Alright here it goes. Pretty soon I'll start up with some reviews of good canadian movies (including a summary of The Barbarian Invasions, the oscar winning movie :wink:) and especially two of my favorite canadian movies Duct Tape Forever and Men with Brooms. But I do have a lot of homework right now so I can't exactly get into huge details.

I LOVED Barbarian Invasions! Much better IMO than the character development of Big Fish (which came out at the same time). I know its a bit like ocmparing apples and oranges, but I though Invasions was a much stronger movie that resonated with me in a more comprehensive way.

Is Atom Egoyan Canadian? I know he did Sweet Hereafter and Exotica in French/Canadian. The former is one of the most interesting films I have seen in the past few years, the latter I couldn't sit through. Have you seen any of his films Rusty or X?

Anyways, Rusty, for the festival, I suggest the movie you watch you haven;t already seen should be Sweet Hereafter. Its about a school bus crash in a small Canadian town and some investigators that come in and try to figure out what happened. All the children except a few have died. But its not a drama/trajedy, its kind of Fargo'esque in everyone's odd ambivalency towards the accident. There responses are just very understated and have a suspcious feel...even though its not a crime, it is an accident. VERY interesting movie. Check it out hopefully and discuss once the festival kicks in. Myself, the new movie I'm going to watch over in the Italian thread is Riso Amaro (Bitter Rice) for sure.

Torri, you should check them out sometime. Canadian Cinema is very interesting because it is neither big budget Hollywood, nor is it a reactionary "arts house" flick responding to Hollywood. Candian cinema productions get funding and are not that poorly off, but nor are they wealthy enough to waste hundreds of millions on special fx. Because of this the entire genre seems to have pushed towards good scripts, interesting stories, but secure cinematography and direction. Its not a shaky hand camera indie. Anyhow, its very interesting and I'd love if anyone know more about Canadian Cinema as an industry there.

X, if you haven't seen it, check out Sweet Hereafter also. You two hosts can have a Siskel and Ebert-esque type commentary on the film sometime during the festival. lol.

I'm doing Italian, I told ya! Though, if I have time next weekend (or in the weeks after), I'll be sure to rent some of the films people have discussed and liked, rent some canadian films, and some italian horror ones.

Also, X, Rusty...I think Triplettes of Belleville is considered Canadian! Chomet moved to Canada in the mid-90's where he developed the short which later "Old Lady," which was later fleshed out as a character for Les Triplettes. The funding was from Canada, France, and Belgium, and I also think all of the art and production was in Canada. Add that to the list if you haven't seen it yet.

Canadian films get some flack from the Canucks, for not being of the same quality as our neighboring country, but fear not! There are some high-quality Canadian made films out there, that myself and Rusty will tackle during the festival.

Whats the Canadian Award Ceremony called again?? I forget.

Phew, the last time I've seen it was like 4-5 years ago...really depressing, though...

Let's see, there are lots of movies I know of that are Canadian, and I hope to view in the coming days, to discuss. Red Green's Duct Tape Forever is based upon the Canadian series Red Green. While I have yet to view the movie, I loved the series for a long time, got out of it, and now I find myself watching it a lot more. Not the most sophisticated film, but a damn entertaining one, I hope.

I have heard so many wonderful things about The Barbarian Invasions, that it is impossible not to view it for this festival. I'm sure Rusty will agree that we have to watch it, since it is an an Oscar-winning film.

I have yet to see Men With Brooms, but I'm sure it's a good movie. Rusty, can you recommend that I see this Paul Gross comedy?

That's the only Canadian movies off the top of my head. I'll be checking out some more, and I hope to be able to say at the end of next week that I have seen more movies from my own country, since I haven't seen that many so far.
