Trillian is free. I use it for one of my AIM accounts and ICQ (I have tow AIM accounts and I refuse to download ICQ....it's that bad. I just use it because it's there). They just released version 3, and it is more sleek and easier than it has been in the past.
I don't use GAIM. I'm too lazy to go download it and set it up. I think it is better than Trillian though.
As for the normal ones:
ICQ is awful. Bloody awful. If you've used it, you know why.
Yahoo! is average. I don't use it enough, I guess. IT really takes a back seat to the other two.
AIM is actually a pretty bad program IMO, but I like it more than Y! because mroe people use it. Because half of the country uses AOL. Because they are stupid.
MSN is the best. It's more sleek. It's easier to use. It has a large installed userbase. It's easiest to use.
IRC beats them all, even though it's really only used by itnernet junkies  _________________

It depends on which program you use to connect with IRC. BitchX is regarded by many as the best, but fairly hard to use. mIRC is the easiest and most customizable to use for me, though.

I would have to pick AIM. It's so simple, and runs very smoothly on my computer. Yahoo is also very good, but sometimes can be annoying, same with MSN. Most of my friends are on AIM too, so that definitely influences my vote.

Ive got maybe 30 people on my AIM list, on MSN ive got 123, so yeah i use it more.
Plus everyone from my school and college has MSN. Its file transfer sucks, but it feels more neutral than AIM.

YIM is the best. It has the best smilies and the IMVironments are cool. I use AIM the most though because most people i know use it.
