Box, I can't wait to hear your thoughts.
I have a request. Please have a version of your review without spoilers. I don't want to be spoiled at all but would love to hear what others think of it.

You should make one brief review that brushes over everything ala AICN (just for spite).
Then another review that goes into any issues and spoiler areas.

It's not a monumental failure, but it has one of the worst endings I've ever seen.

I am. I was skeptical about a lot of various aspects, but not about the quality of the film.
Roid, I've been extremely harsh on a lot of films, so I don't know if my opinion is that of the average filmgoer.
However, the screening I attended was a preview, and two men were standing outside asking people about their opinions. One of them went to the other and asked what the verdict was. He said it was so-so, but that he got quite a few negative ones.
Only one person (yes, one) applauded in the end. Most immediately started discussing the film, and let me tell you, they were not smiling. It might be because the film raises more questions than it answers. Actually, some of the answers given make no sense.
Anyways, let me just try to come up with something of a review.

Me to considering most reviews I've read including CHUD and Harry Knowles say it's Spielberg's finest work in a long time and compare it to his film DUEL.. I guess AICN is down for the moment, but here is CHUD'S Review of it:
http://chud.com/reviews/3507
After reading this, I can't wait til Wednesday, but I think I'll wait til Friday to see it.. They say it's definitely true to the novel, ending and all..

The film is a monumental effort, and its ending (as well as some things throughout the film), render it a failure.
The monumental failure was somewhat of a play on words.
The film is so close to being great, and just falls flat at the end, which makes it even worse. You know that there are professionals behind this film- some of the stuff is amazing- but man, they rushed it. Else, I can't understand how Spielberg could give us a film like this.

Some of the answers make no sense?? :???: Have you read the H.G Wells novel?? If so, it makes sense.. Reads the book and see it again and perhaps your opinion will change of it.. I can't believe that an ending would ruin an entire movie after the other 98% of it kicked ass.. This sounds like the movie HIGH TENSION where supposedly the movie is great, but the ending sucks which in tuirn could cause someone to hate the movie based on the ending..

You're closer to the truth than you would want to be.

The ending is not the only thing wrong. And 98% did not kick ass.
But you have to understand that for afilm like this, the end is anticipated sincethe beginning. Much in the film depends on the ending.
