It's so hard, very hard to compare this episode to the others in Season 1 because the show has come a logn way since then. Most of the episodes we consider the best thus far are nicely packaged ones, with a story, a point to make, and an ending. The fact that this opener is based so much on just continuing and event and not even resolving it leaves it in a tough situation to compare with the rest. But, that shouldn't take away from the genius of it all. They really did deliver... I haven't coem across one truly disgruntled fan yet.

I'm watching season 1 episodes on and off now from the dvd and to say that the show has changed dramatically over the course of one season is the biggest understatement! It's in a completely different dynamic. When the series first started off, they put the sci-fi stuff on the backburner and very, very slowly and slyly brought it in through the flashback at times. It may not have been intentional, but it was pure genius...

Actually, how genius? We'll find out this Thursday when the ratings for episode 2 come in... actually episode 3 or 4 will be more accurate. Here's why...

The show started off as an island-castaway drama and in 1 year has turn into a full blown sci-fi drama, and what could actually be the biggest cult hit in history. I mean... we know TV viewers have always been obsessed with these kinds of shows; figuring out what exactly it's all about; the endgame, where it's going...
But, has there ever been one that maintains 20 million viewers? This is soon becoming a cultural phenomenon.

If the show seriously starts getting sci-fi heavy, I give props to the the creators, writers, and producers for pulling this off! Amazing. So, once the big cliffhanger/twist is revealed, we'll see how many viewers are still interested in pursuing this cult drama (is it even considered a cult if it's mainstream?) and when we'll know if it has truly attracted the fascination of TV audiences around the nation and possibly the world (one of the only, if not the sole, drama on TV now not set in America).

Nontheless (referring mroe to my first comments) I think the premiere was among Lost's strongest episodes yet.

I love this show!!! It's ,without a doubt, the best show on television. And I can't wait to see in what direction the writers are going with Lost. I haven't been this hooked on a show since X-Files.

So much for the Genetic Mirror theory. Which sounded implausible enough to begin with. We are supposed to have twins running around somewhere...over 1 billion of the very same people on earth and no one notices? hehe

Logically speaking, things are starting to narrow down. It looks to me like either 1) There is something supernatural going on, regarding miracles and fate and all that 2) There is time travel going on, some how 3) and this is my favorite far-out-there theory even though it's probably only 5% likely....the memories of the survivors are not real. That would explain a lot actually. We keep focusing on whether they are really there, maybe they are ghosts etc, but what if the island part is very real, it's the memories that are false. I know it's whacky, and I don't fully believe it myself, but it's entertaining to consider.

The fact that the Aussie guy seemed to have some hand in healing that girl and now is in the hatch, that is really narrowing the possibilities down of what could be going on. It's not clear yet but they have now committed themselves to have to explain something that extreme.

Overall I thought it was a better than average episode. Very good acting, but really Jack, Matthew Fox, he should give it a rest with the crying. He cries like every other episode. OK we know you can cry on cue, that's cool, now stop it. My ideal episode would probably involve Sun and Sawyer more, but this was a good one. And Kate...she's so freaking gorgeous on this show and Jack looks at her like he's not interested. What is going on there?

Actually, I'd prefer if Jack had less flashbacks because unless there is something BIG to discover in there, they seem like the most pointless ones to me.

It's interesting howit took only one single episode to pretty much tell Hurley's entire backstory and already five of Jack's and we are by far not done.

Last season Hurley said he won 156m in the lottery. On this season premiere, he tells Jack that he won 114m in the lottery.

Hmm, really? I remember what he said last season (I rewatched that particular episode today with friends), but gotta view the Season 2 pilot again, I guess. I missed that part. I am not sure this "mistake" has some further meaning, though.

Ya, I think I remember Sawyer (on the raft) reading everyone's messages (in the bottle) and exclaiming, "Who the hell is Hugo and how did he get $156m!"

I guess they just made a mistake... or he could have won $114m but amassed a worht of more than that, because in Hurley's episode we find out he own Locke's box company and other stuff, so he could have added on to the winnings!

This show is usually so careful about numbers, which is why it stood out. It made me wonder if he won anything at all.

If he didn't why would he even write it on a piece of paper and put it in the bottle?

I'll have to watch the Hurley episode again just to make absolutely sure how much he won when he actually won it.

Otherwise, I'm thinking my argument makes the most sense... He did win as much as he told Jack, but when Sawyer read his message in a bottle and when he was talking to Charlie, the wording was "I'm worth $??? million dollars" so he could have amassed more wealth by investing his earnings in companies or stocks or whatever. Come to think of it, I remember his lawyer in the flashbacks saying his net worth is rising; this oculd be the explanation!

Always the buzz kill. ;)

Now see, I prefer voice of reason. But to each their own ;)

I mean...I guess I was a bit disappointed they didn't show any of the raft people, but I'm terribly intrigued about Desmond.

I agree that Desmond has possibilities, but I think his reveal was lessened by its predictability. As soon as he was introduced in the tour le stade I figured out that it was he in the hatch. Agree with you on the disappointment on the follow through with the raft, instead we get Shannon running around for Vincent and seeing Walt, which looks to be another mystery we'll wait for 10 or so episodes to be expounded on further. The plus side: I didn't hate Charlie...all that much, downside - I wanted Locke to kill Jack no fewer than 10 minutes into the show.

No kidding. It was SO easy to tell. They spent so much effort to NOT show us the guy's face at the beginning, that when this supposedly "random" flashback came around, you just knew it wasnt random at all.

New episode tonight.
Finally!! It felt like another 4 months!

We're going to find out what happened to those on the raft, but I also hope they really start explaining about Kate and Locke and Desmond. I hope they don't just briefly touch up on it and leave it for Episode 3/4.

Entertainment Weekly said Oct. 5th, Desmond will tell-all.... or something, lol.

Crap! Another week! How did I miss that btw. I read last week's EW cover to cover!

Anyway... this thread is already up to 6 pages after 1 episode, lol!
I wonder how much it will end up with a week after the finale!

Hehe. It's in the little boxed article right above the Sound Bites, next to the Ratings, I believe.

They couldn't have screwed up something as important as this, I think. I was a little confused when he told Jack he won 140 or something. Hurleys bad me thinks

He told Jack he won 114 million dollars, which was the truth. He told Charlie that he was worth 156 million dollars, which was due to his many investments that paid off big time (including the investment in a certain box company).

Then why does ABC say he won 156? In that link of mine above.

I don't mind waiting a week for more on Desmond and such. We missed anything on the raft people last week, so I hope lots of focus is on them. Although, I can't imagine how much they can do with them floating around in the middle of nowhere. I kind of hope it's light out on tonight's show. The whole episode taking place at nighttime was a bit weird.

The episode tonight is titled "Adrift", so I'm assuming it's focusing largely on the rafters.

No Jolene Blalock in the upcoming episode, it seems. According to what I read.

Considering tonight's episode will be Michael's and the next one Sawyer's we can assume that by the third episode Sawyer will either reach the island again or the episode will be split between the raft survivors and the island survivors.

Anyone hear who Cynthia Watros is on the show? Is she a survivor, or one of the "others"?
