Re: No Black People
While I would have loved to see my boy Michael B get in, at least there wasn't an obvious snub like a guy who plays Martin Luther King. I doubt that will stop people from bitching though.

Re: No Black People
This was actually pretty bad. Smith, Jordan and Jackson all were ignored Best Actor options this year, no Elba, no Compton and for what it's worth another POC miss in Del Toro

They have their own awards, so don't come complaining.

I think the snub for Beasts is more of a statement from academy on Netflix and streaming than specific to Elba, i.e. to say they're not ready to become Emmy yet.

Re: No Black People
It really is pretty shameful. If only the Academy had nominated Michael B. Jordan instead of that awful Eddie Redmayne performance.

Re: No Black People
Nothing shameful about it. Get better roles, work with higher profile directors, take on a better script and if you do fulfill all those qualifiers then promote your performance every chance you get.
I would have liked to have seen Sam Jackson in best actor though but whatever.

This is the same excuse Silicon Valley VC firm gave when asked why there are no women hired: "we will not lower our standard", as if there is this objective quantifiable standard that somehow excludes an entire minority group from being qualified.

Re: No Black People
When a bunch of white people get nominated for Straight Outta Compton, you know there's a deeper issue at play.

Re: No Black People
You know what's really racist? Feeling obliged to nominate black people because they're black. If they want equality, they can't (and we can't too) use the race card when ever something doesn't go their way. This year (and last), there just wasn't a good enough black performer. I mean, is anyone really shouting from the rooftops about any black person's performance this year? Nope. When a black actor does great work (Jamie Foxx in 2004), they get rightfully praised.
There is definitely racism in the industry, but an awards show isn't the place to correct that. Nobody should expect the Academy to hand out nominations to black people to steer clear of controversy. There are perhaps not enough opportunities for black actors etc., but that's nothing that the Oscar nominations can fix.

This Didn't see the Danish Girl, but a B. Jordan nom would be totally righteous. And Creed is totally being undervalued in terms of Directing, Cinematography and Sound Design as well.

But fear not, non-white people! It doesn't matter who was nominated, 'cause after all, don't WE ALL DREAM IN GOLD!?! Amirite?

Re: No Black People
I've been thinking a lot about how the Board of Governors can fix this issue short-term (the industry wide lack of diversity is never going to be fixed, at least in our lifetime until there's a wild shift in overall population demographics) and it really comes down to the voters. So many are retired, not-active in the industry types. Those guys and gals need to go. Let them retain their ability to see free movies and the like but actually vote? Nope. If your last screen credit was in the 1960s, no, you don't get to tell us who the Best Actor of 2015 was.
Rules should be clear - Past winners and nominees aside, if you haven't received a credit in the last 36 months, you don't get a ballot. Past AMPAS presidents have done similar purges apparently, so instead of just celebrating in a press release that you added Kevin Hart and Chris Pine as Academy members, get rid of some other people. Hell, televise the purge. Trot out the old feeble members and ask them current movie trivia. If they look confused or give an incorrect answer, pull a lever and a trap door opens.
