Yeh I dunno,

The horror scenes wern't scarry at all. The last movie that had scares where i really jumped was The Village.

For good or bad the Village did offer about 2 good moments lost in a plot gone awry.

Well, I can't say im surprised to see the mixed (at best) reactions here. Honestly, I wasn't sure if this was a good film to kick off the festival, because it's really not easily accessible. The complaints about the film's lack of a coherent and cohesive plot are all valid, but Italian horror (Argento espically) has always been more about the images and the mood of the film rather than the story. As for it not being scary, I gotta disagree there, too. Although it's not necessarily the scariest thing ever put to film, it is the most nerve wracking horror film i've ever seen. Everything from Goblin's pounding score, Argento's bold use of primary colors that kind of puts the film in a place between reality and un-reality, and Argento's camerawork come together to just fry your nerves to an end. I absolutely love this film. My favorite thing about it is how it's constantly in some odd limbo between fairy tale and horror film. Did you know that Argento told his cinematographer on the film to watch Disney cartoons to get an idea for what kind of look he was going for? I find that very interesting because it truly shows in the final product. It's like an extremely dark and grim fairy tale mixed with a moving psychedelic painting. I stand by my claim that there is truly no other film like it. You don't watch this film for it's plot or character development or acting. This is a strictly audio/visual assualt. Everything from the sets, props, music, inventive use of color/lighting, creative camerawork, and extremely vicious murders more than make up for what might be lacking in other departments.
