I went to see Phantom of the Opera tonight. It had been playing here for three weeks so it was in the smallest theatre (150-200 people) and it was probably about 75% full. I was amazed by the line for In Good Company which was playing in the second largest theatre (300-400) and had a huge line for both the 7PM and 9:30 shows. If that has the same sort of business across the board (and remember that it has been playing in NYC for two weeks) then it's going to do well over $10 million this weekend. (Hurray for Dennis Quaid!)

As I left, there were sold out shows for Elektra (only one print in one of the smaller theatres for some reason), Sideways, Closer and Million Dollar Baby, all in smaller theatres...the place was packed though and I expect a really good Friday across the board. We'll see what holds up for the weekend.

Re: NGDCO $4-5 million seems really high even with a couple sold out shows in every theatre. You have to figure that at least some of the theatres won't get nearly as much business as the busy multiplexes that Libs (and I) frequent.

And as far as it not showing up on the Yahoo Buzzmeter...actually, it did. It showed up on the right hand side at #5 in the "Movers" which signifies a lot of recent interest. (Um...below "Blue Crush" and "The Wedding Singer"...ookay) If the movie does well, then it may be partially due to Dennis Quaid and Topher Grace's television appearances everywhere from The View to the Daily Show...they really managed to sell this movie, which is really only slightly better than Alfie or Shall We Dance.

and F Me...but it may end up being Universal's third straight hit in a row after Meet the Fockers and White Noise and they certainly seem to be getting a head start to a very good year. (Now they just have to have similar success with the Wedding Date)

:ANGRY MODE ON: yes they are over $10, PISSES BJ OFF!!!! :evil: but thas only at the good theater, the bad theaters that totaly such cost $8-$9 :evil: its the biggest ripoff ever :evil: and the discount theater is now up to $4 or $5 my god what a ripoff :evil: Matinees cost beteen $5-$8 depending on the theater quality its a waist of money this year and there planning to bump it up to $15 so Im only going to films I realy want to see which will probably be around 20-30, thats beteen $200 and $300 awg waht a waste of money. :ANGRY MODE OFF:

Coach Carter is selling out like crazy at my local theatre. Elektra and Racing Stripes are doing pretty well as well. Friday's #'s are going to be interesting...

Oh dont whine about paying $10 man, Thats a low price here!!!! You can expect to pay between $10 and $20 a showing depending on what theater you go to in the UK.

stop whining, Im 16 and Im able to remember when the ticket price was $2 $2 we are over charged and you are definately over charged :evil: IMO we should have never had to pay over $5 to watch a film ever

(Not to impressive here).

not as ROBUST as I was expecting :???: still good though :wink: Im somewhat suprised it seems the only film that did good at your theater was CC, yet at the theater that Animosity Reigns showed us the showings for Elekra CC and IGC were doing great :???: Seems that RS is sucking it up everywhere though lol.

All films are going to be interesting on Day 1, But i dont think any are in danger of terribly underperforming.

I saw Hotel Rwanda today in a 400 seater, and it was Sold Out. I missed all the previews. It was around 7:00pm and the theater was extremely busy, with Elektra and Coach Carter selling out left and right. I couldn't see Elektra there like I had originally planned. It didn't matter. The movie was absolutely fantastic. It's everything I had expected and hoped for times two. The acting was phenominal. Everything about it was just soo... amazing. I'll be more detailed about it in my full review for the site, but it's definently earned an A+ from me, and it sits in my top 5 of 2004.

But, I just had to see Elektra tonight, so...

Movie
It was good. Highly entertaining, action-packed. Well, not as much as I had hoped for. I was a bit dissapointed. I thought there would be a lot more fight scenes judging from the trailer, but what they had in there was already amazing enough. Beautiful fight scenes. The story was pretty weak, and the ending wasn't all that exciting, but the fight scenes and Jennifer Garner made up for the rest. I still enjoyed it a lot, but it's a step down from Daredevil. B

They are ripping you guys off. In Kansas City area and Peoria (since 7/04) even the best theaters cost only 8-8.50 Matinees are 5-6 bucks.

Well it looks like the reports are going with what I was anticipating, Elektra dissapointing slightly and Carter doing fantastic buisness. I'd guess a 7 and an 11 million opening day for them right now (guess which is which ). Anyways, I was going to see Coach Carter, but the shows were all sold out for the night by 8, even the 10:20. That's absolutely HUGE, the last time something like that happened was... well, a long time ago. So I ended up FINALLY seeing Sideways. It was a close call though, the guy was checking ID, but thank god my friend looks similar to me, all I had to do was put on his glasses and he used a second ID and we both made it fine! Anyway, it was completely sold out at the 8:10 showing in about a 200-ish seater.

Trailers were:
Bad Education (Wish this wasn't NC-17 :-/... not a great trailer though honestly)
"Cute" German Comedy (Schweitzenfuhrer Gets the Blues?)
Winter Passing (Looks terrific, god damn I love Focus Features)
The Sea Inside (Pity it got panned, I thought it didn't look half bad. The fact that the director was the one who gave Nicole Kidman one of her few performances I didn't feel was over-rated only helps.)

As for the movie, I loved it. Thankfully I prepared myself to be somewhat let down from all the lavish praise as I didn't think it looked that amazing. I don't know if I'd say it's the year's best movie, I'd rank it at #7 on my favorites of the year, behind Eternal Sunshine, Before Sunset, Spider-Man 2, Garden State, The Motorcycle Diaries, and Man on Fire (really debating to move this ahead of that, I want to let it sink in though first). Thomas Haden Church and Virginia Madsen were both terrific, I won't mind at all when they win there Oscars (and I bet they do). Sandra Oh did well for a part that really wasn't that huge, but Paul Giamatti... well, maybe it was the fact that he was playing the same character I've seen from him so much before, but he didn't blow my mind. He was good, yes, maybe even very good, but I felt that Church and Madsen both left him in the dust. The thing that surprised me about the movie the most though had to be how hard I was laughing at times. The comedy did get pretty damn raunchy (The wallet scene had me literally laughing out loud, something only three other movies in 2004 did for me), but I don't think it hurt the movie. The ending was really great with just that tiny hint of hope (though the first thing that happened when the screen went black was someone loudly sighing "Oh c'mon!"), though the one thing that bothered me was that someone like Mia (Mya?) could fall for a schlub like Miles. Maybe she could see beyond his negativity and cynicism, but it was the only thing I didn't buy, and honestly I wasn't a big fan of that pseudo-message about how even the most self hating loser can find a good woman. It's probably trivializing it and I really did love the movie, that just bothered me a tad. Overall, with such great performances, I'd rate Sideways as a borderline A/A-, leaning toward that A.

In the UK we dont get things cheaper by destroying small countries and taking all their resources. So we have to pay for them instead
