Whatever happened to The Karate Kid 2?!
From the last 5 years this probably stands as one of the most surprising cases of "what, they didn't make a sequel?".
Whether you like the film or not, is besides the point. It was arguably one of the biggest surprise hits of 2010, opening to $55.7 million. It made nearly $360 million worldwide on a $40 million budget.
How the hell did Sony not fast-track a sequel? At this point, it seems way too late.

Probably thought After Earth was going to really make Jaden a star. Going from action to a sci fi movie just like Will did. After Earth is no ID4.
I'd actually be interested in seeing a sequel though. Though Jackie Chan needs to be in it for sure.

Re: Whatever happened to The Karate Kid 2?!
I'm kinda glad it didn't work out. The Karate Kid reboot/remake was fantastic, and I'd hate for a sub-par sequel to drag it down.
I also think Jaden Smith has become more annoying the older he's gotten.

I think Jaden Smith is too old for a sequel now. The earliest it'd arrive is Christmas 2015 and that is already 5 1/2 years after the first, which is waaayy too late. Should have been out in 2012.

Yep, After Earth slowed down Jayden Smith's career. They were probably assuming he would be a big star by now and be able to make the sequel much bigger. Basically, what O said.

I bet Sony are glad they didn't make one considering the flop of Jaden Smith's star.

Re: Whatever happened to The Karate Kid 2?!
Yeah I don't know why they didn't do it. They weren't going to make it after After Earth, thinking he would be a bigger star, that's stupid thinking. If they were going to do it, they would've done it.
Also, the remake is decent. But the original is 10x better.

Re: Whatever happened to The Karate Kid 2?!
We'll, Jaden's Karate Kid was already a sort of remake of parts 1 and 2, so a new one would either be an original plot or from part 3, and no one was looking forward to that one.

^ But since when is that a reason not to do a sequel to a HUGE breakout hit with good WoM?

Karate Kid 2 was also better than the remake.

Re: Whatever happened to The Karate Kid 2?!
Let me rephrase. Chances of Karate Kid 2 happening would be a lot greater if After Earth was the big hit the studio expected, hence getting Jayden Smith a lot more exposure. I would imagine it getting fast tracked last year.

Re: Whatever happened to The Karate Kid 2?!
I don't think so. Thing is - even last year would have been too late. There was no reason whatsoever not to fast-track it in 2011 for a 2012 release.

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=116896Well he'll be 16 if they start shooting sometime in the next year. Looks like they were holding out for more of a Karate Teen look now that they dealt with bullying and dealing with a new surrounding. This could go either way, could open big, or disappoint ala the third film. These kind of teenage overcoming obstacle films of the 80s are so rare nowadays it can still do well.

Internationally will do well. Domestically would not be surprised by 50% decrease.

Re: Whatever happened to The Karate Kid 2?!
It'll depend on the marketplace. The first greatly benefited from a soft frame. Also if they could amp up a Jackie Chan fight as well could certainly at least open 35+

What the hell? They should have atleast marketed it and given it a wide release. I don't think it will flop entirely if the budget is decent.

Re: Whatever happened to The Karate Kid 2?!
The first one was unexpectedly great, and I'm looking forward to seeing Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan reprise their roles in this sequel. Quote: The sequel to the 2010 film, finds DRE (Jaden Smith) and his mother returning to the States, so he can pursue a pre-med education at USC. Dre falls into an underground world of fighting that threatens to derail his education and relationship with fellow classmate, Michelle. That is, until HAN (Jackie Chan) shows up to remind Dre where he comes from and how to get back on the right path.

So it's either incorrect or Sony is treating TKK like freaking Cloverfield for some reason. Either way weird.
