Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Game Starts This Week!
Thanks guys.
Thanks to Xiayun, the next week is up, and you can start predicting! Your predictions will be stored, and will count forever and ever!
It should be noted, the game is still far from finished, and increased functionality will be added over the coming days, weeks, and months. But, for now, it works, and we might as well start, because the functionality I want to add won't mess with anything done now.
So predict away and good luck!!
Also: Don't worry if your My Results page shows results. I will wipe all those out so you will be starting with a fresh slate, starting this week!!

Is there an easier way to find the game on the site? Shouldn't it be like...front page right now?

There will be.
It will be added to the menu, etc etc. But as of now, the game is still in Beta testing, it's functional, but will still have issues.
I plan to add it to the main site, and advertise it etc the first week of February, until then, consider this a trial run that actually counts.

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Game Starts This Week!
I've updated the main landing page of the game. This will be the page that everything links to .. the Menu link will go here, etc etc. http://www.worldofkj.com/bonanza.phpIt has the previous week's top 10, and the previous weeks average predictions. If you are logged in, and made the top ten, you will be highlighted in yellow. If Xiayun made the top 10, he will be highlighted in blue, since he is the site's predictor. This page is not automated yet, but this will be similar to what it looks like.

Yea, as I said, I haven't automated the above page yet. It looks like it will, but it's not working yet, I still have to code it. That will probably come tomorrow or Monday.
In time, your name will be in yellow.

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Game Starts This Week!
http://www.worldofkj.com/bonanza.phpThe above page is now 2/3 automated. The only section not automated is the 'average' prediction section. I might take a look at that tonight, otherwise later in the week.

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Game Starts This Week!
Guys,
When I calculate the monthly wins, and all that jazz, what should I used to decide if a weekend is in a certain month. For example, if a weekend straddels two months, how do I decide which month it falls in?
Weekend start date? Weekend end date? Prediction deadline date?

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Question on Pg. 3
I'd go with whichever month has more days of that weekend. So, for example, if friday is in January, saturday and sunday in february, weekend would be in february. Friday and saturday in January, sunday in february, weekend is in january.
Btw, what will the all-time chart look like? I mean, what if someone skips some weeks, or stops predicting at all? Not sure now, but think BOM had people in database, but they wouldn't show up in actual charts if they missed 5 (?) games in a row, and when they do come back playing, they'd show up after next game. Think something similar we should have.

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Question on Pg. 3
As of now, I haven't decided, but I think for a yearly chart, each week has to count. Thus if someone misses a week, they should get a 0.

Since most people will have holidays, how about you can drop your 3 (or whatever) worst weekends for the yearly chart. That way it wouldn't hurt if you miss a weekend if you don't have net access.

At the same time, I really think the yearly chart should reflect the top predictor over a 52 week course, I don't think you should be able to 'drop' low scores.

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Question on Pg. 3
I think something similar to BOM is fine. The all-time chart is ranked by averages by default, while the yearly chart is ranked by total points, and then provide the ability to rank any charts by averages or total points if user chooses to.
For simplicity reason, I think we could just go with the starting date for determining which month a weekend belongs to.

With regards to the charts, I think we are going to have to give users a 0 for weeks missed, just because when I implement the tourney style tournament next year, people will be entered in it based on highest 64 average % scores over the year. I just don't think it's fair to let people drop low weeks.

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Question on Pg. 3
Yeah, but not everyone plays 52 weeks or wants a final spot at the end of the year for the tourney, but don't want to see their average drop big time just because they can't always play. Laaaaame.

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Question on Pg. 3
Well, then I can compute an average in 'games played' and an average for the whole year. The yearly chart will be all 52 weeks, but maybe it can also show things like '# of weeks missed' and 'average in weeks played'.

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Question on Pg. 3
BOM manages to factor in games played in their monthly/yearly ranking...for example in yearly rank...
Player A has 85% , and has played all 52 games, and is ranked 5th Player B has 86% for the games played, but has only played 45 games, so he is ranked lower...it's some math they've devised (I don't understand it, but I'm guessing someone does)
The average stays the same, yearly rank is different...That way all-time rank doesn't get screwed because someone hasn't played every single game (all-time rank has a minimum amount of games that have to be played, and then just takes everyone's average) Not trying to be an ass, just food for thought

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Question on Pg. 3
BOM does it by points.
They are calculated like this:
1. Debbie Does Dallas...yet again 85.13% = 85 points 2. Hancock 40.5% = 41 points 3. and so on and on
Basically, the same as overall percentage, but only if we predicted 10 movies. For more or less, it is different.
EDIT: This is only for yearly and monthly ranks, overall accuracy (percentage) still is the main thing for overall rank.

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Question on Pg. 3
Exactly, BOM does compute it by average in a roundabout way, they just mask it behind 'points'. In reality, those points are the same as the sum of all your scores.
Thus BOM does pretty much give users a 0 for weeks they don't predict, it's just that the change doesn't get reflected on their prediction percentage. Which I suppose it shouldn't.

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Question on Pg. 3
http://www.worldofkj.com/bonanza.phpThe above page is now fully working. It shows the past week's top 25, the average prediction for each movie, and the actual grosses. The page will switch to the next week as soon as actuals are added into our database. Pages that still need finished: Hall of Fame Results How to Play The Hall of Fame will show things like ... who has the most top 10's, who has the most monthly wins, etc. So for now, this section will stay empty because there really aren't enough values to pull. The How to play section will be done next, since no one volunteered, guess I'll be writing it. The results page will contain all the yearly, monthly, weekly charts, etc. Obviously we have been having some discussions in this thread on how to do various things within these charts, s I need to work all that out before displaying them.

Re: WoKJ: Box Office Game Beta - Question on Pg. 3
Would be good if you make another thread with big fat "BOX OFFICE BONANZA NOW OPEN!" title which we'll global announce. It is pretty big thing I'd say, moreso than those dvd giveaways. EDIT: Deadline? 4:01 AM...what timezone?
