he has had corruption charges around him for years, so it doesn't not surprise me. I don't think this effects Obama because he has pretty much shunned him the last couple of years.

I lived in Norristown for a year and everyone talked about Biondi and the local goverment that was corrupt. Silly Philly...

Well, I'm not that shocked by the events and actions of the governor.

stupid stupid Blagojevich. I'm just upset that it has to be Illinois. But only good came come of this, no? I mean, politicians in the whole state will be super extra careful now and stay away from corruption (or at least be smart about it).

Will be an interesting month ahead now here in ol' chitown.

Good for this DA. He's the same guy that went after Scooter Libby and other corrupt politicians. Maybe now the Republicans will stop saying he is politically motivated. Nahhhhh

This guy seems like a grade-A slime ball. Isn't he like the third Illinois governor to be taken down by corruption in the past 30 years? That's a lot. The last one was just two years ago!

He's been the governor since 2003.

You might be thinking of him as all three governors :)

George Ryan (who I referenced in the other thread) was the last one before Rod.

No, I know, but I think Ryan wasn't arrested/incarcerated until 2006. He was governor until 2003, I believe. That's two Illinois governors in prison in a row. From two different parties. That's insane.

UPDATE: Ryan was convicted in 2006. He started serving time in 2007.

I wonder what Obama originally paid for his seat?

(...and whether it was cash and/or future political favors?)

So a bit of Obama drama is brewing it seems.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/ ... spoke.html

Quote:
An Obama aide, speaking on the condition of anonymity, took back David Axelrod's remark last month that Barack Obama and Rod Blagojevich had spoken recently.

"What the president-elect said today is correct, David Axelrod misspoke," the aide said.

Obama said today the men had not spoken.

An open question: When they last spoke.

UPDATE: Axelrod says the same in a statement:

I was mistaken when I told an interviewer last month that the President-elect has spoken directly to Governor Blagojevich about the Senate vacancy. They did not then or at any time discuss the subject.

The statement doesn't answer a question that I've asked, so far fruitlessly, of the transition, which is when Obama and Blagojevich last spoke on any subject, and what about.

Doesn't help that people are calling Illinois the most corrupt state ever.

Axelrod may not have known and was just talking like an idiot.

Meanwhile, you have to balance that against this other information:

1. Sources have said that Rahm Emanuel was one of the people helping to expose Blag

2. At the democratic convention, Obama gave all the democratic governors a spot at the podium to give a speech except Blag

3. Blag is heard on tape calling Obama a motherfucker because Obama was refusing to see things his way as to how to choose a new Senator

I definitely know Blagojevich and Obama weren't on best terms. But it wouldn't surprise me if at the very least a phone call happened about the senate seat. I mean, he's President-Elect and Rod is the governor of his home state. It makes sense.

So it looks like Canidate 5, the one who looks the worst after Blagojevich, is Jesse Jackson, Jr.

Quote:
Chicago Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill., is the anonymous "Senate Candidate No. 5" whose emissaries Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich reportedly offered up to $1 million to name him to the U.S. Senate, federal law enforcement sources tell ABC News.

According to the FBI affidavit in the case, Blagojevich "stated he might be able to cut a deal with Senate Candidate 5 that provided ROD BLAGOJEVICH" with something "tangible up front."

You know, when I lived in Chicago the Trib ran a series of articles on the corruption around the candidates running for mayor of Philly in 2004. The articles were almost defensive about the fact that Chicago/Illinois was being usurped from its position as most corrupt government in the country.

I guess the city/state went and did something about it. :funny:

I can't even take this crap seriously. I do wonder who else's names are going to come up around this, though. Probably every one's. That would be pathetic, but not unlikely.

edit: Just saw Caius's post. Yeah, every single person who was interested in this seat probably took the bait and will be in trouble now.

Holy crap. If that's true about Jesse Jackson Jr. I actually liked the guy and thought he would be a good replacement. They need to clean house here in Cook County. Highest sales tax in the country and we still have budget deficits, horrible public transportation, and who knows what else.

I thought the transportation was actually good in Chicago!

The weird thing about this is, excepting Rod, most of the people that are going to be implicated were probably passionate politicians that cared for their communities/constituents. This just went to their heads, they got a bit power hungry, and they probably figured that they would be able to impliment more of the policies/ideas they beleive would help people from this higher position.

I'm taking bets on who you guys think is going to be the next key player named.

Blago will not resign as governor. Big surprise. I'd like to see Obama kick Blago's ass.

This is all Chicago stuff of course - nothing to do really with the rest of the state. It's nice to know I guess that the trash is being taken out and the state politics will be cleaned up considerably.

I'm sure that Chicago was more than just a filming location for The Dark Knight. Probably was the key model for the politics in the film too.

I was wandering the same thing. But ultimately, I weighed against that. I don't think she has the resources (she came into her position fairly recently and due to her experiences in Iraq. Not through a long process of political dealings and constituent recruitment). Plus, with both her and her husband's millitary backgrounds, I bet you they had some inkling that this entire process was going to be tapped from the get go and decided to play it safe.
