 Re: TRL done
Wow.
The nostalgic part of me finds this sad. I still remember watching TRL in the summer of 1998 and hoping every day someone would finally knock Brandy & Monica's "The Boy Is Mine" out of the top spot. Heh.

 Re: TRL done
I still remember when the show was only Carson Daly introducing the Top 5 in some clautrophobic basement or bunker, flanked by TV monitors lol

 Re: TRL done
So I guess MTV is officially done showing music videos. So much for Music Television.

Didn't TRL start in the summer when they broadcast from some little beach house? Anyone remember Ananda Lewis? Used to know here when I worked at a MailBoxes Etc. in high school. She had a PO Box there. She was kind of a bitch.

 Re: TRL done
Not sure this is a good idea for them, to be MTV they should have some resemblance, even if it's incredibly small, of a music video station.

Music videos are, really, becoming a thing of the past. If they're not already.

I mean, on one hand, I did hate the fact that many songs really only became popular because of their music video, but at the same time....I loved watching music videos. Even though we still have YouTube, I just find myself not watching music videos anymore. Same here. I think what happened to MTV over the past years is actually pretty sad.

 Re: TRL done
I love music videos. I watch them daily and they sometimes improve a song for me. I don't think they're becoming a thing of the past at all, but they certainly arent events like they once were, i.e "Thriller".

 Re: TRL done
So there will obviously be a Best Top 10 of the past ten years. It's going to be a heated batlle for #1 (probably between Britney, Backstreet, NSYNC, and Mariah). Who will get it? I think Backstreet will because they had the most days at #1 total (with Shape of My Heart doing 61/65 at #1).

 Re: TRL done
Can't say I'm surprised. Actually, I'm surprised this didn't get the axe sooner.
I was never a big TRL watcher, but I did watch a little bit right before Daly left. After he left the show (like the rest of the network) TRL kind of felt irrelevant, which is pathetic since he is afterall Carson Daly.

 Re: TRL done
Carson Daly leaving wasn't the downfall of MTV. The downfall of MTV was the introduction of The Real World/Road Rules Challenges. They brought a whole new level of dumb to the network, even though some of the original challenge seasons were fun.

 Re: TRL done
They should play Video Killed the Radio Star, but they won't because MTV obviously isn't going to adknowledge this is pretty much the end for them and videos.
Internet killed the video star

 Re: TRL done
i don't think music videos are becoming a thing of the past. it's just much more difficult to compete with a group of people who are now seeking the internet for that kind of thing.

The Dark Knight wrote: I think Sean Combs and the Notorious B.I.G killed music videos.
Music videos used to be about something beyond the spectacle of spending millions of dollars for minutes worth of storytelling. They those two assclowns came along and went money crazy, changing and subsequently killing the artform. Hah, yeah like the Mo Money Mo Problems and Hypnotize videos. Total dick cheese. Music videos are not becoming a thing of the past. The traditional method most of us grew up watching them on is history, but the music video as a marketing tool will always be vital to an artist/record company.

Magnus wrote: I really don't think so. Music videos are still relevant sure, but they're dying. They no longer have as much importance as they used to. Yeah but name the last artist with an even slightly popular single that didn't have a video to accompany it? Shit even Britney managed videos for her 3 singles even though she was out oh her mind.

 Re: TRL done
I think they're a thing of the past in terms of relevancy. 10 years ago, music videos meant a lot. Nowadays, you can churn out a piece of shit music video and it won't harm the single in any way. Music videos will always have their place and will be around forev, but they're not one tenth as relevant as they used to be.
