I think they actually will give it to Doris Roberts.
IF they don't give it to Boyle, then I don't know I'll lose it. I'm not even a loyal fan of the show and don't care if it wins only 1 award, but that 1 award better be Boyle's. I don't know how he's gone so long without one. I think he is actually the funniest actor on the show.
If they give it to Ray Romano, I will SNAPPPP!!!!! I think he is one of the unfunniest actors in the history of television. It's really irnoic that he's the writer or co-writer of the show and yet, it is his character that is the most unbelievable and the one based least on reality. There are of course many of his features in most modern day husbands and fathers; but there is not one man as stupid, ignorant, and completely idiotic as him. I hope Zach Braff wins because he deserves something for all his hard work over the past years.
And I also think that list, while very believable, is all bulshit because the show is more than a month away and the voting period has probably not ended yet, or maybe just finished this weekend.

Best Actor in a Drama
James Spader, Boston Legal
Ian McShane, Deadwood
Hugh Laurie, House
Hank Azaria, Huff
Kiefer Sutherland, 24
Who should win: Again, keeping in mind that I don't watch Deadwood or House and haven't watched 24 since season two (though I did always think Kiefer Sutherland was great in his role), for me it's between James Spader and Hank Azaria. Boston Legal is a good show, and James Spader is still awesome. The only problem I'd have giving him the win, though, is that the final season of The Practice (the one who one for) was so good that Boston Legal, holistically, pales in comparison to the genius of the former show's final season. Spader transformed The Practice, and it's a shame it went off the air because with him on it, it was actually much better than BL. That leaves Hank Azaria. Unlike the proverbial quirky/nutjob psychiatrist we commonly see on TV, Azaria is much more subdued and subtle, which has become commonplace for a lot of his roles. They're almost even, but I'm giving the edge to Hank Azaria. He's the highlight of the show, even with a great supporting cast.
Who will win: Hard one. I do have a hard time believing the Academy will go with Spader again, but I still think he's got a great shot, as does Lauire (lots of buzz), McShane (just off a Golden Globe win), and Sutherland (buzz and the never won before factor). I think Hank Azaria is out of the running, unfortunately, as his show may have enough buzz to propel a supporting cast member to a win but not a lead. Between those four, I have no idea, but the folks at GoldDerby seem to be saying Spader, so that works for me. James Spader.

Guys, I'm sure Ryan was just being glib with his 'unnamed sources' list.

It seems like they have honored a select few shows. I don't think it's really all that respectable giving the award for the same damn show 4 or 5 years in a row, I mean come on! Even if it was technically the best, giving it to a new, more ambitious program might have been better. I had no idea Helen Hunt was huge with MAd About You!! I am stunned, absoulutely stunned to see Jphn Lithgow up there 3 times!!!!! I had no idea the show was a critical darling or that he was. I always loved watching it but usually reruns... I only caught the last season as it actually came on! It is so soothing, you really don't know how soothing, to see Sela Ward up there for Once and Again. It just makes my day anyday and she's won twice! Yeah, I didn't even know she won for Once and Again, let alone another time before that. Oh, and did you guys know Sela Ward was offered Teri Hatcher's role on DH? I read that in USA Today a couple weeks ago.
Well, I did know that Ward had won for Once and Again... but looking back, it's pretty shocking. It was its first season. The show must have had enormous buzz for her to pull it off. I think I had heard someone once say she had one another emmy and remembered once I saw on the list again.
As for the Desperate Housewives thing... I had no idea she was offered the role. Actually, maybe I vaguely remember reading about it somehwere, but it could be my mind playing tricks on me after seeing you post it. Although obviously she would have been amazing, I think it's safe to say the show would have a bit of a different tone. I don't think Sela would be so clumsy and so "teri hatchery"-y. I think it all worked out for the best though... I know Sela wasn't interested in starring in another series and I hope sh'es happy doing whatever she's working on as well as her stint on House. I LOVE YOU SELA!!!

I think Ray Romano is gonna win. He submitted a killer tape, "The Power of No," plus the fact that it's the last season of ELR. Even if you dont like Romano, and I'll admit he's my least favorite on the show, he was damn good in that episode.

Haha I'm on the Ray Romano is by far the weakest part of the show bandwagon. And the reason I don't care much for the show to begin with.
Zach Braff should win.Even Jason Bateman. Maybe they're too young though??

I dont think West Wing has enough support to win. Although Lost is not the "academy" thing to do, I think its popularity and critical support will lead it to win in its first season.

And didn't West Wing only had 5 nominations overall? Eww. If I was an Academy member, I'd see which shows had across-the-board support (Lost, 24, Deadwood all have more than 10 nominations) rather than going with the safe, boring choice.

I lost all interest, and gained some hatred, in the emmys years ago and my hatred of the ceremony is only enforced every year when things like this happen:
Best Actress, Drama
2004: Allison Janney, The West Wing
2003: Edie Falco, The Sopranos
2002: Allison Janney, The West Wing
2001: Edie Falco, The Sopranos
2000: Sela Ward, Once & Again
1999: Edie Falco, The Sopranos
Best Actress, Comedy
2001: Patricia Heaton, Everybody Loves Raymond
2000: Patricia Heaton, Everybody Loves Raymond
1999: Helen Hunt, Mad About You
1998: Helen Hunt, Mad About You
1997: Helen Hunt, Mad About You
1996: Helen Hunt, Mad About You
DRAMA, ACTOR
2004: James Spader, The Practice
2003: James Gandolfini, The Sopranos
2002: Michael Chiklis, The Shield
2001: James Gandolfini, The Sopranos
2000: James Gandolfini, The Sopranos
DRAMA SERIES
2004: The Sopranos
2003: The West Wing
2002: The West Wing
2001: The West Wing
2000: The West Wing
its as if the emmy voters are unaware that there are other shows besides the West Wing and the Sopranos.
It also seems that the main requirement in the acting categories is that you play and lawyer, a doctor, a cop, or a mob goon. Any kind of stray from the normal shows that center around the law or a hospital and you are automatically out of the running. I love Lost, Arrested Development, Scrubs, Alias, SVU, and Entourage but i will not be watching the emmys as why bother when all you have to do is look at who won in the past and you can tell who will win.

Thats a really informational list Hoban. Thanks for that. I never realized how huge Helen Hunt really was. She had oscars, emmys, a hit show, a blockbuster movie....where IS she?
And I didn't even know Patricia Heaton got those back to back Emmys. But yes, The West Wing is way too over rated and way too over praised. The sopranos is certain to sweep each time it comes back, but it is a quality show and deserves the praise. But the emmys should be excited when the Sopranos isnt there.

I think those two years that Patricia Heaton won, someone else should've gotten it. She's just smart in submitting good, HOUR-LONG tapes. 2000-2001 was the peak of Malcolm in the Middle and jane Kaczmarek (who should've won already) and the emergence of Sarah Jessica Parker.
And the last two years that Helen Hunt won? Dear God, that was when Ally McBeal and Calista Flockhart were actually funny!

So Calista Flockhart never won? That's weird. I actually thought Ally McBeal was a pretty awesome show (in its heyday).
And although I don't watch Malcolm in the Middle anymore (does anyone?), Jane Kaczmarek should have at least won ONE. She was awesome, as well.

True, Calista Flockhart never won. She got steamrolled by Helen Hunt. And I think when Lucy Liu was nominated for her supporting work in Ally McBeal, Kristen Johnston from Third Rock from the Sun won. Huh??? lol Thankfully, Ally McBeal deservedly won Best Comedy in it's second season.
I saw the episode that Jane Kaczmarek submitted for this year. Pretty good. According to goldderby.com, anyone of the 5 nominees could win apparently.

Lucy Liu was frikkin' hilarious in Ally McBeal. I didn't even know she got nominated (I'm not so much in the loop from years past, it appears).
Kristen Johnston was also good, though. 3rd Rock always made me laugh.

Show tomorrow. Any last minute predictions? Preferences?
I think I may switch my 'will win' to a draw between James Spader and Hugh Laurie.
But I still think Jason Bateman's going to pull of the win for comedy...

Mariska Hartigay is now my favourite for best actress.
Does she deserve it? Hell No.
But she and Close are the tango competition for it.
Which means, of course, Garner will not win for a FOURTH year of nominations in a row.

I'm just happy Alison Janney won't have a chance to win, without a nomination.

I think Patricia Arquette is the least likely out of any nominee this year to win on the pure basis that shes easily the weakest link in her category.
