I know we most of us think the show should only run a couple years or so but you know how Hollywood is, it will go on for ages.
So with that in mind I think they should pave the way now by periodically introducing us to some of the never-shown characters, the ones not in the favored dozen. Then if someone dies they can at least have the option of smoothly replacing the person by having a lesser character get more time.
That will also allow them to do more backstories and I know you all love those.

Actually the flashbacks are becoming more and more of an integral part of the show rather than just a great concept.
Mild Spilers....
the basic plan with the flashback as I understand and have heard is that the 14 main castaways or however many are left after whenever they decide to reveal all of this... are supposed to have all been connected to each other in some way before they got onto that plane. And the flashback as are going to slowly reveal that, or that's the impression I'm getting from recent articles and news I've heard. This week's show: We learn that Sawyer is connected to Jack's father somehow, so it's starting!

Boone and Sawyer were in the same police station in Australia when he was trying to report on his sister.

I wonder which of the castaways were driving the car that hit Michael. Hurley perhaps?

I don't remember if the driver actually stopped and was shown on screen.
If not, I would think it's highly likely one of the castaways ran over Michael.

This isn't a spoiler but more of a production note. Still, I'll write it in white.
The dog will have its own flashback episode. Apparently, something of note happened in the cargo bay of the plane.

Also as far as connections among them before the crash go, they never said who it was who died on the operating table when Jack's father botched the operation. Could it have been a relative of one of the main characters?

That is freakin HILLARIOUS. for the record I was the first one ( a few pages back in this thread) to mention something about the dog and how he's also an important player in the show!

I've thought he and the polar bear were one and same since day 1.

Nice episode, but nothing of great importance happened. The boar and Sawyer thing was pretty funny.
Is it just me or did anyone else see the Ethan corpse breathing?

Let's start with a game: I've never seen an episode of Lost as boring as this.
So 60 minutes to find out that Sawyer shot the wrong person and can't kill a boar. Time well spent. Oh and Charlie feels something about.... whatever, who cares (oh yeah, everybody but me) It was nice that Sawyer talked to Jack's father and an interesting ending to find that Sawyer put 2 and 2 together.
The island's full of mystery? There's a hatch in the middle of the jungle? Locke is a crazy mofo? What show is this? Because it sounds interesting and I would love to watch it.

I thought it was a very well done episode.
It was quite interesting and I loved the character development and unravelling.
However... I don't think it was such a great idea to introduce this episode (which was just about virtually an episode with no strings attached to any other plotlines) at this point in the season.
When there are many other characters without flashback, I don't think we needed another Sawyer one (though it was better than his first)... they could have done more.
Nontheless, well done episode.
Also, we were misled from the previews, thinking we were gonna have a love triangle episode. I'm thrilled they didn't resort to that.

I thought it was a good espisode but too predictable. Of course he shot the wrong guy, why did he take the word of a guy he knows is a con man and who ripped him off once before? Duh. And of course he wouldn't tell Jack what his father said, that would be too....well too informative and interesting. It was alright, I had fun but it was an episode in which every punch felt pulled.

I guess I'm not alone. I didn't care for this episode, reminded me too much of a stand alone ep. They need to move the overall story forward, french woman, hatch, monster, Ethan.
Why didn't anyone cut open Ethan to make sure he was human? He seemed awful strong and supernatural.

Because even though Robert Patrick, formerly of The X-Files, knows a thing or two about the supernatural, I don't think anyone there would think that Ethan is anything but human.

The way he strung up Charlie and fought Jack, he didn't strike me as human. But I do watch a lot of sci-fi. Maybe Ethan just worked out a lot.

If anyone has a tape of this episode, Ethan was breathing! Look at the shot where the camera is right beside Ethan and is pointed up torward Hurley and Charlie.

I was ready to say you're wrong. I checked it out on my dvr. HE'S CLEARLY BREATHING.
The shot in question has the ocean/sky in the foreground so you can plainly see his black shirt rise and fall with each breathe.
Either that's a screw up or good old Ethan ain't dead.
