Post Hustle and Flow looking good, something about 8Mile
Look over at RT: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/hustle_and_flow/

Going 86% on early reviews. SOunds decent, but someone who didn't like it said it was trying to be 8Mile. Was 8MIle any good? For some reason the idea of the Real Slim Shady in a movie about himself was just too funny for me to palate, and I never bothered watching it. Brittney Murchy's gone downhill since CLueless too.

Anyways, I'm starting to think this is going to be one of the early dgood dramas. Jumping the line on the autumn line up, this should get alot of attention. The trailer looked pretty decent too. Though there was a pretty preachy voiceover throughout it. I'm hoping that voiceover is out of place, and makes sense in the movie. Should be interesting.

I'm not too keen about the trailier or tv spots for it. But I guess you can say it has a lot of appeal for teenagers, and the urban community. A lot of people underestimate this kind of films. Considering it only had a budget of $2,800,000 million, it will be a success very easily.

I'm actually interested in seeing this (considering 8 Mile is one of my favorite movies of all-time), but I'll wait until DVD.

It was excellent, in my opinion.

But, who knows? I could be biased because, you know, I'm the #1 Eminem fan.

It's definitely a well-made film, no question about it. It's from the director of L.A. Confidential if I'm not mistaken.

8 Mile actually was pretty good. Eminem's performance wasn't eye-opening or anything, but he was light years ahead of many musicians-turned-actors.

Wigger.

You've gotta see it, dolce, if only for the rap battle scene. Plus, Brittany Murphy's tolerable in this one.

It has DJ Qualls acting convincingly "street." This movie's gotta be special!

It currently has a 92% RT rating. Hopefully it's as good as 8 Miles, which I enjoyed a great deal.

Yes, Xia, but its been sitting at 92 for over a week with no new reviews added. Makes me wonder if they had one filtered pre-screening and then held off on any more early reviews. It looks good, but that's just from the trailer. Could be heavy handed and preachy, or too much of a copy of man-makes-good. I hope its a bit more insightful.

On the plus side, I hadn't heard of Terrence before this year and he seems like he could pull off this role quite well.

The IMDb score isn't very encouraging. It's only from a few hundred votes, but still pretty low comparing to 8 Miles. I probably will check it out anyway.

Is this opening wide?

If the reviews continue, this could be the suprise of the year. It's got the urban demographic (and that shouldn't be ignored - Diary of a Mad Black Woman and You Got Served were successful because of that demographic) and it could get the adult demographic (a la Seabiscuit, Crash, or Road to Perdition).

If it starts out modestly in 200 or so theatres, I'd expect around $50m. This is one situation where more theatres in its opening could hurt the movie, as it gives it less room to expand and decreases the confidence theatre owners have with it.

Yeah, y'know there really has been a lot of buzz in my community about this movie. They were giving out free miniposters for the movie at the Lloyd Center, and that sure got a lot of attention. I wouldn't be surprised if that was pretty common spread. Historically, a lot of small urban movies have done well in the middle of July. The Wood opened the same weekend (July 16, 1999) to 8.5 million on 1,100 screens on it's way to 25 million total. It's budget was 6 million, and it's marketing was 9. That was also by Paramont. New Line's Love and Basketball performed similarly, with 8/27 on 1,200 screens with a minimal budget. Though it opened in October, The Best Man opened to 9 million and finished with 34 million on 1,346 screens. With a 9 million budget and 10 million in marketing, you can start to see a trend. All these movies were actually very well done and underestimated by the studios until they opened. I'm expecting a similar performance from Hustle and Flow.
