I think Cursed is going to end the streak of PG-13 horror films opening to over $20M. Call me crazy, but I don't sense a vibe for it. At least the ads for White Noise and Boogeyman were effective. I'd say a $15M opening is more likely, before falling off the face of the earth with about $35-40M total.

Dimension only paid $5 million to acquire the North American and multiple foreign territory distribution rights of DARKNESS, and it grossed $22 million in US.

Correct. That's more a profitable venture than an actual box office hit. $22M is nothing to crow about, really, even if it only cost $5M to acquire.

It's sad, but true. Boogeyman would have easily made $22+ million that weekend if it were a regular weekend. Cursed is being released on a regular weekend.

So.... Alexander is a bigger box office hit than Garden State?

Oh come on??? First of all, it's not opening this weekend, it's next weekend and Second, you don't think this movie will make more than 11 Million for the weekend??? BOOGEYMAN made what?? 19 Million for the weekend?? It to was PG-13.. I'd like to think this is going to be a little more popular than 11 Million for the weekend...

But yeah Boogeyman made $19M, but it seems like it had way more advertising, and didn't have the pre bashing that Cursed is suffering from, and now, no critics screenings.

Cursed will be praying for 3,000 screens now.

I rekon best case scenario is $18,000,000 opening. But i HOPE to god for more!

Boogeyman also hadn't critics screenings.

Marketing campaign is really strong. There are so many tv spots of "Cursed".

I think the budget was aroung $20 million. However the film had been released in Spain and other countries around two years ago. So I'm guessing that the $20 million all went to Dimension? They simply paid the $5 million acquisition fee and the P&A budget?

Normally, the original producers can also receive some % of US gross.

However, Miramax is a very special company, so .... I don't know.

(The original producers of "The crying game" received 0 % of US gross. The producer of "Hero" say that they can't make money from US release.

But the original producers of "In the Bedroom" receive many % of US gross. )

That is what I figured.

I know for example sometimes a studio will essentially hire a company to distribute a film. Example, 2004's The Passion of the Christ in which Mel Gibson's studio (forgot the name) paid NewMarket 11% of the theatrical gross for distribution. NewMarket handled the logistics of getting it into theaters then.

Other times, as with Darkness or Garden State, a studio purchases the film, and then a % goes back to the original producers as you said.

The case of "The Passion of the Christ" is special.

Newmarket didn't acquire it. NewMarket release this movie thought [rent-a-system], whuch means that Mel Gibson's studio is responsible for all print and advertising costs. NewMarket just provided distribution services to Mel Gibson's studio for a percentage distribution fee.

Warner also release Exorcist 0 thought [rent-a-system].

Anyway, take away the TIMMED TO GET PG13 and NO CRITICS SCREENINGS bit on the title, and make this a prediction thread for next weekend.

I think that [TIMMED TO GET PG13] will help this movie to do much better at opening weekend.

I predict at least $25 million opening weekend.... Maybe much higher....
