Death Note, Death Note 2 is okay, but the original is the best.

But I suppose it is more a thriller than an action, sci-fi or an adventure film.

Gozu is certainly a very adventurous movie.
Versus is a good action/Matrix rip-off.

I'll second this, but not the sequel, which was dreadful.

I liked the sequel. Not as smart and ambitious as the original, but certainly more entertaining.

Battle Royale is awesome. It's the Animal Farm for Japanese education.

Have you seen Sky Captain? Casshern is animated using the similar technology. The movie might feel somewhat awkward, as its plot progression feels very Japanese. I suggest you watch it though, you won't be disappointed. If only it's available in 3D, it'd kick Beowulf out of the water.

Battle Royal is great.
I'm pretty sure Suicide Club is Japanese, but I would check it out anyway

Also check out the trailer for Machine Girl, if your like me, you will need some tissues after seeing this.
