Re: Soviet Cinema rules! I think what the real problem is with many Soviet/Russian movies (especially with comedies) is that their humor simply wouldn't translate to any other audiences, other than the Russian ones. You can't subtitle the stuff they are saying without losing a lot along the way.

Russian humor is always based on cultural, social and/or political background of our 1500+ year history. You can't get the humor without knowing what is the actual cultural base for it. It's hard to get it if you don't know much about Russia. You can't laugh at something if you don't know what's funny about it. I think the real problem is a huge lack of cultural awareness in today's world. In Russia people watch all kinds of movies from most of major film-making countries: USA, Britain, Australia, France, India, China, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina. And how many people in these countries watch Russian/Soviet movies? Very few probably (other than China, where Soviet movies were quite popular from what I've heard). It's not just the culture, though. It's also the language. Have you seen Peculiarities of the National Hunt, Peculiarities of the National Fishing or Shirli-Myrli? Only Shirli-Myrli. Re: Soviet Cinema rules! I thought Nu Pogodi was a feature length movie.  When I was a kid my father bought me a tape with Nu pogodi. I watched it over and over again. It was brilliant. I'm now watching Nu pogodi on youtube. It's just as good as I remember this was the first part I had on my tape. I still remember the music. Thank you for reminding me of this gem  I was never a big fan of Tom & Jerry / Looney Tunes. There were better cartoons on Cartoon Network then. Also my favorite cartoon ever would probably be Čarobna šuma ( The Magical Forest) and its sequel Čarobnjakov šešir ( The Wizard's Hat). But that's not in question... While I cannot comment on the name of the topic that Soviet Cinema rules as I haven't had much touch with Soviet Cinema, Soviet animated work are brilliant though and they definitely rule. Almost a decade ago there was a weekly show that showcased Russian (Soviet) animation. Each of the short cartoons was made in different way and each one was beautiful whether it was hand drawn, stop motion, in watercolors etc... The stories were great but unfortunately I don't remember the name of the show or the cartoons. I just remember a few details from a few stories. But there is one more cartoon that should be mentioned and that's Konjić grbonjić as I know it or in the original Konyok-gorbunok. It's a beautiful cartoon.
