Something tells me movie-goers are catching on to the new fad of subpar to downright awful horror movies. If Cursed is actually good, maybe about $20 million.

Cursed: $24.7 million -- Wes Craven, PG-13 and great advertising, it is bound to have a great opening
Man of the House: $11.5 million -- Might have some appeal but I wouldn't expect it to do much beyond a 2.0x multiplier
Diary of a Mad Black Woman: $11.5 million -- A commonly underestimated niche market, this will have appeal to the urban market and to woman. Should do fairly well and have decent legs.

The problem is, every time a horror movie comes out, the day before I always think "OK, if I predict a huge opening for this movie, it'll be the one that breaks the pattern and it'll bomb", so ever since the Grudge, I've underpredicted every single horror movie (except for Alone in the Dark).

I'll probably underpredict Cursed as well.

Cursed will be pretty big. It's got an actual horror look to it. It's from Wes Craven, it's PG-13, and the marketing has been strong.

I know a horror hit when I see it. I'm from "that group" that runs out to see stupid horror movies on Friday nights. :razz:

I don't get much information from teenagers regarding movies. My nephews and nieces are of the belief that watching movies affects your success in school (ASU), which is ridiculous. My wife's nieces and nephews are goofballs. They are more interested in fixing cars. In fact they call me for information.

You are my source of teenage interest in horror movies. I thought The Grudge would fail after watching it. You were correct.

My source is never my interest in a movie, but purely crowd responses to the trailers, and the "buzz" around my school. They tell me how high to predict. When people began to say "people are losing interest in these horror movies" when Boogeyman came out, I kept with my prediction, even if it was Superbowl weekend.

Horror movies since The Grudge have been so successful, one after the other, that it's surprising. I can't believe I'm STILL underpredicting them. I guess I'm expecting something to break the pattern soon...

Cursed will break that very pattern you talk about....

Put it this way, i thought CURSED was the sole opener this weekend. i have never heard of the other two movies, at all.

Ummm dont underestimate Man of the House... basically the entire state of Texas is a lock to see this film.... you just dont understand how big UT/A&M thing is out there, hook em horns :razz:

Not necessarily. If Cursed opens with under $20M (which I think will happen), Hitch would most likely stay on top.

I do hope Cursed will bomb to stop the trend of every freaking horror film reaching number 1. Probably unlikely since that Shitee film Boogeyman managed to open in the high teens. If this trend continues with horrors doing so well, we will see a PG-13 Leprechaun saved from straight to video hitting the movie theaters near you

I really don't want CURSED to bomb, because i like horror movies doing well.

But i think CURSED will dissapoint with about $16M. Anything over $20M would be fab.

Seriously, though. Cursed is going to be just another underpredicted horror movie. Let's see...

The Grudge was majorly underpredicted. All I saw were openings ranging from $20-25 million with a few exceptions. The Grudge opened close to $40 million.

Everyone expected Darkness to be an utter bomb and open with less than $4 million in 2 days. I believe it opened with $6 million and that considering it has been delayed for around 2 years and didn't have much of anything going for it.

White Noise...very underpredicted as well. Most predictions ranged from $12 million to $16 million with some daredevils going for $20 million (and BKB for $40 million, but that doesn't count because it's BKB). It opened to 24 million.

Hide & Seek was predicted pretty well actually, yet surprised many with another $20+ million openeing.

Then we had Boogeyman which many, including myself, thought would break the pattern. It had no stars, it was originally supposed to go DTV, the trailers didn't look too good and the reviews were anything, but encouraging. Yet it opened to $19 million on a Superbowl weekend. On a normal weekend, it'd have made $20+ million.

I won't even bring Constantine into this discussion because it has not been marketed as horror.


Cursed has the "From the creators of Scream" going for it and you have to realize how popular Scream is among young crowds. Just see at the opening weekends of Scream 2 and Scream 3, both above $30 million. It is also openeing in 3,000+ theatres. Why, I ask you, shall Cursed open with less than what Boogeyman opened with? What did Boogeyman have going for it that Cursed doesn't have?

Having said that, I am pretty certain that Cursed will make $20+ million on the opening weekend.

I have to agree with those who think Cursed will make less than $20 million. I might even go so far as to say that Hitch will be #1 again next weekend.

The last time Wes Craven's name was attached to something (They) it bombed, and not only does Cursed look like crap, but he's pretty much washed his hands of the movie because he wasn't happy with how it turned out when edited down for a PG-13. True horror fans will know this. Also, Scream 3 was five years ago...the young people who were into that are now five years older and not into the whole teen horror thing, a genre which was played out by the number of imitators. This looks like a return to that sort of horror rather than the more modern kind...which is generally remaking a classic or something very strange like the Japanese horror phenom. I love werewolves and I would love to see Craven get a third wind in his career (the second being Scream) but I just don't think this will be the movie to do it.

However, Horror movies is more popular than it were in 2002.

If White Noise can get $24 million opening, why CURSED can't?
