1. Not all animals are treated like that.
2. But this is a reality.
3. No food is safe... there is horror in the produce industry too about unclean, unsanitary food.
4. If you are concerned about this, research and buy meat which is produced in more ethical ways.
5. To the girl in the blog: Or don't eat meat at all, and become a back-seat vegan, where one occasionally posts on a messageboard or blog about their outrage at practices which are common knowledge by now without really doing anything proactive to fix the problem.
6. I watched, and now I crave some chicken McNuggets.

What exactly can a person do other than not buy meat or dairy products?
About the video...
I'm assuming it's PETA'S "Meet Your Meat" thing, and despite my feelings about PETA, the video itself is fairly accurate. I've been a vegan for close to eight years now, so this is all pretty old hat to me. Animal rights activists have actually made quite a bit of headway over the past several years, though. Conditions continue to improve every year. The best and most legal thing you can do is just not buy meat or dairy products. There's a saying about speaking with your wallet or something like that that applies here.

Do what John Robbins did. When Diet for a New America came out, meat consumption in the US dropped by 18%. He was responsible for much of it.
The problem with PETA, and many activists, is that they try to get people to give up meat altogether, and they're not very nice about it. Of course this backfires, and people get defensive and cling to meat even more. There is a saying that if you get 100 people to eat 1% less meat, it's the same as converting one person to vegetarianism. The activists should focus their efforts around this philosophy.

i've thought of giving up meat here and there. my problem is, i hate vegetables to save my life.
i've tried adding in a bit of veg in my diet .. sometimes a caesar salad will do .... yup .. thats progress for me. before i was completely meat ... anything i'd eat or order, i'd ask them to hold the veggies.
i grew up watching animaals get slaughtered at the local shops. i've seen how tehy use machines for this stuff as well .. used to get bothered but not anymore. its part of being a meat eater ... and there are more inhumane ways to get the meat.

I've been a semi-vegetarian (I still eat fish) since before most of you were born. I am for a few reasons:
1. Morality -- I don't like causing pain to any creature that can feel it, especially when I don't need to cause it ... (I'm a semi-hypocrite because I think that fish are low enough on the evolutionary scale that it doesn't matter as much)
2. Protest -- By not buying or eating meat, I am boycotting places that mistreat the animals this poorly. They're not getting any of my money if I can help it.
3. Health -- Almost every doctor will tell you that cutting meat out of your diet as much as possible is healthier for you. Our bodies are closer to primarily vegetarian animals and can't digest meat as well.

Mike. What are you feelings on the fact that even if they ARE low enough in the evolutionary scale, they still feel pain and in some ways, suffer more. After catching them, most usually have to first suffocate (is that the right word here?) to death. Plus even if they are lower, some fish are must smarter than other fish. Does that make a difference?

So I should write a book? Not everyone can write a book. Wouldn't it be much easier and more plausible to just make the conscious effort to not buy meat or dairy products and tell those around you why you chose to do so?
I agree with you about PETA, though.

It is said, that both hawks and men eat rabbits. In an area where a hawk settles, the population of rabbits goes down. In an area where a human settles, the population of rabbits goes up.
Just something to think about.

What about the poor vegetables? Can a potato uproot itself and try to get away? No. Can a head of lettuce or a mushroom bite the farmer who tries to harvest it? No.
Everyday vegetables are stripped of their leaves, have their roots dismembered, and are separated and graded, like ... well, like tomatoes.
How many carrots have their lives ended prematurely just so you can have those "baby" carrots you like snacking on so much?
Save the defenseless garden vegetables. Just because they don't have eyes (except the potatoes, of course) to shed tears or mouths to cry out, they have feelings, too!
No meat, no vegetables. We should all just stop eating all together! We will survive without food. We can live on "feeling good" about ourselves.

Protesting does nothing for vegetarians. No matter how hard you try, there will NEVER be a time where people stop eating meat because they don't want the innocent animals hurt. Just because a small portion of the population stops eating meat doesn't mean that there will ever be a difference. This is somewhat similiar to that time when people tried to get everyone to stop buying gas for one day, just because of gas prices, when the sheer idea is ludicrous. It's not going to affect anything.
NOW, with that said, while I myself have NEVER thought about being a vegetarian, I do respect those who do it to feel better about themselves that they are not consuming innocent animals like that. To me, I realize it will never change anything, so I go on eating meat. But, I also never feel good about myself, so you'll see where I'm an idiot.
Oh, and NCAR made up points that I was going to mention. What about the poor, defenseless veggies?! At least animals have SOME chance of fighting back. Plants got nothin'.

I know I cant make a difference, are even hurt those awful companies that treat their animals like that...
But I feel morally responsible to give up meat....
Whether or not those companies are affected by descisions like this, I dont know, but I do know I'll feel better and healthier knowing that I may have saved a poor little chickens life.

If you're gonna go vegetarian, be smart about it.
Meat is a very important part of our diet, and if you're giving it up, better consult books and/or nutritionists on how to eat properly. Otherwise you might cause some severe problems for yourself.

Well, that's the part I'll at least agree with. As long as you feel better (I'm all for feeling better), that's all that matters.

You can't have health, if there's no wealth ;-)
Case in point - most of Africa.

I'm thinking of giving up meat for lent, but I'm not sure. I'm already giving up pop, which I drink way to much of, so it couldn't hurt to. I don't have a problem eating it, but I don't want to know where it came from, if that makes sense. I'll probably end up not giving it up (except for Friday's) because I like it too much. Some things I can go without, but I can't see myself not having a hot dog, hamburger or sausage for 40 days.

I eat meat, but I do agree that some of the conditions in which animals are treated is wrong. Supposedly it has gotten better.
@Mike- Yes you are being a hypocrite...practice what you preach brotha
So since using animals is so wrong...does your wife use make up mike? For that matter should all women stop using lip stick/ Because there is animal fat in almost all lip sticks....should we stop drinking milk? Eatings eggs? Do you have leather shoes? Clothes? Car Interior? Do you use products that are tested on animals? Do you use some type of spray to kill roaches? Mouse Traps? Fly Swatters?...etc?

Nope without meat I would just go on as a 5'4 man instead of being 5'10 by eating meat  Hmmm tofu, soybeans, peanuts :kriz: . God help me I need meat, well fish mainly
By the way, weird ass site by PETA putting out a site against Petco named Petno, I think they list every hazard that Petco does to each pet although Petco adopts hundreds of neglected pet

I realize this is a joke (or hope it is, rather) but vegetables can't feel pain. They don't have a central nervous system.

Yep. I'm not a very strict-practicing one, but I do try to go to church when I can, and I take part in lent. I'm going to church tonight, as a matter of fact.
