Quantum of Solace
Quantum of SolaceQuote: Quantum of Solace (2008) is the 22nd James Bond film, produced by EON Productions for MGM and Columbia Pictures, and is the direct sequel to the 2006 film Casino Royale. Directed by Marc Forster, it features Daniel Craig's second performance as James Bond. In the film, Bond battles wealthy businessman Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a member of the Quantum organisation, posing as an environmentalist who intends to stage a coup d'état in Bolivia to seize control of the nation's water supply. Bond seeks revenge for the death of his lover, Vesper Lynd (Eva Green), and is assisted by Camille Montes (Olga Kurylenko), who is also seeking revenge.
Producer Michael G. Wilson developed the film's plot while Casino Royale was being shot. Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, Paul Haggis, and Joshua Zetumer contributed to the script. The title was chosen from a 1960 short story in Ian Fleming's For Your Eyes Only, though the film does not contain any elements of the original story. Location filming took place in Mexico, Panama, Chile, Italy, Austria, and Wales while interior sets were built and filmed at Pinewood Studios. Forster aimed to make a modern film that also featured classic cinema motifs: a vintage Douglas DC-3 was used for a flight sequence, and Dennis Gassner's set designs are reminiscent of Ken Adam's work on several early Bond films. Taking a course away from the usual Bond villains, Forster rejected any grotesque appearance for the character Dominic Greene to emphasise the hidden and secret nature of the film's contemporary villains.
The film premiered at the Odeon Leicester Square on 29 October 2008, gathering mixed reviews which mainly praised Craig's gritty performance and the film's action sequences while feeling that Quantum of Solace was not as impressive as the predecessor Casino Royale. It is also the second highest grossing James Bond film, without adjusting for inflation, making $586,090,727 worldwide, while becoming one of the highest grossing Bond films in the United States.

What a horrible let down. The action is generic the story makes me want to kill squirrel's and the whole assembly is like Casino Royale except hit with a crapification ray.
Much sadness

I can't even get myself mildly excited for this. It's not James Bond anymore, it's action guy.

I thought I read somewhere where the Producers of the new BOND series planned on cutting out all the sexual innuendos, the Martini drinking and doing away with "Q" like the Classic BOND movies had?? I mean, this is and was what BOND was all about and now it's like there getting all Politically correct about it in 2008??

Re: Quantum of Solace
I've let it mull a few days and maybe I was to harsh. I mean its an adequate action movie but its a step down from Royale and the editing is completely ham fisted.

8/10 -> B
It's no Casino Royale. But it's a good action movie. I'm afraid I can't call it much of a Bond movie. CR didn't have much of the "essential" Bond stuff, but it still worked and felt like a Bond movie. QoS losses the magic somewhere, but still it's a good movie for itself.
Daniel Craig is still great as Bond, but this time he hasn't been given much to work with.

It's a decent movie, but the set-up with Casino Royale was just too good and this one only partly delivered.

Re: Quantum of Solace
I have to watch Casino Royale again to see what is it that is lacked here. But definitely, a BIG step down from Casino Royale (and I'm one of those who loved how Bond is not being the old Bond).
The action sequences were solid all around. By 'solid', I mean it was bad-edited, loosen-focused but was saved by the amount of intensity. There are lots of action to expect here. I'd even say QoS was a non-stop action flick. I was like; "oh for God's sake, take a break!". But instead of exciting me, the feeling I had was more of the frustration. And even there were tons of action sequences and they were all solid but none, repeat, NONE of them was impressive. They are all generic, too generic to become memorable. Marc Forster is no different from Michael Bay when it comes to the action scene (may be even worse). Bangs and booms, car burn-up, building crash-down.. all those thing don't make the exciting action sequence, you need more.
And Craig.. God! why didn't everything go right like the last time. In CS he turned the old lame James Bond to Jason Bourne, and me likes that. But this time, he went to become 'some Arnold'. Is it because of the story? That being betrayed by the love of your life simply makes you a robot? I mean, seriously?

(just because I already gave Wanted C+)

Re: Quantum of Solace
For those who loved Casino Royale and looking forward to this one.
I'd say that you should realize that Casino Royale was really great, and to top such the greatness is not easy. Don't put your expectation so high and you'll have a good time. At least, the intense action sequence still can be found here. Not as good as CS (remember how awesome 'the parkour chase sequence' was? unfortunately, such the awesomenesss is gone), but as mentioned, still solid nevertheless.

In other words, expect the quality to be along the lines of most of the other Bond films. I'm fine with that. I really can't wait to see how the last scene came out though. Fucking eight days.

Re: Quantum of Solace
The Bourne series is overrated so we dont need Bond going down that path.
I think the Bond we got in CR was the right Bond for the film and I dont see the Bourne resemblance really. What im hoping to see with the next couple of Bonds is that we get a Bond in between the CR one and the old Bond films. Or atleast one in transition. Same quality pic as CR but add in a couple more gadgets and many more beautiful women.
This one looks to dissapoint on many fronts. My expectations going in are extremely low.
