I'm not expecting the Woman King to be a player, but even if it was, the real life people being slavers might catch up to it

Well, the season cannot not have a black movie in the mix. I suppose it has to be I Wanna Dance with Somebody then.

We may have a frontrunner now. The Fabelmans wins TIFF's audience award. Was Spielberg's first time at TIFF. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movie ... 235223022/

Re: 2023 Contenders
Spielberg has lost in Best Picture so many times in a row that like Streep in Iron Lady eventually they will give him another

Re: 2023 Contenders
The Fabelman's is based on his own life and supposed to be his most personal work of his career so if there's going to be any movie that does it this could be it.

Re: 2023 Contenders
I think those are damn good picks. I don't see Women Talking winning Best Picture, but then I lack the foresight without seeing a trailer, critical reception, how it's perceived among the press, etc. Your analysis makes sense, though.

Is the Banshees of Inisherin too white to win best picture? Searchlight is great at campaigning

Re: 2023 Contenders
Probably will lose in the end but Banshees and Farrell could both peak in critics awards and make people overreact that they're the frontrunner for a little bit.

Re: 2023 Contenders
Yeah, as much as I would like it to do well, I feel it will peter out. This is very early obviously, and I haven't seen the film, but the only way I see it entering the Oscars is if it gets a Best Original Screenplay nod. I feel it might be too quirky for awards, but it will get a ton of critical praise, so its time to clean up will be at the critics awards, where if it does well it might domino into the more glitzy industry events.
I'd be so happy to be wrong about all of this, though, and for it to clean up with Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Original Score wins at the Oscars.

That will probably do well at the KJ Awards though.

Re: 2023 Contenders
With pretty much everything being screened, I think it will go a little something like this:
Banshees Bardo Elvis Everything Everywhere Fablemens She Said Tar Till Top Gun Women Talking
should get in but snubbed because of genre - Turning Red, Weird and Barbarian.
Its a pretty generic list. Hopefully EE or Top Gun wins. We already have enough filmmakers doing movies about their childhood.

I predicted Women Talking before but now I wonder if She Said is actually the sleeper to go all the way.

Re: 2023 Contenders
They pretty much have to nominate She Said no matter what right? Otherwise, some might interpret it as the oscars not taking the Harvey Weinstein situation seriously (which they didn't, but movies are great for revisionist history.)
Still sticking to what I've said all along though - Everything Everywhere All At Once appeals to all voters. It's an immigrant in America with a gay daughter and broken marriage trying to make her film through a populist action film. Any other name they call out will be met with disappointment from audiences around the world. The only well reviewed oscar ceremony of the past several years was when Parasite won ... because everybody was happy with the choice.

I knew as soon as I saw it that if it didn’t win Best Picture, I would at least have a great excuse to finally ditch the remaining fucks I have to give about the Oscars.

Yeah, at this point if EEAAO doesn't dominate in at least nominations that'd be a joke.

Re: 2023 Contenders
Emancipation is getting a fair bit of buzz despite Smith's involvement. If Smith hadn't slapped Chris he probably had a serious shot of pulling a Tracy/Hanks consecutive year Oscar.
Fabelman's is also losing momentum fast. Not really connecting with audiences box office wise. Dark horse opening for TGM with Everything building up momentum.

Re: 2023 Contenders
That Spielberg movie looks like such a boomer'd self indulgent snoozefest just like Hugo which they inexplicably gave like 20 nominations to. Nobody gives a crap about these "for the love of filmmaking" movies.

That's because Parasite was strikingly original and fresh and 10/10 AMAZING and Boon Joon Hoon or however you spell his name had a cult fanbase and had been making amazing films for a while. Is EEAAO that level of good?

Re: 2023 Contenders
EEAAO is overrated, but the Oscars aren't about only quality. It's mostly about virtue signaling now, so it's EEAAO's to lose.

Re: 2023 Contenders
After Fabelmans straight forward Oscar dramas like it are going to have to go straight to streaming just so their chances aren't risked by bad box office numbers. While it hasn't mattered that much for a while, I still think you want to put up a decent 30 or 40 million for a movie like this (eg. Spotlight - 45) instead of like 10.
