Post It's ironic that all the Fox movies piss off conservatives
Seriously, it seems like lately Twentieth Century Fox is always the company that releases these movies that manage to make Republicans incredibly angry and cause quite the controversy. This month alone, both Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Kingdom of Heaven made quite a number of conservatives pissed off saying that the movies had hidden liberal agendas. The same thing happened last year with there Memorial Day blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow. Every now and then they have these campaigns to try and shut down any movie whose moral is one they don't agree with (see WB's Million Dollar Baby, the Spongebob Squarepants TV show, The Village), and there's two things that this makes me wonder about. First off, why is it the company owned by the uber conservative Rupert Murdoch that keeps releasing these movies? Does he not have any control over this? Is it pissing off all his friends anyways? The second is, why is it that every three weeks a movie is released with people accusing it of only being made to try and brainwash viewers into thinking more liberally, but you never hear liberals yell the same thing. Are they just a lot less sensitive (I never heard anything about say Man on Fire, despite the fact that it's at least as "conservative" as any of the movies listed are "liberal")? Or could it be that a lot of the basic morals about right and wrong are naturally more liberal then conservative?

Lots of questions there.

1: Murdoch has faith in the dollar first and foremost. He will distribute KoH and Star Wars because they are big bucks. He will then take those big bucks and create massive conservative think tanks and foundations. So who gets the last laugh? He doubly wins regardless, and if someone wants to scream hissy fit about "If you're not with us, you're our enemy," than they also don't know World History. It may have been a direct reference to Bush, but its at least, if not more, a direct reference to Mussolini, Castro, Hitler, and pretty much and authoritative dictator. Now, if someone wants to freak out about that, they can go right ahead I guess, they're just dumb to not see it for a larger question rather than an immediate slap on the wrist. Even though it was that too. They don't like it? They don't need to buy the ticket. There are lots of movies I refuse to support financially, and I'll cricize them too, but I wouldn't say they should be banned.

People clamoring for FOX not to release movies just because they don't like the agenda is tantamount to adovcating censorship. Murdoch is much smarter than that. he'll show it, reep the financial rewards, and then use it to build a media empire that has slowly influenced the tastes and understandings of this country's world view. he's laughing his way to the bank over his righteoous and combatant supporters right now.

2: Lefties bitch too. Just in different ways and over different material. Often the measures they call for are different. But who knows, People are allowed to make demands of the film industry, that's capitalism at work. Film industry doesn't have to listen, clearly, Murdoch doesn't care about some anger over an anti-Bush message as he walks home with a 150 million domestic weekend. He'll make it up to Bush by funding the next uber-conservative corprate think-tank in DC.

MovieDude: your search for a moral absolute is both commendable and understandable, for such a young age.. I agree with you on the grouping of movies.. That studio does lead the way, although lead is a bit overstated.. I think the film industry, as most, gravitates to giving additional work of a similar value/tone to whoever did the last job.. Thus MNShalayman gets to develop 'new' conceits/story ideas in horror.. Partially because he made the 'last' film of the type and so why look for a second banana?
So once tagged as where slightly liberal films might get a favorable reception, a studio will get more by inertia.. and if they are making money, well you know the rest..
By the way, none of the movies mentioned are any bit true left of center.. They are all conservative... Move your center line.. You don't see much anarachy on TV these days......

Hollywood is inherintly democratic for the most part and the large majority.

Why would democrats complain about it considering all the $$$ they get?

I would say that ROTS has an anti-fascist agenda rather than an anti-conservative agenda. I thought some of the sentiments expressed on behalf of true freedom were quite stirring...

(It makes me think the conservatives must be feeling guilty, if they think the movie's philosophy was levelled against them - I'm surprised they didn't interpret it as being against the freedom-hating terrorists as usual.)

It makes more sense when you realize that Fox News is just well marketed entertainment, and not serious news.
