Halfway through the movie, Jamie Foxx says something to Cruise along the lines of "I'm just collateral." Meaning his life is an item of value being held in reserve to assure completion of a deal, which more or less is what collateral is. It also has a double meaning with all the collateral damage caused from the bystanders getting killed.

\:D/ Thankyou Archie, now it makes sense.... although i dont think its anythuing to do with Collateral Damage, because that is a term used in acts of terrorism. But the first theory sounds correct, cheers dude

The orignal title of the film was Mr. Collateral, becaus Vincent's full name was Vincent Collateral...but the same does also mean what Archie said also.

Archie's point is right. And collateral damage does also apply to the film. It doesn't only apply to acts of terror (like the Arnold film) but anytime inoccent people get involved in violence, such as Jamie's character.
Either way, it's a great title.

Regarding the greatness of this film, I think it got absolutely jobbed this awards season. Cruise should have gotten best actor nods, Mann should have gotten best director nods, and Dion Beebie and Paul Cameron should have gotten Cinematography nods.

COLLATERAL is a good movie, but Michael Mann's weakest when it comes to crime dramas and does not beat HEAT in any way.... HEAT had the BEST Gun fight in Cinematic History probably with one hell of a Cast and the BEST Cast to.. =D>

Collateral was excellent. Jamie Foxx is one of the best actors in the business. He should have gotten nominations for Lead in Ray and Supporting in Collateral. Win two acting awards in one night. Wouldn't that be something?

Oh please...... LMFAO!
His name, thankfully, is Vincent, if they chose to add "Collateral" on the end it would spoil it all.
@loyal...ok, i see. It applies to both, thats a great title.
