Re: Top three Russell Crowe movies
I love Crowe, but I would not compare his career to DiCaprio's in terms of care/taste. The Nice Guys seems to me a welcome course correction after a few years in the wilderness with such films as The Man with the Iron Fists and Winter's Tale. Or even Broken City, which I consider an undervalued and entertaining crime drama, but which is widely regarded as a minor Wahlberg tough-dude movie among minor Wahlberg tough-dude movies. Even though I am not fond of either, I will forgive him Man of Steel and Noah. The latter in particular because of the director's prestige and the outside veneer of, "What an ambitious, dangerous, wild project by a renegade auteur." It just ended up being at once bizarre and dull.
And with its eight Oscar nominations and a 500-million-dollar worldwide haul, Les Misérables ended up being a hit movie for everyone...but Crowe, for whom it was almost a net loss after receiving so much intense criticism for his singing.

Re: Top three Russell Crowe movies
That's pretty true, but I think their differences can probably mostly be summed up as: DiCaprio is choosing his directors, where Crowe is being chosen by directors.

Re: Top three Russell Crowe movies
What? You think Crowe is just some schmuck that should feel lucky to be chosen by directors? I think you're totally wrong about that. Crowe chooses his projects just the same as DiCaprio chooses his. Perhaps, PERHAPS, DiCaprio is getting better projects, but they are both choosing for themselves.

Re: Top three Russell Crowe movies
Well, not exactly like that. But I think it's more like Crowe is getting scripts to choose from Directors interested in working with him, while it's Dicaprio who's saying I want to do this film or work with this director and get paid this much and the studio caves for it.

Gladiator is overrated, sure. But it is still a very good film. Probably Ridley Scott's best. He lucked out when he made that.

Re: Top three Russell Crowe movies
Alien is shit. Blade Runner is so overrated. Thelma & Louise is decent, but it's not as awesome as Gladiator. You're saying "LOL" as though I've just said Battlefield Earth is a masterpiece. Gladiator is a great film. It won Best Picture.

Re: Top three Russell Crowe movies
Fine. That's your personal ranking but you weren't talking just about your favorite movies of his in that quote. To deny the fact all those movies of his you put after Gladiator had a way bigger importance and impact on the industry and movie art in general and claim G. was his peak - it's just wrong and laughable. Hey I find 2001 to be a boring overrated mess. But I do realize why it's important both in Kubrick's filmography and in movie history.
*Let's not use "It won BP" argument as I'm sure we can agree it means little. Academy rarely gets it right.

Re: Top three Russell Crowe movies
Gladiator is simply the best film ever for me. I just can't imagine it ever being topped. It was for one an awesome experience to watch it all together the first time I saw it, but it was especially the feeling afterwards. Once I got out of the cinema, I was hardly ever more impressed by anything in my life, maybe not in the way of an art form, but just in how the story created a deeply emotional impact for me with Maximus's course.
