12 Angry Men is a film I admire a great deal in theory, on a conceptual level, and certainly find interesting, but I have never loved it. I definitely prefer other Lumet films, such as Serpico and The Verdict.

Edgar Wright, Peter Jackson, Ridley Scott, Brad Bird, Kevin Smith, Francis Ford Coppola and Quentin Tarantino had three. John Landis, David Fincher, Robert Zemeckis and Mel Brooks had two. I think that's it.

40. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan Larry Charles 2006 an utterly shocking piece of satire. wow, man. 39. Apocalyspe Now Francis-Ford Coppola 1979 i saw the redux version, which contained some odd scenes, but the delicious surrealism made up for any problems. 38. Blue Velvet David Lynch 1986 baby does want to fuck. 37. Dog Day Afternoon Sidney Lumet 1975 given that all the lumet films i've seen have been posted on this list, it'd be a bit premature to call this his best. but what a performance by pacino, and it's touching and sympathetic too. 36. Vertigo Alfred Hitchcock 1958 i feel bad for putting hitchcock's most canonised film up top, but it's his least straightforward, most surreal and a slightly different work for a director who's probably marginally overrated.

I have agreed and disagreed with certain choices along the way in the interest of argument and conversation, but it is definitely a solid list.
"Safety" is an arbitrary barometer anyway, in my opinion.

35. 羅生門 - Rashōmon Akira Kurosawa 1950 not just the clever editing, but the way unique perspectives are used is amazing...quite pessimistic too. 34. Fanny och Alexander Ingmar Bergman 1982 there is something about observing the bourgeoisie that i find immensely enjoyable and interesting. 33. Forbrydelsens element - The Element of Crime Lars von Trier 1984 a dystopian, atmospheric and deeply psychological film, on subjective investigation methods and the melding of personalities that results. a truly wonderful colour palette gives rise to a bizzare and haunting experience and leaves one much to think about. 32. The Big Lebowski Ethan & Joel Coen 1998 the way that the coens just exude cool... 31. Trois Couleurs: Bleu - Three Colours: Blue Krzysztof Kieslowski 1993 the best of the trilogy. the silences are amazing.

30. The Bridge on the River Kwai David Lean 1957 i'm a sucker for philosophically anti-war movies. 29. Fargo Ethan & Joel Coen 1996 the epitome of the coen's perfect mix of comedy and morbidity. 28. Scener ur ett äktenskap - Scenes from a Marriage Ingmar Bergman 1973 about as good as two people talking for five hours ever could be. 27. All Quiet on the Western Front Lewis Milestone 1930 this doesn't feature any heart-pumping action or explosive beauty. it's just kids getting gunned down. 26. There Will Be Blood Paul Thomas Anderson 2007 i drink your milkshake etc.

25. Солярис - Solaris Andrei Tarkovsky 1972 that ending. oh god, that ending! 24. 4 luni, 3 saptamâni si 2 zile - 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days Cristian Mungiu 2007 and the dinner scene here. wow. 23. Viskningar och rop - Cries and Whispers Ingmar Bergman 1972 death and disconnection. bleakest bergman yet, which is saying something, though there are occasional moments of genuine tenderness. also genital mutilation 22. Der letzte Mann - The Last Laugh F. W. Murnau 1924 an absolute masterpiece of silent cinema. on the trials of old age, and attachment to a now unattainable past. the photography is something to behold, and there is one sequence in particular (drunken dreamland) that is astonishing. the ending seems to receive hate, but the viciously cynical counterpoint to an extremely sad story is wonderful in its brutality, and extremely courageous, especially for its time. perhaps a little overlong in places, notably in the ending, but otherwise brilliant. 21. Rosemary's Baby Roman Polanski 1968 la la la laaaaaa la, la la la la la la la la............ one of the greatest finales ever.

Heh! Inny Binny names some choices that would never come even close to my top 5000, but then also names three more matches that if I'm not mistaken, weren't listed before. At least the Solaris named is the least worst of the two.

I think Inny works for the AFI or the BFI, and has only ever seen movies from either organisations Top Films lists.

I believe you will highly enjoy/love Witness and Near Dark. Barry Lyndon, we'll see. I am certainly intrigued to see your response. As for the latest additions to In A Bin A's list, I love The Bridge on the River Kwai. David Lean is a god to me. It almost made my list. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is a neat choice. Such an arresting, disquieting film. I wonder if he has seen Kes.

I've seen Kes. It's one of my Mum's favourite movies. She always goes on about how sad it is when the kestrel gets killed. I thought it wasn't a great film, and personally I feel Loach is an overrated director by people that have heard of him. The social issues in his films are dated and thus do not interest me.
