I find The Birds uneven and flawed. Not among Hitch's best, in my opinion.

Glad to see Heat there, David. Master & Commander is also a good film.

The Birds is so shite.

Adam McKay

Image

fucking hilarious. that's all.

89. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Michel Gondry
2004

sci-fi has much greater potential for exploring human fragility and emotion than is taken advantage of. this film does it beautifully.

88. The Conversation
Francis Ford Coppola
1974

Image

there's something awesomely snobbish about putting a dude playing a sax at the end to represent his state. lol

87. Hot Fuzz
Edgar Wright
2007

Image

both a perfection of the three-act structure and the perfect lampooning of it.

or i could also just say this is also fucking hilarious.

86. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
F. W. Murnau
1927

Image

murnau is a master of entertainment, and this is one of his best.

Is there a trend of putting highbrow titles at the end of a list to be able to place 'The Rock' & Co. in the top 10 in good consciousness?

Coraline and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are strong inclusions. The latter is my second favorite Kaufman after Adaptation.

Nah that would require caring about what other people think of our favorite movies. Only snobs do that.

And !!!! Edgar Wright and Adam McKay.

Out of boredom, I was going through the British Film Institute/Sight & Sound poll to see which of my favorites, beyond ones obviously beloved by many such as Blade Runner or City Lights, were included, and I saw Frenzy received one vote. From Béla Tarr! ;)

Just me and ol' Béla down by the schoolyard.

Awesome to see Master & Commander.

My list is definately going to be the most recent one. I have like 3 or 4 movies from the 70's and the rest is full of 80's, 90's, 00's.

Besides Corpse and I, who are obviously huge fans of it, has anyone else here seen Velvet Goldmine?

I haven't finished my list, but my list will give you a run for most recent Riggs. Mine is also shaping up so far to be an interesting mix of favorite movies I watch over and over again but aren't necessarily great movies, vs. technically great movies IMHO, but movies that I don't watch often.

I am very glad to see Repulsion. Such a creepy, well-made movie. One of the scariest ever. I love the final shot.

Terrence Malick

the contrast between the brutality of the circumstance with the deadpan conversation and quietly intimate moments, perhaps in order to emphasise those very human qualities that are so mundane yet so essential.

74. Броненосец Потёмкин - Battleship Potemkin
Sergei Eisenstein
1925

not just the steps, but also the crescendo finale.

73. The Shining
Stanley Kubrick
1980

never has symmetry been so unsettling.

72. Medea
Lars von Trier
1988

lars. von. trier.

71. L'eclisse - Eclipse
Michelangelo Antonioni
1962

long silences with strong focus on side things - irrelevant characters and small objects. there is a sense of delight when freed from the constraints of romantic expression; anxiety when forced into it. perhaps a little dissonance between the lengthy stock market scenes and the other parts, so it's either very good or great depending on whether i focus my thoughts on that or on the brilliant, brilliant ending.
