"From NEW YORK, It's the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon"
Quote:
"The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon."
Let the words roll around in your head. Think about them. Absorb them. Rue them . . . or cheer them. But sooner or later, you're going to have to deal with them: Jimmy Fallon, 38, will be the sixth host of television's most famous program.
Of course, which day he takes over has suddenly become a pressing matter. The Hollywood Reporter -- not in the business of parading unfounded gossip or innuendo -- over the weekend categorically said NBC would announce in May that the 2013-14 season will be Jay Leno's last, while Fallon will be named his successor; NBC just as quickly issued a categorical denial.
So noted. But in television, one is advised to always follow the money, and money (in television) always follows youth. Fallon's "Late Night" is both hot AND cool -- he's creatively allied with one of pop music's biggest stars, Justin Timberlake, while his house band, The Roots, may well be the best group anywhere on TV.
But this eventual succession is probably more about another Jimmy, who moved to 11:35 p.m. -- Leno territory -- in January. When Matt Damon staged a "takeover" of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Jan. 24, it clobbered "Tonight" and "Late Show with David Letterman," especially among younger viewers. It now ties or edges out "Tonight."
And so here is the fundamental math to remember: Leno, who turns 63 next month, hosts a "Tonight" whose audience isn't getting any younger or any bigger; Jimmy Kimmel's is. How do you fight fire? With fire. Fallon will be the next "Tonight" host: It's just a question of when.
"Late Night With" hosts are 0 for 2 in taking/keeping The Tonight Show reins, after either doing so or being heavily rumored to do so. And Leno was involved both times, so... should be interesting.

I kind of don't want Jimmy Fallon to hop shows because his current show is perfect as it is.
I'm not sure when it happened exactly, but Late Night with Jimmy Fallon has probably become the best late night talk show. It's awesome. He has expertly nailed the right combination of the cool factor and an appealing format. Like, what other show is gonna have all the celebrity guests playing beer pong and charades? Love it.

Jimmy Fallon is awesome and I will not hear arguments to the contrary!

I found Fallon obnoxious on SNL, but like him as a late-night host. Kimmel is much funnier, but he's not as versatile day-to-day. He's too snarky. A Kimmel/Kardashian interview, for example, would just be uncomfortable.
Honestly, Colbert and Stewart would rule network late-night if they could. Imagine a 1.5-hour, joint show that runs M-F consistently? With the Roots? Would we be talking about Fallon, Kimmel, or...Leno (ew)?

Hmmph. Would the Roots do LA? I can't imagine that. If there's no Roots, count me out of the Jimmy Fallon-for-Tonight bandwagon.
Oh, wait. We're talking about Jay Leno's replacement. My bad.
I don't totally get why location matters, btdubbs.
B. Jimmy Fallon sucks. His show is based on gimmicks and skits. His delivery of jokes is horrible and he continually sucks with most of his guests. He's always too excited and too in awe of most guests.
C. Anyone who doesn't think Craig Ferguson is the king of late night TV is a moron.
Yep.

Jimmy Fallon and Craig Ferguson are the only late night shows worth watching. And Kimmel maybe once in a while.

Conan is still hilarious, and he is the king of late night. I also highly enjoy Fallon and Ferguson.

Conan has his moments but he's mostly dull since his move.
Howard Stern is supposed to be the replacement for Fallon. I wouldn't mind that though I'd still watch Ferguson over him.
So you want to turn the show into the fart show polluted by porn star guests and circus freaks every week?

List
1. Ferguson 2. Fallon 3. Kimmel
Still prefer 90s (or pre-2000) Letterman to all the above, though Ferguson is damn good.
Fallon to replace Leno as the host of The Tonight Show by the fall of 2014 at the latest. NBC is building a brand new state-of-the-art studio within 30 Rock for Fallon. It's the first time The Tonight Show will be broadcast permanently in New York since 1972.
If only Conan had held on for five more years at Late Night... Hindsight is 20/20 though. Poor bastard.
On the bright side, The Tonight Show has a chance to actually be somewhat funny again since 2009.
Re: "From NEW YORK, It's the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon"
If that happens, I wonder how long Letterman will hang on. I figure he is still on because he wants to last longer than Leno. This whole affair is also funny since Leno's people basically pushed Carson into retirement.

Ferguson would probably take Late Show, unless CBS can steal Conan or John Stewart. Arseno Hall is coming back on Syndication. Not sure if he will be a hit now though.

I don't know if I would want Ferguson to take the Late Show just because he would have to be edited down a good bit and he would probably lose Geoff/Secretariat with a move to an earlier time.
Honestly, if Comedy Central is giving John Oliver temporary hosting duties of The Daily Show this summer and he does alright, maybe Jon could easily move to CBS.

Seth Meyers is currently rumored to be Fallon's replacement
Re: "From NEW YORK, It's the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon"
Seth Meyers is okay, but Late Night has typically went for and got a younger audience with edgier humor. I don't see Seth as young or edgy.
If Community is cancelled, Joel McHale would be a great choice.
I also heard that Leno isn't going quietly, making a few Conan-esque jabs at NBC in his monologue. Leno doesn't remind me of that type that takes jabs like that with good humor.

Late Night should go to Demetri Martin.
