fix in my best knowledge and conscience.

I'm sure you'll disagree, but my observation was that when I was first at BOM, you were a hell of a nice guy and really popular. I remember having a lot of very fun discussions with you. However, near the end of BOM your persona was changing and you were doing a lot more fighting, and that seemed to carry over a little to KJ as a lot of the population from BOM migrated here... only the address changed.

I enjoyed BOM a lot until I did the modding. It became a complete pain in the ass when I did that. However, for me, this site always kicked BOM ass because we can post pictures and swear. Plus Eagle is 50x cooler than the people who run that site.

People's online persona's change when they get bored.
As maybe some have noticed, mine changes all the time.

Amos? Never heard of him. My best guess is that DS failed because I wasn't there. It has to be that!
And Chippy... you are correct. Your internet persona is definitely schizophrenic. I remember the early days when you were pretty reserved, a little quiet, and very non-offensive. You definitely flipped the switch!

BTW, looking at KJ and BOM right now...16 registered users browing KJ right now (if you take away the bots). Five at BOM.

KJ is also very foreign-centric.
We're a niche!

It's been that way everytime I've checked... it hasn't ever been even close. And, this place definitely has more posts going into it. I was actually shocked to see that. I hadn't visited BOM in a LONG time, but I had just assumed it would be busier after getting swallowed up by IMDB.

I think IMDB folks prefer to stay at IMDB.
Speaking of IMDB...IMDB has the worst boards I have ever witnessed in my life...

We're actually doing very well for a small individual run web site. You are saying it's a fact because you say it is? That's not how facts work! Back that up with some data. I'm actually curious what the day to day activity comparisons are these days. Not how many users are there, because lurking isn't activity. I'd like to know what the daily posting activity is like between the two. Quote: I do think you make very good points about the differences between KJ and BOM. Clearly they have a lot of backing (in money and "star power") and a much more active main site that can draw in newbies. It does just go to show what a sad state their forum is in if they can't capitalize off that more. They clearly are doing something wrong. Yeah, everytime they have rebuilt their member base, Sean has purged it! It's the healthiest that it's been since this place was created, though, and it's actually a nice place to post again. Not a lot of negativity and hate like I see here. If Sean would leave it be, I would imagine that it would be twice as active soon enough. Especially after the IMDB merger. Quote: I think you over emphasize the main site for a place like this. You can have an up to date main site, but unless you have the backing, dollars, and the big time cache, it isn't going to do jack shit. Standard reviews and news items... there are better sites for that. That strategy may have worked in 1999, but it just won't today. Yeah, I agree, in fact, I told loyal the same thing about his new venture. Quote: Lastly, the fact is we do draw new posters. Not all of us were here in 2004, and we have retained a shockingly high number of people from 2004/2005, despite some leaving. If anything, I see a shockingly low turnover rate, when compared to other internet sites. Well, in fairness, this place gets exiled BOM members, mostly, which is what all of us were, and many of the ones who joined later. Now there are other spinoff forums competing for those cast offs, so it's going to be even harder for KJ to get them to become regulars, and with the forum losing so many of it's active contributors, KJ has it's work cut out for it. It's less interesting here than it was. Loyal's funding also brought people to the forum, and that's no longer here. Members like dolce were big time responsible for building up certain parts of this board. That's gone, nobody took her place. Hell, I was hugely responsible in building the interest in the awards forum here. There are so many heavy contributors that quit contributing, and nobody stepped in to do as much when we stopped. Imagine if xia stopped contributing to box office here or Libs stopped contributing to the TV stuff or Korrgan stopped contributing to the box office games. That's the level of hits that this board has taken in other areas, and without anybody stepping up to the same contribution level, it only stands to reason that interest won't be there and will continue to fade.

If he wasn't harboring hard feelings, he would still be here, wouldn't he? And getting thanks isn't really the issue. Getting made out to be a piece of shit asshole for all my efforts by a mob of people was my problem. I didn't need to be thanked, but I could have lived without that nonsense. I'm sure anybody would feel the same way.

Thanked for what?
For being a good member?
That's what the Poster Awards are for.

I don't know of any members here from loyal's funding, or from anything like that. The reality is, that without an off the wall hook and some luck, you're not going to do anything that makes a place like this explode. And, honestly, "big" sites like BOM and IMDB don't really give a rats ass about their forum... it's not what drives them.
