There will be some BIG upsets this year because there are tons more black voters, and the ONLY reason they are there is to vote up the black nominees. La La Land will not win so easily, or at all. Expect to see Fences, Moonlight, and Hidden Figures take big awards. In any normal year, sure, La La Land is sweeping.

Re: What are everyone's Oscar predictions?
La La Land's technical achievements are the best part of the movie. It will win direction, actress, cinematography, editing, screenplay, set design, score and song.
Hidden Figures will win Picture and adapted screenplay.
Denzel, Dev and Viola will win the other acting awards.

Denzel, Dev and Viola will win the other acting awards. Cinematography and editing were better in Arrival. Art and costume design were better in every other nominee. They just wore regular clothes in regular surroundings.

Re: What are everyone's Oscar predictions?
Didn't many older Academy members (i.e. members that would vote for La La Land just because it reminds them of the golden era of cinema) have their membership revoked? Partner that with the added black voters and I think there will be upsets.

Re: What are everyone's Oscar predictions?
I doubt they changed more than 5% members. The change like that needs to happen gradually over years. Not in 1 year. Maybe that was enough to shake up the nominations a bit and give more awareness to the problem. It won't matter much in the outcome.

Yeah they cleaned house with the people who didn't vote. The active voters still remain.

Re: What are everyone's Oscar predictions?
Here are my predictions.
BEST PICTURE - La La Land (will follow the trend of past awards, plus it has the celebrating film element that older voters like). BEST DIRECTOR - Damien Chazelle, La La Land (DGA will usually follows suit) BEST ACTRESS - Emma Stone, La La Land (SAG win almost seals this). BEST ACTOR - Denzel Washington, Fences (Won the SAG, plus Affleck being sued for sexual harassment will hurt him). BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Viola Davis, Fences (Should have won for the Help) BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - Mahershala Ali, Moonlight (A virtual sweep for him). BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY - Moonlight (It won the WGA) BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY - Manchester By The Sea (Lonergan is overdue) BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY - La La Land (The long shots are too amazing to pass up) BEST COSTUME DESIGN - La La Land (Jackie might take it, but there is too much love for this film). BEST FILM EDITING - La La Land (It won the ACE) BEST MAKEUP - Star Trek Beyond (Will voters even vote for Suicide Squad) BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN - La La Land (Again, too much love). BEST SCORE - La La Land (Ditto) BEST SONG - "City of Stars," La La Land (It's the best song of the bunch) BEST SOUND EDITING - Hacksaw Ridge (War film always win this category) BEST SOUND MIXING - La La Land (Musicals have the upper hand here) BEST VISUAL EFFECTS - The Jungle Book (There is not one scene where a visual effect does not appear) BEST ANIMATED - Zootopia (It's Crash with Animals. All kidding aside, it's the most adult of the bunch) BEST DOCUMENTARY - O.J.: Made in America (Who couldn't resist the 8-hour epic). FOREIGN LANGUAGE - Toni Erdmann (Sales Man could have taken it, but could the travel ban could hurt it. Plus, the academy tends to like the lighter fare) ANIMATED SHORT - Piper (Relatable story, no dialogue, check). DOCUMENTARY SHORT - Joe's Violin (Holocaust survivor, need I say more). LIVE ACTION SHORT - Ennemis Interieurs (My film teacher says it's the best one).

Re: What are everyone's Oscar predictions?
Lonergan is overdue? For what? Rocky and Bullwinkle? No way will that be part of the narrative if he wins. He's written, like, 7 films, three of which were Rocky and Bullwinkle, Analyze This, and Analyze That. It is hardly a Leo pre- The Revenant type of situation. And I am not sure the Academy is ready to award Denzel his third acting Oscar just yet. I get that Affleck has the sexual harrassment thing against him, but he got nominated, so they mustn't think it's such a big deal (and this was years ago!). Plus, Affleck has already won the Golden Globe and BAFTA for his performance. Many BAFTA voters also vote for the Oscars. I'd go for Affleck there.
